He's a chemistry teacher who's been teaching on the Bible as well and really is from a background of science and mathematics. He has for thirty five years served as a professor of chemistry and chair of the Department of National Sciences and Mathematics at Louisiana Christians University. He's also the inventor on eighteen US patents and the author of two books or Air, Earth, Fire and Water, and is also going to be talking about his new book with us, which is Christmas by the Numbers. Doctor David Elliot, thank you for joining us on Church and State. Thank you for having me absolutely Now. It may seem kind of strange to hear we are summertime and we're going to be talking about Christmas, but you know, this is such an important relevant time for Christians, the birth of our Savior, and especially when we start dissecting the significance of some of the numbers here, right. I am a lifelong American who have celebrated Christmas and you know, Santa Claus and all the things that come with it. And a few years back, I'll say, if I were ten twelve years ago, I became ill say, tired of the Christmas season. It was exhausting, and I, you know, I sort of took it. You know, I'm a person who studies the Bible and spends devotion time with God every morning. And I pretty much cried out to him said, you know, I need something new. I mean, I'm Christmas is a drag and it shouldn't be. It shouldn't be. This is one of the you know, one of the best best news we can have. And I'm you know, dreading Christmas. And so I began to study and pray and think and like that. I'm a numbers person. I've trained in science. I've worked in industry. That's where I you know, I was privileged to invent and develop new technology and industry for about twenty years. And then I've been teaching about twenty in the college at the college level. And I began systematically studying and I did it only during the Christmas season. I was just like early November whenever things crank up for all the commercialization and this, you know, you know, all the things we do at Christmas, the shopping season, et cetera. I tried to, I'll say, go into you know, I retreated into scripture and began to study. And that's when, uh, you know, God helped me see and you know, I studied and prayed and and thought about this for years and began writing it down. And what has emerged was this this book. And so it is a Christmas book, but I think it's far more. I think it's uh, you know, it will bless people and will teach them about uh, you know, the importance of immanual coming to earth God with us. As I study Scripture, it seems to me, and I'm not a theologian, but seems to me the theme of the Bible, if we were to condense it to one sentence or to one phrase, it would be Heaven and Earth. It begins with God creating the heavens and the earth, and it begins already ends in revelation with a new heaven and a new Earth. And in between it's the message of how God loved us enough to come to earth, and he did it in the form of his son Jesus Emmanuel. God with us and the Law, the Prophets, and the New Testament have a very unified message. And again, as a numbers person, I begin I develop an interest in what numbers mean in the Bible. And I discovered that I'm not a Hebrew or Greek scholar. I look at it, and I asked my close friend, who is a seminary guy, and I, you know, I pay attention to it, but I don't, you know, I can't read the Greek New Testament. But the Bible is supremely numbered and ordered it is. It is at levels of order that I don't think I've discovered, and probably most of us haven't. And so it is numerically accurate as well. And I believe, you know that every number in the Bible, they should not be ignored, okay, And I don't know what they all mean, but there are trends that i've you know, begun to understand. And you know, there's a lot of other folks who've tried to write, who have written books about number meaning, and so they're very instructive. And so from this I studied the Christmas accounts, you know, and and discovered that they are also carefully numbered, and the number four keeps appearing, and you know, and there's a reason for that. Yeah, let me let. Me pause you there, and let's talk a little bit about that, because I was telling you off air, and I'll share this with the audience. But throughout my life, I have always seen the numbers four four four. I'll just be like doing some work and I'll glance up at the clock and it's four four four. Even when I served in the United States Marine Corps, my unit was third Battalion, fourth Marines, three four, and so there was three fours once again in that one. Is there any significance to I know, there's significance to three numbers in a row. What's the significance of four four four. Four four four don't I'm not sure. The number four, any time it appears in scripture, always refers to creation Earth. Okay. Interestingly, if you look at some of