It's about a bowler, but the advice we get if it applies to just about any infectious disease that might invade your neighborhood. By the way, we're not going to hear much about a bowl in the news anymore. That doesn't mean it's gone away. As a matter of fact, I read a story where eighty seven bodies are found piled up in a hospital in Sierra Leone, including a couple of bodies of nurses, and that country seems to be the only country with the virus is still raging, really raging. As a matter of fact, a photographer for the Washington Post was sent to cover the outbreak and he died on Thursday after collapsing. But they're calling it a heart attack, so it may not have been a bola yet. Also, an American nurse was evacuated after exposure and she wound up going to the nih in Maryland. We don't know if she had the disease, and I don't think we're going to know much about that in the future with regards to any of these possible cases. So we'll probably find out after the fact if any of these people did have it. Unfortunately, it's going to after everything happens, and sort of I think only through leaks, right, I think it's just not telling you what's going on. Well, they've been burned once or twice and so now they're shy, as they say, once bitten twice shy. So this is one of those things for you guys. We'll let you know if anything's happening that's right. The good news, well, the good news is the virus seems to be quieting down in some areas, and the Liberia right, and the country of Mali had some cases a month or two, a month and a half ago, something like that, and it is now declaring itself at Bowler free after the last notation has recovered. So that is good news. Hey, you know, it's time to say a great, big thank you to all the great networks to carry our shows, especially the Prepper Broadcasting Network, the USA Emergency Broadcasting Network, Survival Central Radio, Shake Awake Radio, and of our latest network, around the Cabin dot Com. And so that that was that would be interesting. It's always interesting when we do that. And of course I hope I won't be yawning like I'm yawning. Now, why are you yawning? I don't know. All right, Well, we'll have to see where we can find you some caffeine. We do have some coffee beans. Growing up, some coffee beans I would do it. But that would do it. That would be terrible. Also, don't forget, guys, you can listen to our archive shows whenever it's coming in for you just by clicking the podcast button on the blue toolbar at doom boom dot net, which reminds me, I've got to put up some of the podcasts. I'm a little mind on that. I will rectify the situation at the end of the day. You had a new video, Yes, oh I have. Yeah, we had a video to on concussions because of that football player that wound up. I guess I think they've found dead or something like that. Yeah, they complained about having numerous concussions. Right, and that is something that does happen when you play football or your few box or do mixed martial arts things like that. Those kind of things just are part of the deal, and we don't realize, right, we don't realize just how. Bad they can be. Well, I think it was a great video, and anyone who is worried about having any kind of head injuries or no, someone who's had issues with head injuries or potentially have problems with head injuries should watch this video. I think it was a really, really good video, And there's one we just recorded today which I'm going to work on after this podcast. It's called Hypothermia, all about cold water, cold water, cold weather preparedness. Absolutely, so that's something. By the way, we're going to do videos on cold water preparedness, like falls through the ice or falling off a boat in the ocean after we get this one. That'll be one of the next ones actually that we're going to do. You know, Vermont has had thousands of people without electricity. I believe this is the. Third day already because they had a blizzard. I'm not sure why it happened, and I'm not sure if they know why it happened. They even I think I even heard something mentioned about hacking. Oh my god. Yeah, but they're trying to fix everything. Well and not only that though, but you just never know, You never know what is going to happen. They had a crazy storm in northern California that knocked out power as well, high winds, four to eight inches of rain. This was in the San Francisco A. Picture of a tornado in California. Is that part of that storm? No, that actually was in La I mean, I am telling you, ladies and gentlemen, there are crazy things that are happening in every part of the country. You know what, I know what happened, honey, This is what happened. They were filming Shark Tornado, Sharknado four, Sharknado three. I don't remember which number there up to. And yeah, that was must have just been the filming crew doing that tornado. That's right. If any people don't know Sharknado, that's a sci fi movie that's gone viral. It's basically about a series of tornadoes that start off in the ocean and they bring up sharks. I guess when the sharks attack people on land, which is I would