He's a leadership researcher, organizational development consultant, spiritual formation practitioner. He's got a PhD in religions and a doctorate of ministry and the author of A God Shaped Mind. Sir, it is a pleasure to have you on church and state Well. It's a pleasure to be here, Caleb, thank you for having me. Absolutely, Yeah, A God Shaped Mind, I absolutely. I got to tell you I adore this idea because what I have found in Christianity is far too often we try to shape Him and capital h him around us, around our beliefs, around our desires, instead of transforming ourselves as the Bible and strikes us to be more like Him exactly. And this is all part of the way that we were designed. When we are born. We are born with something called a default mode network, and that is our survival instincts. And the whole thing has to do with the fact that as we grow through infanthood into childhood, we begin developing different aspects of our personality. And in doing that, if we build trust with our parents, we are much more likely to trust If we have dysfunctional situations in our life. Then there's a part of our brain called the magdalen that enlarges, and when that part of our brain enlarges, we are much more subject to fear and emotional responses. And that's not good because fear creates anxiety. Anxiety within us increases the heartbeat. As the heartbeat increases, adrenaline is released, and as adrenaline is released, our cognitive abilities literally decrease. In other words, if our heartbeat goes from sixty to seventy two, we have twenty percent less brain power. That's a scary thought. And yes, fight or flight is the instinct. But when an individual accepts Christ, the brain is flooded with oxytocin, dopamine, and serotonin, which brings the piece back and allows us to sort through things. And here's how intense it is, Caleb. One hundred to one thousand new synapses open up in the brain at the point of salvation. It's called structural plasticity. You've probably heard the word neuroplasticity. Sure, there's multi aspects of it. And that structural plasticity allows us to begin to dig into God's dimension rather than what we see here, touch, taste, and smell, so that we can now interpret things that we can't see. You know, when you were just talking about that, I immediately went to worship music and really the structure biblically of how we're supposed to worship God. I mean, we're told to meditate. When I'm looking at the more traditional mainline Protestants, and I'm not talking about the ones that have gone woke, ladies and gentlemen, those are the enemy, the legitimate Lutheran Presbyterian dar I even say Methodist. But there was structure behind it, and there were hymns and all of these. As I'm kind of thinking about it, would lower your heart rate, would have you resting in the Lord versus the more modern, non denominational, maybe even Pentecostal side of Christianity, where a lot of the worship music it's almost like a rock show, which is going to elevate your heart rate. And what you just said, that's decreasing your mental capacity. Yes, absolutely, the faster the heart beats, the less cognitive ability that you have. So when we use worship music, the emotions that are generated in it literally develop more peace. It takes our mirror neurons, and it begins to crystallize our intelligence level to a point now to where we can interpret things rather than respond to things. I think that's absolutely fascinating and obviously something that we should be striving for in our Christian walk. I've developed or devoted a lot of time on this show in discussing this topic and some issues that I'm seeing specifically within the American Church. And I'm trying not to beat up on one denomination specifically, but I shared with you, and I've shared with my audience before that I had a bit of a crisis at some church, hurt and ended up leaving the more non denominational side of things to go to a more orthodox For me, in this case, it was Lutheranism. Can you explain, I don't know, maybe add some insight to why there seems to be actually a rather large push in particular with males that are moving towards these more traditional denominations. Well, the key is, especially with gen Z, they are looking for authenticity. Authenticity is not common in our environment. We are marketed this, we are marketed that, we are told we should be doing this, We should be told we should be doing that, and we should buy this product or that product. The reality is is that we are to be content wherever we are, and the scripture directs us to that, and to always be wanting something reads more and more anxiety. And this is what happened during COVID Caleb. People became isolated. And when we become isolated, there is no interpersonal interaction. When there is no interpersonal interaction, people become lonely, and the magdala again begins to a large and crowd out what's called the prefrontal cortex or the thinking the part of our brain. And in that process what happens is the heartbeat goes up, the adrenaline comes in, and our cognitive abilities go down. So what we want is to understand that the path that God has ordered for us, wherever it is, should not allow us to begin to compare ourselves to other people. We can't compare ourselves. We're unique for such a time as this. And you know Jeremiah one five and Psalm one thirty nine, if God knitted us together in the womb, and he placed us in a unique set of time circumstances, families Educators, Ester four fourteen says it right for such a time as this. We were created for our sphere of influence, not somebody else's. You're pretty a good at what you do. I have a reasonable reasonable capacity because of my love of research and my