the New Age numerology, and I'm not an expert on numerology, and I did you know, I looked it up, four often refers to Earth in some of the other you know, the folks that worship numbers, and I do not. I think numbers are there to instruct us. The Bible is, you know, elevates God as as God. The numbers are there to help us for folks like me who like numbers and who are mathematically inclined, you know. And the beauty of numbers in the Bible is that you don't you really need to be able to count to ten and and that's most people can do that. And so and I've you know, the number four is is and begin Genesis one one in the beginning God and God. Number three always refers to God as the Trinity, father, son, holy ghosts. And so both numbers one and three are divine numbers. They appear in scripture. Uh, they refer to God. They're they're the realm of God. Uh. Genesis one one in the beginning God created Creation is the fourth revelation of Scripture. Okay, now, uh And and that's uh, you know, that's that's I think the basis of why four uh uh you know uh signifies uh creation or Earth. And by the way, I mean, let's just you know, I was a skeptic. I'm a scientist, so I always I always doubt everything. You got to prove it well. The fourth of the ten commandments is the one that mentions earth. You know, remember Sabbath, to keep it holy, because in six days God created earth earth. Okay, the Lord's prayer, the model prayer. In Matthew six, the fourth clause mentions earth, I will be done in earth as it is in heaven. And so this keeps occurring, and that's why I became. I moved from skeptic to I'm sold on the notion that numbers mean something. All right. Four is the number of creation, and so it's an appropriate number for Christmas because God came to earth, all right. And when they're a listing of four in scripture, and I talk about, you know, Matthew nine six, where Isaiah Gibbs emmanual four names and very appropriate because Emmanuel came to earth, and that is what Christmas signifies. And so I began studying the Christmas accounts, which you know are the familiar ones, and you know, you know, the angels, the shepherds, the wise men and all that, all those things, Mary and Joseph, and began to discover that there are groupings of four throughout. And that's what I wrote about. That's what I've studied, and I discovered further that as you study them, they began to teach us about the Savior. And that's what the word Jesus means, savior, and that's what Christmas is about. Emmanuel has come to save us from our sins. Sure that makes absolute sense. As you're as you're talking, I mean, yahweh, which is y w H messing this up? H w H. Yeah, there we go, which is which four letters as well? So we see that again. So I mean, I do see significance in in numbers in the Bible, and as you're walking us through this, obviously three has significance. Obviously six has significance as well. We see that as the number. Of man, number of man. And that's that's the one number that that that is defined what that means in Revelation thirteen eighteen, Uh Antichrist number sixty six six, which is the number of a man. And so man was created on the sixth day, Jesus underwent six trials, uh, you know, and and on and on. There there's many many instances of six, a listing of six. Uh. It refers to uh uh to man and and again the sixth of the commandments is you shall not murder. It deals with human life. I don't think it's I don't think the ten commandments we were listed randomly. I believe you know they're they're you know, uh, And in fact I know they're not because the first commandment is one, you shall have no other gods before me. And second number two always refers to a second will. That's that's us, that's our will, which always opposes God. That's the reality of another. As someone put it, there's a second will. And uh, you know the second commandment no graven images. The reality is there are other gods there. There there's alternatives, and they're forbidden. And then you know, the third is about taking the Lord's name in vain. So the first three capture the essence of God. The fourth is the Sabbath, the fifth is honor your father and mother. And the word given, give is always in the fifth element of something, because that is the number of grace, gift of God, something given. The fifth clause of the model prayer is give us this day our daily bread. And so the number five is the fifth mystery, the fifth revelation of scripture, that is, after man has sinned, redemption and the rest of the Bible is about God's redemptive plan, which by the way, is immanual. And so anyway, the numbers, you know, the meaning is fairly well established, and some of them, you know, there there's difference of opinion. Seven is is is probably the most common number in scripture. Seven. I'm still collecting all the instances of seven. But it is the number of the Holy Spirit, the Holy Spirit spirit