She's a farm a farmer, she's growing a garden, she's raising babies, she's loving her husband, living a natural life. She still does like to eat cookies. And I'm right there with her on that one. But she's an author, a photographer, a mama, a wife, a homesteader, and a homemaker. But most importantly, she is unapologetically Christian. Amy, thank you for joining us on Church and State. Yeah, thank you for having me. It's an honor to be here. I love that you threw the cookies thing in. I totally forgot those on my website. Well, let me ask you, what's your favorite cookie? Oh Man Newman's Own makes these organic cookies that are like knockoff Oreos. They're the best. Okay, all right, see I'm not the biggest Oreo guy. In fact that the stuffing like people are all about the double stuffed ores, I guess too much. Like stop it. No, I like a good Ranger cookie with the corn lakes and the coconut and the chocolate and all that. Ye like, yeah, just basically garbage and a cookie. It's right, they're good. But anyway, let's talk about homesteadying here. Now. You run really a national organization here that you do events and you bring people into this time it's going to be Virginia, but you've done them in Tennessee and other locations, and you're teaching people how to homestead. And I think this. Is so important for the American public to get back to the basics, to get to where they can exist on their own land. And even if you have if you're in an apartment, there are certain things that you can do to start growing some of your own food. Yeah, you know, the movement kind of started slowly. Of course, back in the day when our grandparents and great grandparents, they didn't call it home steadying, although my grandma did talk about living on the old homestead. But we started this organization in twenty sixteen, and we had our first event in twenty seventeen, and it started as just a way to get together with the people who were like minded, because it's hard to find like minded people in home studying, in church and politics and all kinds of things. And so we started the organization and we started the first event and we were expecting maybe three hundred people to come, but we had fifteen hundred people come that first year. And suddenly my husband and I were like, Okay, hold on, there's something else happening like this is this is a big deal. And of course we had events each year. We had, you know, twenty five hundred, the next year three thousand, and COVID hit of course in twenty twenty and everything was shut down, including the event facility that we were supposed to have it at. And then when twenty twenty one came, we saw over six thousand people come. I would say it was probably closer to like eight thousand, and the facility couldn't even hold that many people. It was just crazy. And so people are coming back to home, studying and growing their own food and taking control of their health because they've discovered that they can't depend on the food system, and after COVID, they definitely can't depend on the health system. And so this movement is constantly growing. You know, I got to tell you what I love about this. I am a Christian libertarian. My audience knows that about me. But part of libertarianism is always being very skeptical of government, especially big government. And homesteaders they already have that mentality, like they don't want to rely on the government. When a catastrophe occurs, they look internally, they look to the church, They live to family and they're growing their own food, they're raising their own animals, they're beekeeping, they know how to work with leather. I mean, this is the kind of stuff to be self sufficient that I absolutely adore. Yeah, yeah, it's incredible. And you know, the beauty of it is that not every home setder has to have all of the skills. You know, when people first start home setting, they think they have to have every single skill so that they can be self sufficient. And we don't even use that term anymore. We use more of like community sufficiency or just sustainability, because when you look at farming history, you know, pre and dust Revolution, everyone was at home, dad, mom, kids, Everyone was at home. Dad was maybe picking up odd and end jobs or doing farm work and providing for his family. It was all hands on deck. And not just that, but the whole community surrounding that homestead was the same. Like there was a farmer that was growing wheat and apples, but then another farm might be keeping all the bees and having all the dairy cows, and so it truly is community sufficiency, and we are trying to create that kind of a network of homesteaders regionally. You know, who are the homestetters in your region that you can talk to and count on and come together and barter and trade and all of those things. And of course, you know, the crazy laws that we have in the United States regarding food makes it very difficult to buy and sell the food that you want. You can give it to somebody, like raw milk. You can give away raw milk, but you cannot sell raw milk because it might make someone sick, you know. And so it's we're finding all of these ways to build community with not having to do it all each person and kind of spacing it out among different homesteads and farms so that we can do the buy, sell, trade, barter legally and however we want to. Yeah, I'm right there with you. The insane laws. I'm over on the left coast. And we just had an individual in Oregon who was collecting rainwater. Oh my goodness, not rainwater. He got arrested. He got arrested for collecting rainwater because the