love of God and trying to learn. But he created us for two different things, and he doesn't want us to compare each other. He wants us to find the peace that we have available to us because of our uniqueness, and that can only be done especially when we are in groups of people that not only will listen to us, but will hold us accountable. Did you know that there is scientific evidence based on blue zones research. I'm sure you're familiar with blue zones that when those disciple groups or those groups come together and intergenerational communication occurs for those gen zes, for those will linnials, they use something called mirror neurons to gather that information and it embeds it emotionally into our brains so that it now becomes our experience as well as the other person's experience. So we are literally growing by leaps and bounds by interacting with people who are honest, who are just, and who have their faith arranged in a place to where they could nurture us along the way. It certainly makes sense. You know, you're talking about peace and there seems to be a lack of peace nowadays. I mean, obviously we're in I mean, we've been an endless war since my gosh, since before I got out of the Marine Corps in two thousand and two. There's been this endless war cycle in the United States. But we also have, you know, twenty four hour news cycle, We've got social media. People are stuck on their phones all day long. As I'm thinking about what you're talking about here, do you think there's a direct correlation between the twenty four hour news the social media? And sometimes I'm looking at people around and I'm like, where's the common sense? It seems to have disappeared? Is it because of what we're doing? The dopamine hits and the elevated heart rates to where now people are using their brains less. And that's why I'm like, where's the sanity in society? Exactly? You know, the average middle school or spend seven to nine hours a day scrolling. They are not getting intergenerational input, they are not developing a purpose. They are being talked to black people that have an agenda, and you know, Caleb I'll be honest with you. Years ago, when a certain network started, they gave the news from a bit more conservative perspecse, but they're very biased. Now they're all so biased with an agenda that people don't know what to believe anymore, and they're losing their ability to put facts together. And there is more documentation about scripts being read, same words coming out of broadcasters' mouths at different times. They're reading the same scripts, and it's all based on someone giving them something to say when they should be listening to God. And this all started between the eighteen eighties and the nineteen twenties when education changed, When the Rothschilds, the Roosevelts, the Henry Fords said, take the critical thinking out of schools and teach them to memorize, take tests and then they can forget. They put us on an assembly line, and in doing that, it's removing our critical thinking skills. One of my roles is to use assessments in accelerating organizational development growth. And what I have studied since the early nineteen nineties is the fact that there is a mental skill set that has diminished twenty three percent since the early nineteen nineties. It's called avoidance, the ability to see the handwriting on the wall. It's the critical thinking skills. It has diminished so much with helicopter parents, with people giving direction in ways that suit their agenda. And this is probably why you've left a non denominational because they have an agenda just like the news networks do and they are not doing anything trying to create a cult. And God says he doesn't want cults. He wants believers that are committed to Him and willing to trust the scriptures and trust the Holy Spirit, and trust the circumstances that He brings into our lives and the people that do speak into our lives to guide our steps towards him. I got to tell you, I am absolutely loving this conversation, and literally my brain is firing, like I need to ask him this, and I need to ask him that. One of the things that as you were speaking, that came to my mind right off the bat is artificial intelligence. Now I see this as a net negative. In fact, there's a sticker I have on my laptop that it will tell you exactly how I feel about artificial intelligence. But I'm seeing more and more people that are using this that once again, if you go to social media and somebody will post something, and instead of taking the time to research it, to examine the statement and say I disagree with that or I do agree with that. Instead I'm seeing people go, hey, Gronk, is this true? No critical thinking skills whatsoever? What did you see for the future? If people rely more and more on AI. Well, they're going to continue to lose the critical thinking skills that are necessary for survival. And the more this happens. Now, let me give you a fact that might be a bit scary. Did you know that seventy five percent of the congregations feel the same way that you do about artificial intelligence? Seventy five percent of Christian congregations. Now let's go to the other side of it. Did you know that seventy five percent of the pastors prepare their sermons on artificial intelligence. I did see that recently and it broke my heart. Absolutely. Right now, the research can be very valuable. It saves a fair amount of time. You know, when you want to research Origin or Jerome or somebody from the first and second century, you can get the information fairly quickly, but you can't trust it. And let me give you an example. It took me two years to gather the research for the book that we're discussing. I cited two hundred and