have to say, a triumph of cinematics. The script is horrible, the premise is horrible. You just have to watch it for the hilariousness of the spoof, understanding that they were just trying to mix a bunch of horror movies together. Oh, even in times of trouble, you got to keep your humor right. But it's entertainment, it's distraction. And what is the best medicine humor? Laughter, that's right, that's right. Laughter is the best medicine. And thankfulness is also important too. We want to thank our listeners for their kind words and their support for our which is to put a medically prepared person in every family. It was on Fox Health. Fox News Health and there resident medical expert is called doctor Manny. And doctor Manny had the editor of Shape magazine and she looked like she was in shape, so it was appropriate. And she brought some gifts that she thought were appropriate or get a table hoiday for people that are interested in. Help display of gifts, and she talked about. Each one of them, and sure enough, what was one of. The gifts, knowing was it one of the gifts? It was the last gift, and it was our book. It was the only book on the table, right, couldn't believe. It what doctor Manny said? What you say natural medicine notatural? No, he said, I love this book. What a great gift. That's right, So how about I can watch it? Yeah, so that's good. It's called If you go to Foxnewshealth dot com you will find it under Giving the Gift of Good Health. Right, Giving the Gift of Good Health? So how about that? That was, as I said, a shock, and I can't believe I forgot no idea that was going to happen. What was it was appropriate for me to talk about it? You just mentioned, right? Because right? Because they called and they did it as they get Christmas gifts. So that's pretty cool. And speaking of Christmas, we might just have the answer. Got to get your whole family to put down those smartphones, get together and maybe rouse up some interest in preparedness without cramming it down their throats are fun. I was just thinking about the fun text that one of our players wrote about how they played the game as Nurse Amy. Oh. Yes, they actually wrote some fan fiction. Fan fiction is what it's called, which is pretty cool and hard. It was so it was so awesome. He talked about Nurse Amy's travels through the lands and the raiders and and the people that she gathered in the group because you have to get community members, right, you have to get other survivors with you, and and what some of their conditions were, and a few battles, gun battles and rating and trying to gather supplies. And it was actually really well written. That was awesome. Thank you, Thanks to Andrew Priccard for doing that. We really really appreciate it was so cool to read. I loved it. Well, my darling, your horoscope this week, uh oh has come in and I'm afraid it says. The stars recommend that you either invest in fire insurance or get rid of that cat that's so fascinated with candle. Oh that's cute, so probably idea the fire insurance is you're not going. To rid all right, let me read yours. The stars say that travel and adventure are in your future this week, as your kidnappers continue crossing state lines to stay one step ahead of the law. Oh no, why would they want a kids. Because they wanted you as part of their survival. Group, Charlie. That's they thought the end of the world was coming and they wanted a good doctor, and who better to have in their group. Well, somebody actually said that to me once, said more than one. And I have indeed the horoscope for our audience. Okay, and make it a good. One, audience. Your horoscope is but a drum roll. The stars predict that you'll soon experience new energy, a renewed sense of purpose, and a profound rush of constant of confidence. Wow, that's pretty good, proving once again that crystal meth is a hell of a drug. Oh oh boy, you guys, stay away from the crystal meth. My goodness. Drugs are bad. That's right, that's right. Well, you know, we do talk about some things that are good on this show, and we talk about the benefits of olive oil many times. A little olive oil last night, that's right. As a matter of fact, instead of butter or margin we had, we used. We used olive oil some bread, that's right. That's right. So it's good for for that, for cooking, and as a carrier oil for a lot of herbal remedies as well. But you know what, if you're a fan of great olive oil, and particularly those olive oils from Italy, you're going to have to start dipping into your wallet because the olive oil, the olive harvest throughout much of Italy has been crashing down almost fifty from the previous year. As a matter of fact, production in most countries of olives is forecast to be far below last year's. The overall world output may actually fall about twenty percent now. Even in California, where our olives are produced in this country, the olive oil industry has been slowed by guess what drought, the big droughts in the central part of California, bakers Field that area, and as a result, shoppers are going to have to pay more for good olive oil than they