government believes that the water is their right and giving it back to the public is a privilege. This is the kind of stuff that we're dealing with in modern America. Yeah, it's crazy. We have certain cities like that. Here, I'm on the other coast, which isn't much better right now in Virginia, and there are certain cities in Virginia where you can't collect rainwater, and so people are always asking how do I work around that? Well, you ask for forgiveness later, really, because that's what people to understand. You were born with God given rights, Like there are certain rights that the government doesn't give you. You were born with those rights, and then the Constitution gives you the rest of them, and it's like, okay, let's work together here and figure this out. And so Home Setterers of America is kind of bridging the gap in all of these places. You know, you have home setters and then you have small family farms, which are really a totally different thing. Home setters are more focused on the home, what can I grow for myself, maybe my neighbor, maybe my parents. But then you have small farms that are trying to provide for the community and jump through all of those hoops and kind of bridge those gaps in different situations. And so yeah, it's kind of crazy the laws that we're seeing. You know, some of them have become lax in certain states or counties. But it's just it's not getting too much better. No, I completely agree with that. I'd like to go back and just ask you about your journey here. You know, most people don't start with homesteading. Yeah, every once in a while you might run into somebody that their family has been doing this for generations and they just kind of stepped into it. But I'd love to hear about your personal journey, and especially if this is the case, you know, your transitioned from eating the American slop, you know, and what that's done for you physically, mentally for your family of going to a more organic you know where your food came from. Yeah, so we started kind of seeing the change. Well. I grew up. My grandfather was a beef cattle farmer, very small, not like on a big scale, but he still did all of the conventional farming things. He used all the chemicals and all of those things. So I can't even say that I necessarily started there. Farming was not something I was interested in. I was actually in the media world. I worked for multiple newspapers, magazines, all kinds of things. And it wasn't until our oldest son was diagnosed with childhood asthma that I started thinking, Okay, something's wrong here. They wanted to put him on multiple different medications, and even as a kid, not in a kid way that I didn't like medicine, but I just knew there it just didn't make me feel better. It might have made the symptom feel better, but it made me feel worse in general. And so I can remember that when he got diagnosed with asthma, and I thought, Okay, there must be a better way. And so that's when I started researching raw milk, herbalism, growing your own food, which my dad had done, you know, on a small scale, but you don't appreciate those things when you're a kid and a teenager. Those are not things that you really pay attention to. And so as I started researching and applying what I was learning to our son, I realized it actually made a difference. And I was also struggling a few years after that through infertility, secondary infertility, and even then I'm like, Okay, there must be something more because we were still buying, you know, process stuff from the grocery store. We might have been growing a garden, but we hadn't fully made that switch over yet. And so I dealt with infertility for nine years and finally discovered once I was completely okay with not having any more children, I completely overhauled my diet, even at home studying for nine years. I just did a complete overhaul when completely organic paleo did some keto, lost a ton of weight, and after nine years, got pregnant with our second child, and of course now we have four. And so it's been this incredible healing journey for us because food really does matter, and not only food, but like it really started with herbalism. So I'm I'm a master herbalist and I've written a couple of books about that and realizing like we don't have to go to the doctor for normal, average, everyday things. My three younger kids have never been to the doctor ever, and they're you know, the oldest is six, the youngest is nine months. And that's a far cry from our oldest son, who is in and out of the doctor all the time because he was always sick from what we were eating and the way we were living. And so home studying has healed our family and it has really given us this very strong conviction about what is in our food, and that doesn't mean like we're not purest of course, obviously the cookies, right, there are some things that we eat, and there are you know, if we're on the road and we have to grab something out, we will do that. But our life has been completely overhauled by understanding the benefit just by feeling it. We feel so much better, We're so much healthier. We don't have to run to the doctor like every other family, and it's just been a miracle in so many ways. I absolutely love that story. I mean, as a guy, you know, we tend to not go to the doctor just because we don't want to, you know, or there's like rub some dirt on it. We're fine, we ignore our problems. But I will say this, when you go to the doctor and all they want to do is vaccinate you and get you on some new medication with all sorts of horrible side effects. Yeah, there's a reason why