TACTICAL TUESDAY: WW2 Resistance Cells, Choosing Targets, Conditions

The type of broadcasting network we have to hit the reset. But to create a true culture preparedness starting at a very young age and filtering all the way up. So let's talk about setting up targets for an attack when it comes to basically when it comes to resistance movements and how the resistance cells fought the German during World War Two. Now, there is a lot of stuff here to learn and to look at, Okay, but when it comes to planning an attack on your enemy, on the Germans, whoever you want to look at, there there are some essential things that you're going to need to know. Now, last time we talked about some of these things. Okay, we talked about, you know, various things like you know, how much how how risky is it to your organization or to that that resistance movement? How risky is it to them? You know, can you make it look like an accident? Is there a place for your guys to fall back to if you need to? One thing that the leader of that movement needs to do is they need to basically look at what are the worst possible consequences of them getting Okay, we talked about the guards, we talked about walls, fences, you know, ditches, moats, all these things that could potentially be barriers to your team completing their mission. Okay, we talked about entrances surrounding ground, you know, like is there cover you know, can you bound rock to rock? Are there trees? We also talked about fighting during the day or during the night, you know, attacking during the day and during the night. Right So, back then they didn't have the night vision technology that we have now. They also didn't have thermal which is something that we have now. So these are all things that you should probably keep in mind if you're a soldier right now. Back then, they probably didn't think about these things, you know, so much. But you know, if I was maybe, oh, I don't know, putting together a video game on this stuff, you know, I'd be thinking about all that stuff. You know, what are the you know, when is the night going to be the darkest? In other words, when is the moon not going to show a whole hell of a lot of light? Right, Because I'm sure all of you guys have been outside before and the moon has literally lit up the area that you're at. I mean, it's not as bright as the sun obviously, duh, Right, but the moon can be bright enough to make it to where you can visibly see someone moving. Okay, there's other things to consider too, If you know, for instance, if you were in a modern situation, you would want to consider the phase of the moon anyway, Okay, especially if you're using night vision devices, or even if you're not. Okay, even if you're not using nods, it doesn't matter, because you need to use that cover of darkness, right. Most special forces units go out and fight at night for a reason. Okay, So keep that in mind that that is something important if you were in a modern setting. Not saying that anyone would ever use this information for that, but if you were in a modern setting and I was going to use NODS, I would definitely be paying attention to the phase of the moon because knowing what phase the moon is in and exactly how much light it's going to be given off in the area that I'm going to be operating in, well, shit, man, I need to know what that is. Is it going to be a lot of light, A little bit of light is going to be just enough light? Am I going to need an ir illuminator on my helmet? Am I going to need an ir illuminator on my gun. I'm definitely going to need a laser, but the rest I don't know. So all of these things matter. Okay, we talked about weather. This is a big one. Guys. What kind of weather are you going to encounter during the time when you're going to be operating? What kind of weather are you going to run into? Because there are times where crappy weather can be, you know, useful to your advantage. Okay, I hate to go back to you know, feudal Japan, you know, and you know, talk about shinobi, you know, not ninja, because that's a fricking Hollywood term. But you know, there is some truth to those legends. Okay. You know, I don't know a whole lot about it. I don't really care much about it, but you know, everybody knows. And it has been reported that those guys would operate when it was raining outside, you know, because it would cover the sound of their footsteps, or it would cover the sound of their movement, it would cover the sound of them opening a gate or whatever. The same thing even applied to the Spartans, it applies to you know, the it's special forces, modern special forces. I'm sure a lot of those guys prefer to operate when weather is bad, but not too bad, right, So if you have something out there that is obscuring the vision of your opponent or it makes it difficult for people to hear you, then that's awesome, right. Don't let it be so bad though that you can't hear your own guys, and you can't you don't know what's going on. However, in a modern day sense, there are probably some scenarios where spec offs don't operate during bad weather because their overhead satellites and their you know, drones and things like that can't see what they're doing and can't help them, or in AC one thirty can't help them. If the clouds, you know, if there's clouds everywhere in this raining and stuff, they don't know where they are. You know, it can make things very very bad. So, you know, I'm sure there are certain situations where they don't operate. But anyways, that is a whole discussion for another time, tactical weather. Anyways, the uh, there are some other considerations that we need to go over when it comes to picking a target, like the method of attack. Let's think about the various ways that you could attack a target. Okay. The first thing that you need to do when you're recounting that target is you need to decide. Well, first of all, you need to decide what the target is. Okay, but let's just say I don't know. Let's say it's a rail yard or something. Okay, let's say it's just a rail yard. Okay. We need to know as much information about that railyard as possible. Okay. We need to know what excuse me? We need to know what the surrounding area looks like. We need to know if it's down in a valley or up on a hill, or you know, how it is placed in nature. We need to know what the upcoming weather is going to be, right, we just talked about weather. We need to know the train schedule, if at all possible. We need to know what is moving through there and when. We need to know how many guards are on duty there. And not just how many guards are on duty there, but how good are these guards? You know? Are they are they doing checks every hour? Are they doing checks every minute, two minutes, three minutes whatever? Are they constantly up looking around head on a