have in the pass and that's when they can find it, and they're gonna have to be very careful about reading labels. So what's happened this year? The weather, and indeed those are things that happened. Weather can get in a way. When the trees were turning flowers to fruit to olives, and the spring freezing weather suddenly turned hot, causing the trees to drop immature fruit. They had a very humid summer, which wasn't good, and that in September there was a big hailstorm knocked a lot of the olives that remained to the ground. And compounding the problems with the weather was the olive fruitfly and it causes a disease that's called olive tree leprosy. Pretty incredible stuff. So is there any treatment? Apparently not. If it is, If there is, there's not going to be anything this year. One producer said that they're not going to be able to make any olive ail oil and all this year. They ran the press one day and then just said the quality was so bad they turned it off and that was it. One small producer said, I had eight hundred trees. I couldn't believe that it was that bad. So I went to check every one of them. Olives on the ground, others still on the tree, but withered, not even a few olives to make oil for our own use. Now that with eight hundred trees, that's incredible. So some worn to short I know, I know this is some worn The shortage could lead to all olive oil fraud in other words, cheaper oil. Yes, they found that already. They did a study in the United States, I don't know, a couple of years go, and they checked the quality and the actual ingredients in these supposed olive oils and that like they did with the honeys that were on the shelves in the grocery store, and most of them were blends. So you think you're getting olive oil, but you're getting some olive oil and something else. This is the problem, and so obviously this is going to be worse. And they're different grades of olive oil, and of course there's extra virgin and virgin and things like that, and they say that lesser grades are going to be labeled as extra vision, that they might even add other types of vegetable oils to it that what I was just saying, right exactly, and interestingly enough, a wrinkle in olive oil labeled labeling laws and Italy allow producers to say that their products are where they were bottled. They're from where there were they were bottled. So in other words, they can get olives from Algeria or other areas, bottle them Lawrence or Rome Italian and say they're Italian. So this is pretty crazy. Look for bottles that say produced and bottled by and bled right, because those have to be grown by the estate that's selling them. And of course if you have one with the harvest date, that's even better. All right, produced and bottled very important. Everyone. Well, here we have in other news California officials. But California is really getting itself into trouble. Weird. They're battling the worst whooping cough cough epidemic in seven decades. Wow, the worstooping cough epidemic in seven decades. As a recent rebound in cases raises questions about the effectiveness of the current vaccine. Because they changed it, yes, a couple. Of years ago, that's right. You know that inoculations and paths have led to fewer deaths, and they still do. But in instances where people do get sick, you know, they wind up thinking that it's related to a somewhat weaker or less effective vaccine. Previous vaccines were found to have too many side effects of the current vaccines. They complains. People complained about fever. That was a big thing. They had a fever and pain at the location of the injection. That's right. They have had About ten thousand cases have been reported to the California Department of Public Health in twenty fourteen. That's the highest number in seventy years. And then cases include one death of an infant, and there have been outbreaks in high schools, middle schools, elementary schools throughout the state. This is a bacterial infection. Whooping cough is also known as pertussis. It causes uncontrollable, violent coughing, which makes it hard to breathe, and when it's hard to breathe, you make sort of a whooping sound. And one of the hardest hit areas the San Diego County, And this is where the story was that I read. There were eighteen hundred cases reported so far this year, and they have they said they had to go back to the nineteen forties to find more cases, and back then. To find a higher rate of cases the final. Year, right right, Yeah, that's and that's what we've been Cough was common in the past. It caused hundreds of thousands of cases and thousands of deaths every deaths every year. But the vaccine was introduced in nineteen forty and cases dropped to less than five thousands a year. That vaccine was replaced in the nineties. Zono, And this is what's called in the nineties. I just thought it was a couple of years ago. Right now, the newer vaccine be a couple decades ago, right, So the question is the newer vaccine is thought to be perhaps just not as effective. And uh it says here that the epidemiologist has in charge of the California Department