ninety three sources in my original book that I submitted to Simon and schusteron after going through it three four times, and there were seven rewrites to get this to a point to where the average person could understand. We were down to two hundred and twenty eight valid scientific studies. The studies were done, but there was a little bit of exaggeration and influence by the people sponsoring those studies for their benefit, not for the benefit of the audience. So you have to be very careful. Artificial intelligence can give you information, but the expression that ain't always right. Indeed, one of the other things as you were talking that hit my mind immediately was when you said the emphasis on scripture and the Holy Spirit. I mean, I think any Christian worth their weight knows that those are the two pillars of our Christianity, the Word of God and the Holy Spirit, the helper that Jesus Christ said would come to us as he ascended. I notice in certain circles that there is a massive emphasis on the prophetic, that there are these new prophets now It isn't lost on me that most of the time what they say is actually wrong. But is that part of that, is that part of the tickling the fancy, getting that more emotionalism using your brain lass, is that part of this Christianity that is problematic in today's America. Absolutely, it's second what Second Timothy says, they're going to say things to tickle the mind. Now here's the thing that we have to understand, and that is the fact that the word prophecy does not mean to predict the future. Naba. The Hebrew word for prophecy means to bubble forth, to give advice. It is cause and effect. If you look at verse John two twelve through fourteen, you see the four stages of spiritual maturity. If you read it in English, you'll only see three child, young men, and church father. But in the Greek there's a dependent child. That's where we build trust. Next is the pay Ideon stage, which Jesus said, let the pay ideons come to me. Why because they ask questions, they want to know, they want to grow. This is an elementary junior high school student that's scrolling instead of asking questions. And then you move to that Nianoskull stage, that young man stage where we've become independent and we actually put our faith to work. When we put our faith to work, things happen in our brain. The critical thinking skills open up, and that functional plasticity continues to grow throughout our lifetime. Our brains never stop learning. And you know, Caleb, so many people say I am who I am. I ain't going to change because there's no sense. I know what I need to know. And I'm here to tell you you don't know what you need to know, because there's always more that God will pour into you if you simply ask. You know, the crazy thing that I don't think many Christians understand is if you ask for wisdom, God will give it abundantly. That's a quote. That's not Chuck, that's the Scripture's quote. He will give it to us abundantly, and if we ask, we will receive. Does that make sense? It absolutely makes sense. And I know for myself I have asked for wisdom a number of times throughout my Christian walk. Continuing on with this line of discussion, is this why, because we are so spiritually stunted, why we see so many people that will engage in what Mike Winger has been discussing cover up culture. Why people have been attracted to colts even though they can full well see that this man is leading them down the path of destruction, and yet they just so you know, emotionally and spiritually intertwined with this person that they can't leave. Is that what's going on here? Yes? Absolutely, And you know why every one of us you Chuck, I'm a former marine also, brother. So we are taught that we are to perform conditionally, and there is nothing in the Bible that says you got to perform conditionally for God to love you. He's going to love us anyway. And that's what sanctification is all about. And that's let me give you an example. How many times did Jesus respond to a question with a question? Three hundred and seven times in the scripture? Why he knew? Answered, my gosh, he was God. You know, he wants us to think. He wants us to develop our critical thinking skills and explore and ask for God's divine wisdom. And here's what people don't understand. Jesus said this, the Kingdom of Heaven is near. Well, to be honest with you, Matthew was written in Hebrew, not in Greek, and the transliteration of that is not accurate. It means the Kingdom of Heaven is within our reach. In other words, we can reach into the Kingdom. As I mentioned, we live in a four dimensional world linked with depth and time. God lives in a ten dimensional world, and if we do not reach and grab those other dimensions, our brains are going to go stagnant. We'll sit in church and we'll listen and say, man, that was moving. Now, let's get in the car, going to stake, you know, and it's senseless. It's absolutely senseless. Why are you going if you're not going to act on what you're learning. And again the challenge is there's normally an agenda in many pulpits. I'm not saying all of them, because there are good godly men sharing the Gospel out there, but there are more people interested in either building their church or building their reputation, or selling books or selling a cult than there are telling the truth and the fact that I am flawed, I am imperfect, and you know what, God loves me anyway, And at eighty years old, I can tell you I've made enough mistakes for you and me both brother. And the thing is is that we do not have to perform. He loves us anyway. And what most people just don't understand is that the decisions that we make literally create the sanctification process that we have