so many of us within the Greater Liberty movement, I would say, are kind of skeptical of what has become you know, big farm and big medicine. Well, yeah, and you have to consider the same The big ad companies are the same as the big farm companies, you know, they're the same companies, they're pumping our food full of chemicals and gross stuff, and then of course they have the cure for it, right, which is just more chemicals and gross stuff. And you know, I have many clients. I have a herbal practice, and so I have multiple clients, and unfortunately I'm their last resort they come to because they're feeling worse off in the medical industry than they were to begin with. And when they start seeing how simple the body works, like the body true is simple. You are not unable to understand how your body works. And at some point we were fed that lie that, well, you aren't smart enough to know how your body works and how to heal it and how to treat it. God created an intelligent design. He did not create a flawed body that doesn't understand how to heal itself or by miracle through Jesus be healed. And so, you know, home studying, we're seeing that in the home setting movement. We did a survey a few years ago and ninety five percent of the people that did the survey and this movement are unapologetically Christian of some denomination. And so there's a major difference between the current home studying movement and like the nineteen sixties back to the land movement, which was very liberal and political and environmentalist, you know, based where now we're seeing. Wait, this is home studying is truly the way God intended us to live. I'm not saying like everyone has to do this, but it is the way we were created. We were born essentially in a garden. We were taught to garden and steer the earth, and there's healing in that, and there's a reason our bodies connect to it. So well. I one agree with you. And in fact, I've said a number of times on the show, the Bible tells us that the herb, the seed, that this is good for us, this is medicine for us. And the Bible, on the same hand, warns us three times in Glatians and Revelation against pharmachia or where do we get the word pharmacy from? Hey, there we go. Words there? Interesting, right, So, yeah, we have the model here. Use the plants that God has created, or use the poisons that man has created. And I think for me, for you, for your audience, that my audience, they're tending towards more of what God created for us. Yeah, they are, And they're realizing that it's really safe. You know, food is safe when you grow at yourself or you know where it's been grown. Herbals are safe. You know, obviously there's some plants there. There is a method to the madness in some ways where you have to be careful, but most of these things. If you can make coffee, you can make an herbal tea. You know, people don't think about that, but the industry has taught you to fear a simple herbal tea over the coffee that you drink every morning, you know. And so when we start breaking down these mindsets we've been fed, we start realizing that they truly are all systems that were created to make us believe a certain thing so that we would never take it into our own hands. And so now we're seeing that we are seeing and awakening globally, not just in the United States, like all over the world where people are waking up. They have a huge distrust because not because they're you know, horrible people, like they're not anti government, but they are anti big government, and they're anti government lying to you about everything health system and food system. And you know, we've had we have conversations on our podcast about how fragile the food system is. I mean, we're seeing this right now with the gas prices. So it's not even just about getting back to the land for health and the way God intended, but it's we're seeing the signs, we're seeing the times, and we're realizing, Okay, all of these things are about to collide in a major way. Yeah, and it's almost like God is preparing Christians, because I do think it's interesting that you said within this market it's almost entirely Christians. It's almost like God is telling us, hey, be ready, like get out of that system, that that beast system. I would say, that's being created so that you can actually be all right, that you can weather this storm that's coming upon us. I got to tell you when you start this journey, I know for myself, like we buy h well, we just bought a whole cality the other day, and I love going into my freezer and just kind of opening it up and like this amazing like and the beef is absolutely astounding. But I got to tell you when a few years back, I did the carnivore diet, and probably as an herbalist and farmer, you're probably. Like Oh but no, I love the carnival. The carnifore diet was fun for me, but when I got off of it and would like drink like some milk or eat a raspberry, I was. Blown away by how sweet they actually are. Yeah, yeah, it's pretty incredible whenever you do a diet like that and you come back to introducing the foods that you love, especially raw milk and organic strawberries or even homegrown strawberries. Like if you had tasted a homegrown strawberry, the sweetness of that is just unmatched. And you know, for us, we have dairy cows, and so we drink raw milk all day, every day, and if we go on vacation or we do an event, we always take milk with us. But there's been a few times where we've forgotten or the jar has broken and transit and my kids love milk, so I have to go to the store and by even though organic milk, and we can't drink it