of Public Health says, oh, more people do need to get vaccinated. He doesn't believe that the low inoculation rates for whooping cough are the primary cause of the epidemic. They say that of this year's pediatric cases, only ten percent of those were not vaccinated. The ninety percent of the people that got the whooping cough had been vaccinated against whooping cough. Huh, So looks like the new vaccine has some limitations better to yes, So a lot of people. Are getting the vaccination. Ninety percent of the children who got it had had this vaccination exactly. I had to read this twice. I mean, only ten percent of those infected in two thousand had not had not been vaccinated, so that means ninety percent had been vaccinated. It's approve. Well, that's frustrating. You take your kids, you have to make that tough decision about whether to do vaccinations or not. And ninety percent of these children who got it, the parents had made made the decision to get them vaccinated for this particular issue because and. They still don't I know. I made a decision of each vaccination in a separate decision, not like whether I'm going to do all vaccinations or none, but evaluated each one of them. So this was evaluated individually. Yep. And these people got sick. That's sad. So it's nothing to watch out for, or we're going to be talking about it. Not a high death rate, no knock on one's terrible infection. And boy, when you hear your kid coughing for any reason and they can't breathe. Oh, it's awful. Both my children had that issue. Sure isn't kids had had childhood croup, Yes, which is another kind of infection. Stephanie had croup and I had to call NAMA one. She was turning blue. It was just I don't even want to go into all the things I had to do to save her. But I had to spend long nights in the in the shower. This team wasn't work. She was actually not getting enough oxygen. Terrible. Yeah, well, anyway, you want to know something, I think it is a good time to readjust our attitude to get more positive. And we're going to take just a minute so that we can slap each other a couple of times and say, snap out of it. Going down the road of parenthood. So you know, it doesn't always bring up the best memories. Sometimes it brings up scary, scary memories. But in between the wonders, in between the wonderful memories. Well, anyhow, this is the Survival Medicine Hour with doctor Bones and Nurse Amy, and we'll be backed with a new attitude. Hey, rereper old doctor Bones, here are you the only one in your family? You're listening to the Survival Medicine Hour with Nurse Amy and some old god doctor. Well, you know, health officials are investigating what may have caused fifty people to become violently ill at an office holiday party in in Florida. The lunch was prepared by a caterer might have been contaminated with staff infection because illnesses erupted soon after the employees ate their meals. Incredible, how fast this kind of stuff happened infectious medical di These medical experts say that staff oureus, a family bacteria that can cause range of different infections, mostly on the skin, is a possible culprit. But ingestion of certain heavy metals like copper, tin, zinc and they also caused the outbreak. And these people were eating during lunch twelve to one o'clock. By three point thirty fifty employees vomiting, rushing to the bathroom with diarrhea, some people so sick they passed out. That's like that scene in Bridesmaids. Oh yes, when they're in the bridle shower, the bridle shop and they all rush to the bathroom, everyone at the same time. There can't possibly be enough bathrooms in this office for that many people. While they're I know, it's horrible. About eight twenty five people had to go buy ambulance to the hot but Luckily, everybody is going to be okay. But you want to know something, Let's talk a little bit about survival settings. In a survival setting, everyone's not going to have an extensive survival garden up and running. They're going to be looking to their environment to see if they can find some edible wild plants. And believe me, it's likely we're going to be less than perfect in our choice of tasty greens, and we sure could easily become ill after trying some new plant that look like it might be a candidate to go on our diet. You know, But most poisoning actually is caused by eggs, dairy products, and meat things like that them contaminated by some type of bacteria. Most animal meat, by the way, is not toxic by itself. There are a couple of fish, pufferfish and barracuda blowfish, things like that. These are exceptions that come to mind, but there are plenty of plants that have toxins that could seriously harm you. Eating the seeds of an apple, for example, if you ate a bunch of them, they could make you sick because they have actually cyanide like compounds within them. And it's very important to be aware of how to appropriately process a particular plant. Some plants are toxic when they're raw, and they're fine when they're cooked. And you have to know what part of the plant is the best sea what part of the plant to avoid it. Certainly, why