to live through. But guess what, God's ahead of us. He knows what we're going to do, and He's already planned. You want to do that, Okay, you go right ahead. I got this plan for you to help get you to the next level. And if you want to keep doing it, you can keep dealing with the same set of circumstances over and over. But once you recognize what I'm trying to tell you and you take that next step, Wow, more oxytocin, dopamine and serotonin hit the brain and your mind going to expect and again, and God say, oh boy. I love this message. This is probably one of my favorite sermons I've ever heard. And let me let me just say, simpify to you. I didn't know that you were a marine as well, so that's awesome. You know we're a special breed for sure. You mentioned that there were that we live in a four dimensional universe, but God is in ten. I'm sure my audience was like what are the other six? Can you? Can you let us know what those are? Well? I think because we live in a four dimensional world, he hasn't explained it to us all yet. But neuroscientist, I'm sorry, Hugh Ross wrote a book about the astral physicist approach to the dimensions of the world, and they can prove they existed. There's scientific proof that they exist, but they haven't put labels on them at this particular point because they're hard to define. We don't know what God knows, you know, the Bible says very plainly his ways are higher than our ways. But what I can tell you is some of it is omniscience, omnipresence, and being able to see things before they happen. Because the cool thing about God is he doesn't live in the dimension of time. He lives outside, so it doesn't matter what we see as time. He can see before and after. That's how he uses that sanctification process to refine us understood. We're coming up on a hard break and I want to dive into the nuts and bolts and really talk to the audience who might be experiencing this, this frustration, you know, this ebb and flow, this piety and despair kind of cycle that we go through as Christians. With that, let's go back to our guest, doctor Chuck Cocher, and I just I got to ask the question, you know, because I've lived this myself. I'm throwing myself into the bus here, ladies and gentlemen. I was in that cycle and oftentimes still find myself in the cycle of Yeah, it was a good message, but how am I applying it? I'm stuck in this like I don't know what I'm doing. I guess I'm going to church. I'm trying to live life right, but I still feel stuck. Sir, can you help us through that? Absolutely? I think there's some key factors and we see them lived out in the blue zones. Because faith, community, intergenerational community, the way we eat Daniel's diet works really well. Having a purpose in life and having that faith is going to bring us to a place where we need to be. But let's talk about being stuck. Most people are brought up to go to church on Sunday more as a social experience rather than a commitment to a lifestyle. Now, there's nothing wrong with going to church. The Bible says very plain, do not forsake the gathering together. But it doesn't say go to church. It says don't forsake the gathering together. And gathering together requires a level of intimacy, and intimacy puts you in a position of accountability, because there can be no accountability without intimacy. That's why Jesus said make disciples. Making disciples is and requires intimacy, and that intimacy is something that we will not grow. Why do you think Jesus confronted Peter and said get behind me, Satan, after he said you are the Christ, the son of the Living God, I mean, just minutes apart. The reason is is there has to be honesty and truth. And until there is that honesty and truth, an individual can't grow because guess what purpose cannot be defined. Jeremiah one five psal On one thirty nine. We were knitted together with a personality Ester four fourteen. We were created for such a time as this, with certain parents, with certain friends, with certain education, with certain social circles. Those were the foundation and basis for the spiritual gifts that God gave us. And you see, I run into people every day that have a belief that spiritual gifts are things we do. That's forty nine percent of the situation. Spiritual gifts are there to allow us to commune with God. And let me give you an example, Caleb, I want to tell you what a great host you are, and I want to tell you how you have an impact on people and change their lives. I just used my gift of encouragement for you. You know what, I didn't do that. God prompted me to do that, and He prompted me to encourage you because I was listening to you. Fifty one percent of the spiritual gifts are our development of communion with God. See, it's the early stages in our growth and development. And as we hear that voice and as we follow that voice with the a pathway that we were gifted in when we were created, and based on the environment we grew up in, we now are prone to listen to what's happening. And when we execute that spirit of encouragement or that spirit of hospitality or teaching or whatever God has given us, guess what We then develop the fruit of the spirit. You see, the spiritual gifts lead us down a path to spiritual maturity. And that's what the fruit of the spirit is. Now they are not administration thirty three administration tells you this works out of your personality type. And here's three biblical examples, and here's how to build that. So my assessments give you something to work with. And this is exactly what you were talking about. They give us information, but they don't tell us how to apply it. And when we walk this path and develop fruit of the spirit, we are actually learning how to apply it. That