because it tastes like bleach, like it tastes chemically. It tastes really weird, and even my kids are like, I don't like this, and so, you know, I think it's awesome that you realize that on carnivore. My husband did carnivore for a while because he had alpha gal from a tick bite and so he couldn't eat beef and he couldn't eat pork, and so he would start eating chicken and stuff. I'm like, this isn't going to work. You can't eat beef and pork, so the chicken is just not going to work. And it was interesting going back to this whole revelation of God kind of calling to homesteaders. We had a fellowship night here at our house one night and we were talking about baptism and one of the women there she said, I want to get baptized. And it was like eleven o'clock at night. We pulled out the water trough. She got baptized, and then my husband was like, I want to get rebaptized. I'm like, well, that's a whole thing, you know what, let's He's like, no, I want to do it. I feel like I need to do it, And so we did. We baptized him and he immediately got healed of alpha gal and he had had it for forever and he was able to go on the carnivore diet after that. With beef and pork and just really healed his body in incredible ways. And so he said the same thing when he came back to milk and fruit. It was just an incredible taste. Everything tasted amazing. I got to tell you, if I had been allergic to beef for years and I got healed the first I mean you, for like probably a year, you would just see me with like beef jerky in my hand and like a steak on a fork, I'd just be like over here, just I wouldn't want to eat nothing else because beef is absolutely incredible. Yeah, that's kind of how he was. He kind of lied to himself, I think, and he was okay with not eating beef. But now that we have it, same as you. You know, we have Jersey cows and so some of them have steers and we could butcher them, and he just loves beef, like I think that's all he eats now. Because chickens are great. Boiler birds are great, but they're stinky and yucky. And you ask any home sead er, like we would much prefer raising beef over yucky chickens. I'm right there with you. We actually harvest chickens pretty much every year, and it's just kind of a gross thing dealing with them, like it's not my favorite, Like yeah, I'm bringing me home, but not my favorite thing to be doing. I wanted to talk to you about your Christianity and how important this is to the work that you're doing, because I love when faith intersects with you, your your lifestyle, your. Job, and Christianity. When I examine it logically, when I examine it with my mind, but then also with my heart. There's no other faith. There's nothing else that you can pour into that give so much back. And I know that's not why we're getting into it, but really, when you become a follower of Jesus Christ, there's so much that comes back to you that you don't expect. Yeah, yeah, it's pretty incredible because you know, even in home studying, I've had this conversation when we are in the garden and we're in the quiet, and even if the kids are running around, being close to the land God's creation and being God's creation, it's like you can hear Him just so much more clearly when you're doing all of these things, when you're you're stewarding something well, and it's the same in business. It's it's the same when I when I run these events, our events are just covered in prayer. We have an actual prayer team that meets once a month and we pray for these events. We we pray specifically like if there's people who shouldn't be involved, that God would remove them. And we've seen him do that so many times. You know, we've had pre doing that. We've we've had some run ins with you know, some weird people that have showed up up and so you know, when we talk about privacy, right, like when we talk about people finding information and wanting to poke holes in your business or organization, We've been through that. And so you know now we like you said, we our faith is everything. So everything is saturated in prayer. We are constantly seeking the Holy Spirit's direction on just guide us, like where, what should we do? Who should speak? Is there anything happening during these events? Like give us wisdom and just a keen sense of discernment. And you know, I've had people say, why why are you so religious in this event? Because there are tons of people that are not Christian that do come to our event. But I'll never forget that there is a couple, you know, a homosexual couple that was came to our event one year and the guy came up to me and he said, I know you don't agree with my lifestyle, and I know that you and I don't see the same things the same way, he said, but I want to tell you that I have never felt so loved than I am when I came here. He's like, and it's not He's like, I know you don't agree with me. He's like, but you you've never made me feel hated. And so you know, our belief is we don't condone those things, we don't accept those things, and we don't platform those things, and people will get mad about that. But when we have attendees that come that say, I feel convicted because of you preaching the gospel in every single lecture, and I feel love and I shouldn't feel love, that to me makes a world of difference in why we do what we do. I got to tell you, that is an absolutely beautiful story, and it really kind of breaks the narrative coming from more of the radical left that on the Christian conservative side of things, we're just hateful, we're bigoted, and we just can't stand certain people that are that are leading alternative