is to perform some research and all this stuff, and especially what plants grow naturally in your area might have potential to use as food. Some people practice gorilla gardening. That means that they plant seeds for fruits and vegetables in areas not normally thought to be farmland. And I've seen this myself. I came across a patch of squash actually on some empty land while on a hike near the Great Smoking Mountains National Park last year, and that was pretty cool. I mean, they had really beautiful, beautiful squash there. Now, some plants send up red flags that tell you to beware. Extreme caution, for example, should be taken with mushrooms just about any type unless you're an expert at them, and any berries that are white or red unless you've eaten them before without having it ill effect. Now, some foods that are fine when cooked are just not going to be edible and they're raw. As I mentioned a survival. Edibility test can be performed to test whether a substance is safe or not. This is very controversial. A lot of people recommend against it. Some people actually make a living teaching it. And it's sort of in between one and the other. You're right, and the best plan is to find an absolute expert. It's like when you're going to deliver a baby, which we'll finish up a little bit later. It's better to find the person who knows best, that's right, the highest level. So this edibility test involves like a step wise process. You first like rub the plant across your skin, see if you're allergic to it, and put it on your lips. Rub it on your lips. Then you put a little bit in your mouth and you swallow a little bit and increments, and you wait a period of time between between each step to see if you're okay. In the meantime, set some traps, go fishing, plant some seeds if you have them. Do anything you can to avoid having to eat any anything that you don't know right. If you do this kind of test, you always have to be sure to try each part of the plants separately so you know which part might be safety which part might not. I'll tell you it's crazy though, because if you do this thing properly, we'll take about sixteen hours. Well that's what I'm saying to doing that. I know it's it's amazing, but better, but you'd be alive, you know, you will not wouldn't be poisoned. It is pretty It is pretty crazy, though. This procedure is foolproof perceived with caution. If you do have food poisoning, you can expect to see nausey and volmiting, dizziness, vision disturbances, palpitations, a fast heartbeat, confusion, things like that. Now, if you suspect that you indeed have been poisoned, wash your mouth out immediately to make sure you don't have any plant material that's still in there to be ingested. Then you need to purge yourself, whether it's pressing down at the back of your tongue with two fingers, or by using a preparation meant for the purpose, like syrup of ipecac ipecac, which is now. Going to make you dehydrated. You've lost fluids from your stomach. Well, actually, most poison control setders don't want you to use that stuff because they say that it's difficult to figure out exactly how much will work, So I guess the answer is use the smallest amount that will make you vomit. But who the heck knows what that is. But what I'm talking about is if you're in a true survival situation and you could be concerned about fluid intake. Also, vomiting makes you lose fluids, so it's all a bad idea. But anyway, bottom line is to drink clear fluids to dilute the toxin flush it out of your system. Some people use activating charcoal, another product that's has been used to treat poisoning. Activate a charcoal in your stomach and intestines causes toxins to bind to it might keep them from entering your system. But some poisonous control centers don't want to use this either because there are dosing issues and indeed, it could easily give you constipation. You might even have to consider taking a laxative when you take charcoal to help move things along in terms of dosing. There are pre measured charcoal products you can use that comes in liquid or capsule form, superchar, liquid, char instatar, that kind of thing. You'll find them online. But the best way to prevent food poisoning is by being sure about what you're eating. Get a good edible plant guide for your area. Look for one that has plenty of photos so that you know what you're looking at, a description of which parts are edible which aren't. That is very important. And this is something that to remember as a bottom line. If there's still modern medical care available to you, feel sick, get through an emergency room soon as you can. Oh, there is a home remedy that I forgot to mention that some people feel that squeezing lemons and adding sugar, honey and mix and drinking that up actually is helpful because they think it may kill offending bacteria because of the acidity of the lemon juice. I don't know if that's really the case, but this is a home remedy that has been recommending recommended along that same line of thinking. There are people to say the same thing. You use four tablespoons of apple