action on earth. And I think it's actually the number four plus the number three, which is Earth and and God God, you know, God's carrying out his plan via the Spirit on Earth, you know, the seven spirits going out to all the earth and revelation. And there are seven repeatedly again and again. And it's now is this why? You know? For really throughout human history we've considered seven a lucky number. I don't know, I don't know. I'm not a gambler, so I you know, but that could be uh seven uh is uh? You know, uh is probably the most common uh number in scripture. And and and it's always four plus three or six plus one sixth the number of Man, one, the number of God. An example there is the spiritual armor found in Ephesian six. I think where there are six pieces of armor, sixth the number of man, that's that's how many covers us. The seventh is the one we often forget. The Holy Spirit is the seventh, and the first sixth aren't any good without the seventh, and so six plus one and and so again. The numbers add up, and I think there are very simple math uh hoppers throughout the numbers in the Bible. I mean, it's sure. So I love that you clarify too, that you're not this numerologist. And I've seen instances of this where people will try to take the Bible and Christianity and you know, merge it with numerology and try to show the significance of that. That's not at all what you're talking about here, not at all. You want Yeah, I do want to make that clear. I do not worship numbers. You can find where they think the number nine is divine as in not not just divine it is. It is like you know, sacred numbers are in the Bible, are not sacred. They signify different things, and they help us to understand. I think they'll use They were included partly because God is a very orderly got that's what my first book is about. It is about, you know, the orderliness of creation, which makes it measurable, which means we are we can study it, and so and so it's you know, every every aspect of science is mathematical. There it can be reduced to numerical relationships. And and we don't want to get into that because most people don't, you know, afraid of science. But it's true, we can't. We can't study the natural realm unless it's ordered. And it is, and so it's sensible reasonable to assume that God is ordered. He says as much. He talks about the fixed order of things in Jeremiah, and he commanded the church to be that all things be done in order. And so he is an orderly God, and his word, his written word, I think, is consummately ordered. Again, there's a. Number of things I loved about this, doctor David, that this this study. That you're doing. Now, obviously numbers are significant, and you can see the order of God's design, which by the way, destroys the theory of evolution of chaos into order doesn't make any sense whatsoever. But you can see that with the human genome sequence. I mean, there's all these numbers that are in here, and we can see that numbers are important to the Creator because the enemy also has numbers, like for example, you know the Freemasons with their order will have the thirty third degree as the highest level. So numbers are important to the enemy. Why would these numbers be important to the enemy. Well, because he's a copycat, because he has no original ideas or thoughts. He cannot create, so he always steals from the Creator in this right. Yeah, I don't doubt that at all. Satan is crafty and he understands the nature of God more than we do and will use any means. And so I do want to make that clear. I do not worship numbers. And again you can find stuff on the internet where they number nine is uh, you know, some kind of magic number and it's got divine powers or something. I mean, uh, it does not. Uh. It nine signifies the Kingdom of God. Uh. There's a lot of There's more nines in the Bible than you think. There are nine beatitudes, there are nine gifts of the nine gifts of the Spirit in one Quensiance twelve. There are nine through of the Spirit in Galatians five twenty two and twenty three and nine always you know, signifies you know, divine, you know, the kingdom of God. And it again that simple math six, the number of man three, the number of God six plus three is nine Jesus fully human six, fully God three nine. And so in Revelation one, when the apostle John has his first vision, there in Revelation one, he sees, you know, one like a son of Man, and he describes him and guess what nine features, six of which are body parts as a man, and three which are royal golden sash, a thundering voice. I forget the other one, but there's three I'll say, divine supernatural features, six human body parts. And so you know, I don't know, there's too many of these to ignore. And these are things that again I have to to give credit to God. I'm not smart enough to come up with all this. But it's a repeating pattern. There there are you know, uh nine, And