lifestyles and the reality is is that's just not simply the case. In fact, as Christians, we have a duty. We are bound to this to go and spread the gospel that we love people enough to tell them that their sin is leading them down a path that's going to lead a separation from God for eternity. And I don't want that for you. I want you to live in heaven with me, with God. And so I absolutely adore what you just shared with the audience. And like you were saying, you know, you don't have to be involved in everything. You don't have to go there and be well, we need bees, we need a cow, we need chickens, we need a garden. Focus on Actually I say this all the time on the show. Find what you're passionate about, because what you're passionate about won't feel like work. If you just naturally like to dig into the soil, get your hands sturdy, start doing a garden, right. If you're curious about the bees and how they operate, maybe you'll get a few beehives and then start working, as you were saying, in that community. More for the advanced herbalists and so On this website, I just talk about real life and talk about how to live naturally. And I also have a podcast called Home Setting for the Kingdom. On our home Stenters with America podcast, we do talk about religious things. I try not to make that be the focus of attention, though the last few episodes it has been. It just happens naturally, like when you're talking to other Christians. It just happens because that's how we are. It's our life. But the Home Setting for the Kingdom podcast, it's a little bit more theology based, so we go through the Bible, we kind of go through healthcare and home studying, but there's a lot more theology on there and current events that we talk about. So that's kind of That's the one thing I love to do is kind of give others a look into our life and what our beliefs are and how it might help them out. I think that's so important that we have these discussions. I was actually just talking with somebody who wants to syndicate our show, and he told me that Christian shows are actually the number one show in America right now. He said he never expected to see that. But that is so positive for us as believers that more and more people are interested in the message of Christ, the Gospels, the grace that we experienced through Jesus Christ. And I think it's because and I'd love your take on this kind of exiting from the homesteader side of this, since we brought up theology here, but I think because of the amount of lies that have occurred, I think I think COVID nineteen actually had a number of silver linings personally, and I think. People started to get skeptical of. The mainstream media government as a whole, and then this whole attack on true right, it's all relative. Your truth is different from my truth. I think people are hungry for something that is doesn't change, and that truly is Christianity. Yeah, and so it's interesting for me what I'm seeing happen in the earth right now, and especially since COVID is a shaking of every system. It's not just the government system, it's the church structure and system too, like what you and I were talking about before we got on here about you know, certain denominations and sects of Christianity or there's a lot of bad things in it too. But God is restoring his true Church and it's kind of incredible to see that. And that's one of my passions and one of the things that God and I talk about a lot, like, Lord, how do I love the Church? How do I love the bride? And also help with the reformation of it. But yeah, people are looking for a solid and they're looking for answers, and what they're finding is, Okay, the Bible actually makes a whole lot more sense than I thought it. On the other side, what we're finding is people who've been Christians for years but never actually read the Bible on their own are starting to do that, and it's reigniting this fire within them for the pure, unadulterated Gospel. And I truly you know, anytime God is shaking, he says once again, I'll shake the heavens in the earth, and whatever can be shaken will be shaken. And truly, I believe that as that happens, we will see one of the greatest awakenings that we've ever seen. And that doesn't mean hard times won't come. In fact, historically, when hard times come, we see those great awakenings happen. And I think home studying plays a large part in that, and I truly believe that that's why we're seeing all of these groups come together. When I first started HOA, it wasn't predominantly Christian at all, and now it is. And there's just I can't help but think there's a reason for that, because, like you said before, God is speaking to us and he's showing us things that are to come. And people are literally flooding back into the church, and not just any church. They want just the pure Gospel. And so that's what that's what we're all about here, is just the pure Gospel. Yeah, you'll have to for pardon the pun here, but I feel like the world is hungry for the meat of Christianity and is moving away from the world solid of secularism. Absolutely it is, and because we've seen it, like you just said, we've seen these You know everything is truth. Well, no, that's not true. Your truth is not necessarily always the truth. I say that to my oldest son all the time, you know, raising a teenager. Listen, your truth is not the truth. And it's almost like we're seeing that in the world right now. They want truth and they want the real truth. They people don't want you know to just be lied to, even if it sounds good, like, even if it makes them feel good. We're