cider vinegar, a big glass of water with or without a sweetener, and drink that. And so those are two home remedies for food poisoning. They might work, they might not. It's hard to say all right. Well, you know what, we should talk a little bit about pregnancy. We were talking we got to early, We got to early pregnancy, and so I think it's time for us to talk a little bit about that. When we were talking about early pregnancy, we got up to the point where people were miscarrying just you know, early things like first trimester type things with. The signs and how to know when you were pregnant without right. We talked about that last week. So you can listen into last week's podcast, you'll find that if you are threatening to miscarry, you might see bleeding, might see material that looks a little bit like liver coming out that it could be some pregnancy material that's coming out. If that's the case, then it's very likely that the pregnancy is not continuing and that you will go on to miscarry. However, if there's just bleeding and nothing solid, then get off your feet. And that's something that I mean. If the pregnancy is going to continue, then the bleeding may stop. Yeah, we have seen people bleed during pregnancy and go on to have healthy babies. So it is not always the worst in the world if someone has some spotting or or some red blood, but it could be. It could be a couple of things. One of the answers of why someone bleeds during pregnancy but it has nothing to do as a baby, is that there's a lot more blood supply in the vagina and your pH changes and you're more likely to get vaginal affections. Now, if you have a vaginal affection and you have sex, guess what you can see Later You might some bleeding, or the next day you might even see some bleeding. So it might it's not always related to having a miscarriage. When you have some spotting, it's it's not easy to tell. So the best thing to do if there is no doctor and no one to go to is just get in bed and see if it stops. Now, one thing I do have to say, I think people need to know this is that the human race is not perfect. We don't always produce perfect babies. And sometimes the reason why people miscarry or threatened to miscarry is because the baby is not quite right right, And those pregnancies, in most cases of almost all you know, will not continue. And sometimes it is nature's way of telling you that that's right, probably going to work. But that doesn't mean the next cot will be just. Signed exactly now. As pregnancy continues, then you can evaluate the increasing growth of the uterus. I think I mentioned that a uterus at about twelve weeks right about at the level of the pubic bone. At about sixteen eighteen weeks, it's in between a few bone the belly button. The twenty weeks is at the belly button, and it grows about a centimeter or so above the belly button for every week until you hit about thirty six weeks, thirty seven weeks until you hit about guys, get close to being due. Now, waygate is desirable during pregnancy. We didn't talk about this. I think you should shoot for about twenty five pounds. What do you think, I'd say thirty better. Okay, twenty five is a little restrictive. I think the bottom line is that you don't starve yourself. I think that everybody's a little different. Some people you'll see are all baby and some people just gain a lot of weight or a lot of water weight too. Oh yeah, so that is something that's important. Some people even get a condition called pregnancy induced hypertension, which causes a lot of swelling, a lot of weight gain, and could be dangerous. So if you see elevated blood pressures. If you're following and taking care of a pregnancy, you should have blood pressure cuff, should have a fetoscope, a way to listen to the baby's hard and that. So those can be electronic or they can be old timey, big sort of stethoscopes with a bell. Essentially that those are so hard to listen to. Though that's true, but in us. Being extremely experience knowing what we're listening to, the majority of people are going to be hearing the mother's heart being unfortunate the mother's. Now the way to tell the difference is that a mother's heart beat is going to be between sixty and one hundred beats permitted, and a baby's heart beat is probably going to be about one hundred and twenty to one hundred and sixty pets. And its highs the earlier the pregnancy. As the baby gets closer to term, it runs like yeah, like one twenty to one right in there. So anyway, if you have somebody that has high blood pressure and they're pregnant, get them off their feet, put them on their left side, and that position they will be at the lows of blood pressure. And it may and have their legs raised a little bit so that they might be able to drain some of that excess fluid. So this is something that I think is important. Now we have to keep going in the pregnancy. Now we're hitting the DO date. Just about it. As a woman approaches DO, there's gonna be a few things that are gonna happen. The fetus will begin to drop, and that when I say that, I mean I say that it assumes a position