I talk about a lot about the number nine in in the book because nine and four are heaven and earth, uh you know, And so where there's there's a bunch of nine and four combinations, which again are there's too many to ignore. And again I I I will put myself forward and confess my sins. I was a skeptic. I it can't be. And uh, you know, there are too many coincidences that at some point you have to start accepting. Uh. You know that numbers mean something in scripture and are consistent and and just be clear, I don't have the I'm not. I'm not the world's like. I've studied it. I've read what others think, and I have an opinion. But it's it's it's it merits study, is what I'm saying. And so I encourage, you know, people to read the Bible and to think about, pray about the numbers because they give us spiritual insight. Just like you know, understanding the Greek and understanding the Hebrew and the you know, the original language is very very valuable. So are the numbers and the numbers in the Christmas account. There is you know, uh, there's not many numbers actually given, you know, three gifts, you know, et cetera. But you know, it's more just reading and finding consistencies for things happen that are identical. Uh. Joseph has four dream four times an angel appears to Joseph in a dream. Uh. And gives him instruction, and Joseph obeys. And there are four prophecies in the two two accounts, all of them in Luke all and three of them in Luke one, one in Luke chapter two. And again it's just there's there's too much to ignore. And that's why I became firmly convinced, and and you know, decided to write it, write it into a book, just so it would be memorialized. I mean, so it would be there for absolutely. Yeah. So I know we've we've touched upon this, and I'm sure my audience is probably screaming at me right now saying that go through the numbers. Uh so if we could, if we go through one through nine, or one or ten and shows the significance of each of these numbers biblically. Okay, Number one is the number of God. Uh. Deuteronomy sixty four. You know, the Lord, our God is one, and uh, you know Ephesians four, Paul speaks of one spirit, one faith, one baptism. Well, God is always one. Jesus wore a seamless robe. His robe had one piece and that's that was a very expensive robe. But it's but it's also uh, you know, they did not divide it up. They left it as one. And that's that's you know, John is giving us a message there, right. Two again is the number of really a decision. Man's will is a reality. The second psalm is why do the heathen rage? The reality is, you know some one is you know, bless is the man who you know? Uh? And and uh, you know he'll be like a tree, et cetera. Psalm two David turns to why do the heathen rage? Uh? The reality is that's what heathen people do is rage, and so uh and that's that's that's the nature of man. And so two there are two trees in the garden, obviously denoting a man's choice. We chose badly and you know we you know, there are two temptations in the scripture Jesus who who was? Who did not? Send Adam who did? And again, so two is always a uh, it's a bad number. It's the number of man's will. Okay. Three is the number of the Trinity. Okay, when Isaiah sees the Lord. In Isaiah six, the seraphim say Holy Holy one for each person of the Trinity. And a really fascinating scripture which i've discovered was whenever God comes to Abraham. I think it's justis eighteen, whenever he is called. In doctor David. Let me pause you right there, because we've hit that hard break. Now. I know the audience is going to be like, oh my gosh. Both don't worry, We're going to come right back. This is Caleb call. You never know what you're going to get on this show, but it's always going to be Jesus' focused. And if you like that, hit the done a button for us. All right, with that, let's go ahead and go back to our guest, doctor David Elliott, and we're talking about the significance of numbers biblically, and I had to cut them off, but we're going to come back, and we were on the number three. Yep, So go ahead and take it away. Doctor. We're going to say, if you want to read a fascinating passage, read Genesis eighteen. When the Lord says the Lord appeared to Abraham he was sitting in his tent in the heat of the day. It says three men came. But if you read the passage, it interchanges between three men and the Lord. Sometimes the Lord speaks, sometimes the three men speak. It's both three and one, and it's it's deliberately vague, you know. And so it's it's a fascinating look at the nature of God. And I'm certainly not here to explain the trinity. But God is three and he's also one, and those are both divine numbers. Four is the number of interests in this book. It's the number of creation of earth and the fourth element of many many lists the fourth of the Ten commandments, The fourth et cetera refer to some geographic location or you know