discovering that people they want to be told you're in sin, there is a better way Jesus can make it better. It doesn't mean your life is going to be perfect or absolutely amazing, but life with Jesus. I can't imagine life without him. I mean, I just cannot imagine the things that we've walked through throughout our lives, and the trials and tribulations we walk through. I cannot imagine walking through them without a perfect Savior who comforts me through it all. I completely agree. And one of the other things that I personally believe, and it may be a little bit controversial, but that's okay. That's what I do on this show. I also think that people of the world is paying attention to Christians addressing sin within the church. I think, you know, through the work of people like Mike Winger, who I absolutely treasure, where we're actually addressing church cover up abuse, where people are going after things like the Prosperity Gospel or the Word of Faith, or we were talking about the New Apostolic Reformation before the show began, but Christians as a whole. We're starting to see are resting these topics and I think the world's paying attention to it and going, wow, they're not hypocrites. Right, yeah, I think you nailed it, because there has to be refinement. And one of the things that I find is when when leaders start talking about it, you know, when you have a leader like Okay, for example, in leadership in Homestenters of America, our leaders, our teachers at our events, they were not talking about Jesus until I started talking about Jesus. And so it's kind of funny because they were Christian too, but they didn't feel like they had the freedom to do that. And so I feel like we're kind of seeing that in the church now too. When when we have strong, firmly rooted leaders that are willing to attack these issues, you know, in a biblical way, then we start seeing people start paying attention saying, Okay, the church isn't horrible, it just needs refinement like everything else. And there is you know, there is a remnant right there. God always says I will I will hold it back, a remnant, and so there is there's a remnant within the church that has always been following the word and has now just been brave enough to step out and start dealing with these situations. And the problem is they haven't been dealt with and so long on a huge level. Maybe in a local level, but it's encouraging other people, other leaders, to say, Okay, I'm going to talk about this too. I'm going to stand up for what's right, and there's no reason I shouldn't. Well, what blows my mind, truly, Amy, is you know, just a scenario, right, you have a pastor who falls right and whatever sin it was, and there's two roads that they can take. Cover up, deny right, attack the accuser. Right, that's one road we could take. Or Hey, I am a fallen human being and I sinned and I am so sorry that I did this. Will you please forgive me? What's the better option? There? I think we are. You know, I'm asking the leading question. But what's the better answer. Yeah, it's to ask for forgiveness, right and true forgiveness. You know, this is a conversation that my husband and I talk about, like any pastor or minister or leader that especially that has been accused of and been proven guilty of anything that has to do with children should never really be in leadership. Again, I mean, you can forgive them and you can, you know, go through all the processes that you need to go through, and they should ask for forgiveness and they should change, truly change, not just say they've changed. But there are steps that the church also, I feel like, needs to take. You know, we're supposed to protect the sheep. We're supposed to protect children and followers of Jesus, and so I think that, yeah, that's a great question, and there's processes to it, and I think that we have to stand firm on those absolutely. I mean, as you were speaking there, I'm thinking of Bbert Morris or Mike Bickell. You know, these are individuals that have been in the public eye for exactly what you just described. And you're right. As Christians, we can. Forgive them and we can pray that they will have an absolute God encounter and be freed from this and that they can be restored in heaven. But as far as leadership goes, as far as leading a church, sorry, guys, there are repercussions for sins. Okay, we have to accept that. Yeah, I agree, And again that doesn't mean you shun people. You know, but you still have to forgive people, you still have to love people, but you can do it. Boundaries. You know. The weird thing about so much of the church is they get offended when you set boundaries. But boundaries are so necessary. It's not an either or, it's a both. Aunt like you can do both of these things. Yeah, I'm right there with you. Well, we're quickly. I got to tell you as you were talking there, I had this this image, just a pear in my mind of DC and this event, this Homesteader event, literally right across from each other, and one is in darkness and one is in light. It's like almost when. You can see a storm rolling in and you can see that cloud. It's still sunny where you are, but I'm seeing that with DC and the sun the clarity on your side of the aisle. Yeah, it's pretty incredible. And you know there's spiritual implications to that, right, Like the spiritual realms know it and they see it and they don't like it. But we are advancing the Kingdom in every way that we possibly can because we're called their great commission and that includes in home setting and this movement and freedom, the freedom that we should all be fighting for.