swivel, or are these guys just sitting in the guard shack watching Rent and Snimpy or something. You know, how long has it been since you heard are Rent and Snimpy? Right? AnyWho? How good are these guards? Are they super alert? You know? What are their orders? Right? Do they have shoot to kill orders? Or are they just you know, somebody who sits and does nothing right. The other thing to think about too, when it comes to this, you know, and it's just a branch off of that tree, is those guards, you know, can can you bribe them? Can you knock them out? Can you bluff them? Can? You know? What are my options there? Okay? But anyways, moving back to the target, the guards are part of that target. Okay, So what is our target objective? Okay? Our target objective, depending on what the target is, is generally going to be to knock that target out of action, to make sure that that target does not keep going. To put it out of action, put it out of put it out of commission. Okay. If it's a railway, you don't want the Germans bringing in any more troops or supplies or tanks or whatever whatever. Whatever. You don't want them bringing any more of that crap into Europe. You want to stop it before it can ever get there. So you'll need to look at multiple factors. Once you figure out, you know, what your objective is on that specific target, you see all this stuff branches off and keeps trickling down. Okay, So you've got the the leader of the resistance movement. Then you've got the entire movement itself. Then you've got the you know, there's specific sections within the movement and agents that operate within that movement. And then you've got the leader who's going to plan missions. Okay, and then those missions. You know, you've got multiple things that need to be figured out through reconnaissance, through all sorts of different means to figure those things out. So there are a lot of things that need to be considered when you're getting ready to go into a target. Again, like I said before, what do we want to accomplish? What what is on our list to have happened to this place? Well, like we just said, we want to add a commission. We don't want it to be there anymore. You know, so we want to blow the rail lines. I'm guessing right, we want to want to knock out the rail lines. Okay, we want to rock out, knock out the rail cars. But if we knock out their tracks themselves, it's gonna be a hell a lot harder for them to do much without tracks on that rail yard. Right, So we need to look at the various different factors involved in taking out those trail those railroad tracks. Okay, So what about the level of security at that rail yard? Okay? Does it have guard towers? Does it have a fence, does it have a gate, does it have a you know, coated entry? Are there guard dogs? You know? What about what about like a normal chain link fence or a wooden fence or anything like that. What about a brick wall? You know, all of this stuff is important. Another thing, especially back in the day, would have been something like like search lights, you know, search lights and dogs. Those are big, big, big ones. You get caught in a search light or you got them German shepherds running around. You know, that's that's not good. You definitely don't want to have that happen. So you need to be looking at what are your options in that area for cover and concealment. Keep in mind, cover is something that is stoppsible. It's Concealment is something that stops people from seeing you for the most part. Okay, keep those two things in mind, all right. So next thing you need to look at is the main entrances. Okay, what about the main entrances to that railyard? Okay, the main instances are probably going to be centered around where the trains come in and go out of that of that railyard. But there's also going to be you know, barracks or you know, buildings, whatever you want to call them, for the staff for the train yard, personnel for guards and so on. You're going to want to figure out where do the guards sleep? Do they sleep on on site? What about the rail yard staff? Is there anybody that lives on site or sleeps there? Or do they all go home after their shift? Okay, all of these things need to be answered before anyone makes a move on any objective. They need to be thought about again. You know, what kind of fences are we looking at? You know, what kind of security is there? You know, if the sabotage you want to do is significant, can you make it look like it was just an accident, you know, the derailing of the train or whatever. Can you make that look like it's just a freaking accident? Is that possible. I don't know, maybe maybe not. Now, Sometimes when the resistance would attack a target, they would have simultaneous attacks going on in other places, or they would have multiple attacks happening at the same time in in an area. Okay, So if you have let's say and keep in mind, we you know, multiple episodes back, we talked about the different types of fighting back, like different ways that that resistance would fight back. Okay, we talked about propaganda, passive resistance, uh sabotage, all kinds of stuff to We talked about a lot of it. Okay, there is there, there's there's a good doctrine to follow that when you know this this initial attack is happening, another attack should be happening at the same time. So let's say you're going kinetic. Okay, Let's say you are going to derail that train car and all the other cars behind it or whatever the locomotive, and you're gonna, you know, mess up those tracks. Okay, that is a pretty you know, it's gonna draw a lot of attention to you and your team. Okay, So keep in mind that you at the same time that that's going on, you can also accomplish other things, right, So let's say you've got a whole group of propaganda experts with your team. Those guys can be working on propaganda while your sabotage team is doing what they do best. Okay, you could have a minor sabotage operation going on at the same time as the major sabotage operations going on as well, one of each. Okay, you could have more, you know, instead of two, you could have three sabotage emissions going on at the same time. Right, and not all of these need to be done by your specific resistance cell. Okay, they could be done by other There are people, they can be done by other groups. They could be done a whole plethora of different ways. So that's something to consider, if at all possible. On top of that, it may take your resistance team some time to work out how these attacks are going to work and what you're gonna do and where you're gonna hit and so on and so forth. Okay, now I'm trying to think of how to word this. Okay, there are ways to perform There are different ways to perform various types of attacks, Okay, but the simplest way should usually be the first