that's something to do with earth or creation. Five is the number of grace. Uh. David chose five stones when he faced Goliath, one plus four, and so it's very noteworthy that the four referred to creation. One to God, how many did it take to kill Goliath? It took one, and is telling us he did not need the four, he needed the one. And so again, who you know, why would they mention five stones unless there was some significance. And we learn that David went in the power of God, by the grace of God. He faced Goliath, and he triumphs because of the presence of God, and he if you read the narrative, he gives God the credit in this day. He's going to deliver you into our hands. Six is the number of man. That's we've talked about that and that's that's repeated. You know, Jesus underwent six human trials. Interestingly, three were by the religious group and they found them guilty all three times. Three were by the political groups. Herod Pilot and they found them innocent all three times. And so again, Uh it all, it all adds up, as they say. And so seven is the number of the Holy Spirit, the spirit action on earth. Almost all the sevens are divided into six plus one man in need of God for completion, four plus three earth God's activity on earth, and there's sevens. Uh, you know it's I've there have too many sevenths for me to collect. I keep a collection of each of the numbers that I find them. Eight is actually the number of restoration. It is seven plus one. It is the number of revival restoration. David was the eighth son of Jesse. Babies are circumcised on the eighth day. There were eight people in the arc Noah, his three sons and their wives. So eight survived the flood. And my favorite eight is Elijah performed eight miracles. And as I say, you can look it up, you can count them. Because and what did Elisha, his his apprentice, asked for. He asked for a double portion of his spirit. Guess how many miracles Elisha he did? Sixteen? He did twice as many as Elijah. That that that was the one that made me say, you know, there may be something to this number thing. That's that's remarkable. And I went through a and Elisha did sixteen miracles, the last one after he was dead. It's it's, it's it's amazing. Nine. Nine is the number of the kingdom. But nine is also the number of finality of judgment. There are multiple times Hagi, Jeremiah, Nehemiah all pronounce judgments on the earth, on somebody and lists nine particulars, nine things, and usually they're all divided into three, three plus three plus three or six plus three. There's there's, there's subdivided into multiples of three. And again, I think nine is the kingdom number and the truth of the kingdom, the kingdom reality is Jesus was fully human, six, fully god, three nine and so, and Matthew has a bunch of nine. Jesus appears on a mountain nine times in Matthew Uh again, they say you can look it up. First one is this temptation. The last one is the Great Commission. But there are nine times in in in in the Gospel of Matthew, angels appear nine times during Jesus's life, three times before his birth, six times after three and six. And number ten is also a divine number. Some writers call it the number of ordinal perfection. Uh, it's it's completeness in order. I actually think, and I'm sort of researching this right now, the number ten, I think is the number of Covenant, ten commandments, ten plagues. You know, there are ten signs in the Gospel of John, ten miracles. John calls them signs. They're ten, and so I believe it. You know, ten represents covenant as in the New Covenant, as in again. Uh. You know, Emmanuel come to earth, best, the best news there is. And there's a lot of tens in scripture. There's a lot of prophecy, ten horns, uh, ten ten nations. In fact, at the at the point of Covenant. That's where I got interested in this is in Abraham's Covenant when he said, I'm going to have a covenant with you, and the sign is going to be circumcision, and he promises him ten nations. There's a listing of ten nations. There are ten gates in the walls of Jerusalem, my three. I mean, there's there's ten kingdoms that are established before the rise of the anti Christ. Ye're right, yeah, that's right. And uh, and there's there's a lot of tens and uh. Uh. You know, when Paul says, for I'm convinced that neither death nor all that Romans eight thirty eight thirty nine, he lists ten things. There are ten assurances, you know again, covenant assurances that you know, we cannot be separated from the love of God. And there there are there are more. There are ten curses as well, in in the Book of Numbers or something like that. And so it happens again and again. Uh. And the Passover is worshiped, is celebrated ten times in the Bible, first time being in Egypt, and the last time at Jesus' crucifixion ten times. Okay, again, one more question and then we'll plug your website here. But what would be the significance