deeper into pelvis, and the belly looks different, doesn't stick out as much, makes it just feels looks lower. And knowelly that the woman experiences more frequent urination because guess what, that baby's head is lower and causing more pressure on the bladder. Sure, you may have a lot more back ache, your your legs and your thighs may start to hurt because as that baby presses into that area, it can compress nerves. So you may experience back aches and leg pain that you never had before. Right, And you may also have lessening of heartburn and difficulty breathing because now that the baby moves down, you're having less pressure up on the diaphragm, on your stomach and your lungs sometimes late pregnancy, before the baby drops, you're like, it's so hard to breathe, you can't get comfortable. So you may notice a shift yourself if you're the one who's pregnant. Now, as the neckabo uterus, which was called the cervix, as that relaxes, the patient might notice sort of a mucasy discharge and sometimes it has a bloody component, and that's called what the. Mucus plug, and that is the inside of the cervix. As the cervix is opening up, which is going to dilate, there's a there's a mucus plug there that's been protecting the baby's environment. It's been keeping any kind of bacteria and contaminants in the vagina from getting up into where the baby was and invading that area, so that when you have the dilation, that plug, which can be bloody, can come out. Now it looks like a big, snotty clump, right it does. It looks exactly like sometimes there is a little bloody like a hawker. Sometimes there's a little blood in it. As you as you're approaching the beginning of labor and approaching term what we call full term. Now, when the cervix is ripe, it actually feels different. A cervix that's not ripe is hard like your nose, let's say, and a cervix that's ripening up will feel if if you examine with two fingers of a gloved hand, it will feel like you're cheap or your lips. Right, Yes, so I did mention that. Okay, Well, now there are different phases of labor. There's what we call a latent phase, the early part, and there's an active phase, which is a late part. And I would say that Layton phase lasts until you hit about three or four centimeters, and that and that circumstance, you're going to have contractions are going to be regular, but it's the dilation of the cervix. The opening up of the cervix is going to be relatively. Slow, and your labor can start and stop right until four centimeters. Once you hit four centimeters, it's kind of like you you fell off the ski slope and now you're just going down, but before you were trying to climb up, and you kept going and stopping and going and stopping. That's why people have complaints of false labor. Right, well, let me talk right good. I want to just say that with false labor, if you put somebody on bed rest. You know, many people start having contractions when they're late in pregnancy because they're doing stuff. To have them stop doing something right given flues. If they if indeed they're not in real labor, if it's false labor, the contractions will slow down and they go away. Actually get here, May I come back for a few days. So that's important. Now when real labor occurs, however, contractions are going to keep going more frequently despite getting off your feet, and so to identify a contraction, what you do is you'd feel the skin, okay, or on the belly where the top of the uterus. Camera we're demonstrating all of this. Yeah, I'm feeling I'm feeling your tummy under So the top of the uterus is called the fundus, is what we call that. And it gets hard, hard, hard, like your forehead when you're having a contraction, and it gets soft like your cheek again when you're in between contractions. Contractions will go between two three minutes, four minutes. It just depends that every two minutes is what we'll see late in the game. And if contractions are coming faster and more furious. Then you may even with better rest, even with hydration, it might just be time to have a baby. Now, you might see a gush of watery fluid from the vagina, and that signifies breaking the water. That is also a sign of an impending labor and delivery, sometimes depending delivery, and but the timing of this is very variable, depending on what's going on now. The delivery of the baby is best accomplished with the help of an experienced midwife, right, yes, exactly, or obstetrician, but of course those professionals are going to be few and far between in a survival setting. So if there's no chance, right, if there's no chance of accessing modern medical care, it's going to be up to you to perform the delivery. I want you to is wash your hands, put gloves on if you have them, and have them by the way, make sure you have them. Set up clean sheets so that there's going to be the least contamination possible. Tuck a sheet under the mother's rear end and. Then sorry, I'm not getting on the desk to demonstrate this. Right, and then I want you to spread it on your lap while you're in front of the mothers. So that the baby, which comes out very