takes us to that young adult stage in spiritual maturity. And as we begin to apply it, something unique happens. And Jayl, I got to tell you, I didn't believe this the first time I saw it, but I was working with doctor Michael Hartsfield at Regent University. We ran thirty seven correlation studies. The fruit of the spirit is the exact same thing as emotional intelligence as defined by psychologists. In other words, when we exhibit the fruit of the spirit, God is drawing people to us. A person with a high level of emotional intelligence attracts people and when they do, it allows them to prosper spiritually. Now I'm not taking a rabbit trail. This is going someplace. Prosperity is something that people define as financial and the Bible has nothing to do with finances. Yes, people in the Bible achieved wealth. But there are four words, the first to tell us what prosperity is, and the other two words describe the state of prosperity. Take ha to achieve a goal or objective, whether it's a military goal like some of the kings of Israel and Judah did, but it can also mean getting you a job finished. But then's call means using the prudence that God gives us through his Holy Spirit. So the things that we do to prosper us are we achieve the objectives He sets before us, and we use prudence to get there. Now, then to achieve the state of prosperity, there is a word called told, and it means goodness. You live in a state of goodness to where other people are attracted to you and say call not shalom. I'm sorry, shalim, Not shalom. Shalom is an incident. Have peace right now. Shalim means living in a state of peace that is true biblical prosperity. So when you see that, we begin with spiritual gifts that breeds fruit of the spirit, that builds emotional intelligence, attracting people to us to exhibit the success and the goodness and the peace and contentment and fulfillment that God gives us through his spirit. We now have achieved what He laid out for us, all of which He's provided neurons in our brain to accept, so that even while we're asleep, he's working on our brain so that we can achieve the next day. And that's what preemptive prayer is all about. My wife and I pray it every night. Lord, give us what we need for tomorrow so that we may bring the kingdom closer to us. I got to tell you what you're talking about is absolutely beautiful, and that is the true church. That is how we should be operating. Unfortunately, we see in especially the monol An American Church, it's kind of been flipped on its head. If we're being honest. You know, there's such an emphasis on the spiritual gifts, and specifically within those spiritual gifts, the ones that almost make you like a superhero, the prophecy, the healing. You know, they want to do that. They don't care so much about the hospitality or the teaching. But it's not leading to where you're actually living with the fruit of the spirit, because it's puffing yourself up, it's taking you outside of Christ actually puffing yourselves up. And unfortunately that's far too many churches are operating just like that. And you know, the scary thing is that many people from the pulp but are disseminating predigested information so that they appear to be knowledgeable. But the Bible says very plainly, knowledge puffs up, but love. Endoors Amen so well said, let me transition here and let me talk about the youth here, because you know, for far too long, generations have always kind of get off my long mentality. They've looked at the generation coming up and going, oh, you're destroying the world. And I don't want to be part of that obviously, but I did struggle with the millennial types and unfortunately we do see that they're leaving the churches, they're deconstructing. But there is hope because the next generation after them, according to your research, they're actually moving into the church. That's right, at an eighteen percent higher rate. Now here's the scary thing is that it's the men in gen z that are making the commitments to God. The women are leaving still, and what does that do to our children that are being raised. They're not having the women speak into their lives and it it all goes back to the educational changes and the fact that we've told men you've got to be sensitive, you got to help with the dishes. And I'm not saying there's anything wrong with that. Trust me, I help my wife. We've raised nine children and I've earned every one of these gray hairs. So but the point is is that on Wednesday nights while those kids were growing up, I cooked. I give my wife a night off. There's nothing wrong with that. But to expect a man to be a woman is a whole different thing. God created us uniquely. Does he have both male and female aspects to his personality, Yes, absolutely, But He created men to be men and women to be women. And so what has happened is many of the millennials back, I've graduated from college, therefore I should be a manager. Well, no, you walk through that process, you earn your rank, and you know, coming through the military, I learned that real quickly. And what we have to understand is that one role is not better than the other. They're just different and they were created differently for purpose. There needs to be a nurturing aspect in a woman, and there needs to be a leadership aspect to the men. Why otherwise would they be called the patriarch of a family. So as we think about that, we have to dig into those roles and identify what is our part and what's not. And once we understand that, and God will tell us if we're asking. It's a matter of them assuming the place and the position that God put us. And when we do that, we honor Him not just with our lives, but with our hearts and with our motivations.