of twelve with like the twelve disciples. Twelve is a number of governmental perfection, uh. And and and it's it's not it's well, it's you say, I say, it's none used often. But there are ten tribes in Israel and twelve apostles and twenty four elders which are and and you know they're they're identified as the twelve apostles and the twelve tribes, and so and again unless they want us. They don't want us to worship numbers. And so every listing of the twelve tribes in the Bible is different. I mean they list them in different order. They leave somebody out, they you know, they And every listing of the twelve apostles is different. The only similarity is that Peter is always named first and Judas last. But in the middle they mix them up. And so they somehow they don't want us to associate a tribe or a apostle with a number. And so, but the number twelve is the number of governmental perfection, and that's it. The number. By the way that the higher numbers. Forty is the number of testing. There's forty days, forty years, forty lashes, forty you know, there's a lot of forties. It's always a period of testing. Jesus fasted forty days in the wilderness. The waters covered the earth for forty days, you know. And so I have a suspicion. I'm not a psychologist, but you know how they say to to mid life crisis, to change, to change a habit, it takes six weeks forty two days. I was thinking the midlife crisis when you hit your forties and everybody seems to go nuts. Yeah. Yeah, I have a suspicion that forty days is how long it takes to break a habit or to change the habit or develop a new habits. Again, I don't I'm not a psychologist, but I have a suspicion that that's probably true. You know, Okay, yeah, well, I mean you could certainly test that if anybody's wanting to break a habit or establish a new habit, maybe give it forty days right there. All right, So let's let's go to your website. I want to push this and because I want people and you said, this is under construction, that there's still your news book is not part of this. Book, is there. It's being built in now. Yeah, okay, So just tell us a little bit about your website here, sir. Well, it's it was put together after I published my first book, which is The Air, Earth, Fire, and Water, which is a book about the created Earth, and it's the Science of Earth is a course that I teach that I developed at done a Christian university, and you know, I wrote this. This is the content of the book, and it's it's by the way, it's it's a book of science, but it's written to be accessible. It's a it's a course for non science majors, and it's probably written on a high school level. And so it's it's you know, very accessible science. And we don't get heavily into the chemistry, biology and physics of Earth, but we do talk about the order found in Earth. That's that's what interests me, that's what fascinated me. And and so the second book is really about the order found in scripture, specifically with the Christmas accounts. Uh. And again the second book, I don't it is a book about Christmas, but it's it be good for any time of the year and any for anyone who wants to, I guess, to have a deepening understanding of of you know, what the Bible teaches and learn. I think it teaches us about the nature of God, and the numbers help us understand the nature of God. And that's what I really, that's what I want. That's what my desire is for for those who read is and so so anyway, the website is just just covers the books. I'm I'm. Once it's up, I will start a blog and I will uh, you know, write and those writings are about creation and and numbers in scripture and just the orderliness of things, how it flows so beautifully, and uh, you know, science and scripture should not be in disharmony. They are very very very harmonized. And the best way to study science is to begin in the Bible. What does the Bible say? And then that let your scientific exploration flow out of biblical truth. And we used to do that, I mean for centuries that was the. Standard our Galileo and and Sir Isaac Newton, that's what they did. As in you know, it's only the paradigm shift occurred in the eighteen hundreds with Darwin, and you know that suddenly, you know, it became livel became spiritual truth. And then there's a scientific truths that you know runs parallel and the one you can trust is a scientific truth. That's that's very unfortunate, it is. And science has become more and more insane and less credible. Science now tells us that the Earth was created out of nothing, that gender is a construct. So the further we move away from the biblical truths in science, the further science just because something it becomes something we can mock, well, sir, I've really enjoyed this conversation. I want to plug the website. David Leroy Elliott dot com is the website, so you can get the first book there. Very soon we'll be able to get the second book there.