slippery, will land onto the sheet instead of the floor if you happen to lose your grip on it. That's right now, I want you to. It's a towel on the mother's belly, and this is gonna be where the baby will go once it's delivered. It's gonna be important to dry the baby and wrapping an in this towel as newborns lose heat very very quickly. Newborns are also susceptible to infections. To avoid touching anything but mother and baby, if you can, if you can now, as the labor progresses. This is. As the labor progresses, the baby's head's going to move down the birth canal and the vagina will begin to bulge. The baby's head begins to become visible, and we call that crowning. And if the water hasn't broken, the lighting of the bag will appear as sort of a slick gray surface. If you just push on a little bit, it probably would pop. It pops on its own in any case, so it sometimes helps the process along. Sometimes it does. To make space, put two gloved hands along the edge of the vagina called the parandems. Spread the area out using a little general pressure this well might give the baby a little more room to come out. Now, with each contraction, the baby's head comes out of a little little bit more. Don't be concerned if it goes back a little bit after the contraction. It'll make steady progress downward and more and more of the head will become visible. You encourage your mother to help by taking a deep breath with each contraction, then pushing while she's slowly exhaling. And this is something. As the baby's head emerges, you're going to see that it'll face straight down or sometimes straight up, and then it usually turns to the side. The cord might appear to be wrapped around the neck. If this is the case, just gently slip it over the baby's head. In rare cases of the cord may be very tight, might even prevent delivery. Clamp it with two clamps and then cut in between, and this will release intention and the baby should deliver. Gently hold each side of the baby's head, apply general tractions straight down and this will get the top shoulder out of the birth canal, and this is pretty much all you have to do. Then lift up, get the other shoulder out and the rest of the baby comes out, goes on mommy's tummy. Mom can now rest. What you're gonna do is put the baby immediately on mom's belly, clean out its nose and mouth with a bulb syringe. It'll usually begin crying on its own, a good sign. It's that it's a vigorous infant. By the way, spanking the baby is not something you do anymore. If you want to stimulate the baby to get it to cry, you can rub on its back. So you rub on its back and that gets the baby going. Make sure that the baby is in a blanket. Remember I said it loses heat. And at this point you can clamp the cord by putting two Kelly clamps or rubilical clamps two inches apart, cut them in the middle, and there you have it. There's no hurry to perform this procedure. By the way, In general, delivery kits are available online with everything that you need, everything that I mentioned, including bulb syringes, clamps, things like that. Now, once the baby's delivered, it's a placenta's turn. Be patient, though the placenta may deliver will deliver by itself, usually in a few minutes. Pulling on the umbilical cord to force the placent out is a bad idea because you might break the cord due to excessive traction, and that's going to require putting your hand deep into the uterus to extract it. This is very traumatic and introduce infection. And what I want you to do is a placenta appears to becoming, i'd ask the other to give a push and it's usually comes right out. Now once a percent is out, examine it. The fetal surface is gray and shiny. Turn it inside out and you'll see the maternal surface that looks like a rough version of liver. The fetal surface is separated into compartments called coleadens. They look like little sections. And just make sure that all the sections appear to be there. And I have some pictures of it on our latest delivery article that you can check it out. Oh, nothing's neater than a placenta. That's right. Yeah. The placenta, by the way, is something that people have actually cooked before. All. We want to talk about this, all right, let's talk about the uterus. The top of the uterus, after the baby is delivered and the placenta's out should be at about the level of the belly button. It will contract to control bleeding naturally, but in a long labor it might be tired and you might have to massage it to make it firm so that the bleeding is decreased. So general massage usually works. You might have to do it again and again over the course of the next couple of days. As a mother is recovering, there will be fluid and blood that will be coming out, and it becomes more watery over time, so this is something that's important. You'll be keeping an eye out for evidence of fever, foul discharge, heavy bleeding, other issues. And I think we are just about out of time for today, but we'll talk a little bit more about what happens after the delivery and over the next few weeks, and we'll talk maybe a little bit about breastfeed next time.