choice. Because when something is simple, right, keep it simple, stupid. Simplicity generally has the best chance of success, especially when it comes to anything like that. Simplicity has the best chance of success. So keep that in mind when you are looking at planning something like that. Hell, keep that in mind when you're planning to fix up your house or build something, or you know, work on your car or anything. Simplicity is always going to be the best. That is something that you absolutely cannot let go. Okay, Next, we just talked about multiple ways that you can plan attacks, and the the podcast before this one, that was what that was about. That we've gone through quite a bit when it comes to planning attacks. Now, there are there are some other things that need to be considered when planning attacks too. We've talked about quite a venom. Okay, But something that you'll want to take a look at that they always took a look at back in the day too, was how are you going to circumvent any kind of security at the place that you want to target? Okay, so let's think about that Raiyard for instance. Okay, that Raiyard, Well, I don't know. We can go modern or we can go old school. Old school. You're probably gonna have some guards. You're gonna have walls, You're probably gonna have barred wire, maybe razor wire. I'm not sure if they had razor wire back in World War Two. I think they did. You're going to have guard dogs and search lights, like we talked about earlier. But can anyone else think of anything else out there? Raise your hand if you can. I'm just kidding. Something else that they might have is vehicle patrols. Right, They also might have a minefield. Crazy as it may sound, back in the day, they might have a minefield around that particular train station because they can't afford to let it get messed up. So they want to create as much havoc or as much not havoc, but they want to create as much uh you know, danger area as possible so people won't get anywhere near that that train yard. Okay, so can you circumvent those security measures? Another thing to think about. Let's let's take at it from a modern standpoint, but the same exact target, a train yard. Let's say modern security is gonna center a lot around cameras, It's gonna center a lot around various different types of sensors. You know, you may even have in the ground sensors. Okay, the sensors that they bury in the ground, you know, to capture footsteps. Right, Border patrol uses those all all the time. They bury you know, footstep sensors all over the border. It is pretty cool what they do. They've got IR cameras, they've got thermal cameras, They've you know, night vision IR or whatever whatever, you know, They've got all that stuff right in a train yard. They may very well have night vision cameras, they might have thermal who knows, but they are going to have night vision cameras. They're probably gonna have guards on duty. They're going to have fences. I don't know, you know, to what extent they want to. I don't know what the word is, but that's something to look at. Keep in mind. Also, not this time, but the time before. We talked about how you're going to get to your target and get away from your target, but we also need to think about if you're going to attack that target, are you going to need arms, Are you going to need weapons, and what kind of weapons are you going to need? How are you going to derail the rails from that rail yard? Okay, how are you going to cause that to happen. You're also gonna want to look at the firearms and the weapons that your guys are going to carry and use. How much AMMO do you need? What about medical? You know? What about extra mags? You know what about uniforms? You know all of these things, and I mean all of these things come into play when someone is planning this type of mission. The other thing to think about too, If you're thinking about, you know, how am I going to get to that target? And how am I going to get away from that target? You need to look at multiple contingency egress routes. Okay, multiple possible egress routes, different ways to get out of there for you, if you don't know what I'm talking about, multiple ways to get out of dodge. Okay. So let's say you've hit your target, but it has triggered reinforcements to come to the area that you're at. Well, you better have three or four emergency exits out of that place. You better know how to take the back door out, and then you better have a way to get out of there after that. After that, general you know egress, right, you know, moving away, the retreat, whatever you want to call it. You know, you need to have those various different paths laid out for everybody. If that's in your group, probably wouldn't hurt to cache some gear along your retreat route. It probably wouldn't hurt to cache ase some AMMO because you can always go back for it later you don't need it right then. If you don't need it right then okay, so an all of that stuff is important now. Then then then you get into the administrative side of it. Okay, you know the kind of orders that you're going to get from the leaders that may be above the agent that is running the team. So think about that for a minute. Generally, you know, during World War Two you had the agent on the ground and the radio operator, but they were getting orders from Great Britain. They were getting orders from the SOE and I six, so on and so forth. So think about that for a second and think about how these organizations operated back then. And you may have your organization. You might be the agent on the ground and you're like, Okay, I've got a perfect target. I got all the reconnaissance done that I need. I've got all the gear that I need. You send the information to home base and they say negative, we have a different mission for you. I mean, what do you do? You freaking do what you're told, right, I mean, there's not really much of a choice there. You do what they want you to do. Okay, So keep all of that stuff in mind while you're putting this stuff together. Okay, there are a lot of administrative things that need to be done, especially when it comes to building this type of organization and carrying out attacks. Cover stories are absolutely imperative. It doesn't matter even if your guys aren't operating, they still need a plausible cover story for why they're there, what they're doing, where they work, what their family is, so on and so forth. Okay, so keep that in mind, and next time we will get a little bit deeper into what kind of administrative roles we need, and then we will move back into some of the other methods of how you set up an attack, where you set up the attack, and maybe some other areas that you would want to attack back then, so we'll have a better idea of how to attack these sorts of sites back in the day.
