[00:00:12] To oppose tyranny and fight for the rights of the United States Constitution. We are the Prepper Broadcasting Network. Hello, hello, hello everyone out there in internet radio land. This is Dave Jones, the NBC guy, and I have two wayward travelers right here in the office with me. The Intrepid Commander!

[00:00:40] What is up, PBF family? Good morning. And Ben, the breaker of banksters. We survived, baby. We thrived. They are sitting here right now, eating some watermelon. I gave them an OIT. You put a little dash of salt on the watermelon, man does it make the flavor better and it rehydrates you. Absolutely. It's the best watermelon I had all year so far, I can tell you that by a long shot. So tell us about your little hike.

[00:01:08] Yeah, we got, in all honesty, we got rolling and we didn't stop rolling until we wound up here in the middle of the night. Yep. We were cooking, man. No issues, no... You know, probably the biggest issue that we had was the fact that we were carrying about 25-30 pounds of extra gear we didn't need. Ah. For the whole thing. You know, like if we had to really shave something off, it would have made us faster and more efficient. Yeah.

[00:01:36] So you kind of found out that your go bag was a little more extra stuff that you were never going to use. Way more. Huh. Way more. I mean, we really... I don't know. No. The water was key. We used the water. We used the emergency water. Absolutely. Um, there were a lot of things we did use, but a lot of things... The way I look at it is if we were out there for 48 or 72 hours, we would have used a lot more. Oh, definitely. But for just 24 hours or less, it's like... Well, if we were...

[00:02:06] We don't need to boil water. Right. We didn't need to do... You know... There's a few pieces of equipment we didn't use that we could have used or would have been, you know, come in handy if we really needed it. We'd be damn glad to have it, but... Light being the biggest. Light was a huge one. Light being the biggest. I had brought that headlamp for just in case, and we got into the woods and I clicked that headlamp on, he clicked his phone light on, and we were just getting it after that. There was a whole lot of dark trail marching that's going around.

[00:02:33] Yeah, we'll have to look up and see when the moonrise was, but... It was full, yeah. I was awake at 4 o'clock, and it was bright as heck out. Yeah. It was full. I think once we got out from that under... Out of that valley, we might have been able to go without light, but I think if we really went without light, we would have probably not been done. We would have gone way slower. We would have not been done to probably 4. That's part of the reason future Dan and I think and I took a little bit longer. Oh, definitely. First off, we took the wrong turn.

[00:03:03] My fault. A couple years ago for Dark Trail March, if you all remember that. But, we went low light or essentially no light almost the whole time. And, you gotta go slow if you do that, because there's all types of routes hanging out, trip on, and slippery rocks. Oh yeah. So, but we had full light, so we were going fast as hell, but in a good way. Yeah, we rolled. We rolled. But we failed it. I mean, it was...

[00:03:29] I guess it really was sort of the road out there that was really the last hump where it was like... And I don't know if it was mental. It's uphill. You know what I mean? But... No let, no, you know, no change. Only up at the same incline over and over and over. Yeah. And I'm like, I've driven up this many times. I'm like, it's way further than I wish it was right now. You're like, uh, but... Yeah, I made the mistake of telling me you burned 4,000 calories you didn't have. Yeah.

[00:03:58] So I was nervous. I was like, oh God, I hope nothing happens to him while we really eat. I didn't really have any problems fasting, but I did, because I didn't eat for at least 24 hours before we started or really... I ate a little bit of MRE in and out of this watermelon, which was great, this morning. Um, the energy didn't really hit me bad. Oh man, you were great. My legs were a little like lack of oomph to them. I don't know what that was. It could be lack of food maybe a little bit. Maybe.

[00:04:27] Um, water though. Water. I mean, I brought a lot of extra water and I drink every ounce and I still was like, man, I wish I had more. And you were through the emergency. And the emergency. Yeah. Oh yeah. Yeah. I drank. And I used liquid IVs, a couple of those. Oh yeah. I knew that was going down on 12 mile. Like I was like in that way. I mean, we were soaked. We were literally zero mile an hour wind and just, we were humid, just sitting on top of a forest canopy.

[00:04:54] But my arms were just, so, uh, how, how much, about how much did your packs weigh? You know, we didn't weigh them. We're going to weigh them today. We were hoping we need to, my guess though. So I usually train or just walk my dogs, run with my dogs with like a 30 pound pack on. And I think this was, I think it was less 25. That's, that's what it felt like baby. 25, something like that. Yeah. But it was just, that was a, that was a weird one.

[00:05:23] Um, like I said, if we played it by the, if we played it by the bag only and camp, then there would have been no getting around needing that bag. Mm-hmm. And if we were eating too. We kind of got into this like groove and we, we didn't even stop and eat or anything like that. We were just like, just keep going. We don't need the calories. We need the water. Yeah. So if we, if we'd done all that, if we legitimately camped, I think that bag would have been essential. Right. Yeah. Yeah.

[00:05:52] Because you had, there was a tent in it? Yeah. There's this little, well, we've got, we want to open that up today and look at it because it's, it's a tent that I've never seen before. What it looks like is, what I'm pretty sure it is, is a almost, what is that called? It's almost kind of like, built like a debris hut or open ended tube tent at one end and closed at the other. Hmm. Is what it looks like.

[00:06:20] So, and I think we, we might've been a little too hot and sweaty to climb into that thing together last night. Yeah. That would have been, that. That would have been, that. That would have been disgusting. Oh man. Well, and Ben had the, when I met him this morning, he was out back here and he had the emergency blanket. Yeah. And it was ripped up because it's very thin. It's super thin. It's so easy to tear. And, uh, he didn't have a shirt on and he's like, just pants soaked with sweat.

[00:06:51] He had this thing on. So I'm like, eh, that's probably, probably, uh. The whole time I'm in my car, right? I slept in the back of my car and the whole time, um, my legs, I can only stretch out so much, right? And the whole time I'm thinking like, man, Ben's on that couch back there just stretched out. I'm like, he must be feeling real good. And then he wakes up and goes, they didn't have no couch back there. Then he realized they remodeled and there's no couch. There's no couch anymore. And I was like, huh. It was.

[00:07:21] You know, you could have laid down on the deck. It was kind of like wet. I wasn't too sure about it. Oh yeah, yeah. The dude. I was worried about the dogs maybe. You could have laid on the, what's it called maybe. Like laid on top of that tent thing in the pit, bed of the truck. I think opened up the bed of the truck would have been good. That's actually a good point. It didn't cross my mind at all about you because I thought you were straight. I thought you were like, you know. Yeah. Like gone. I figured.

[00:07:45] I wasn't, let's just say, as out of it as I've been on a couple other Osner Highlands. But I was just only a level or two better than that. You were good, man. So by the time I was up there, I was like, I ain't going back. Like, man, I'm just going to lay here on the driveway for an hour or two. I was really impressed with you, Ben. Oh, okay. Because I did not let up. I was, I walked fast and I was walking fast the whole night. Oh God, maybe I should have went with you to slow you down a little.

[00:08:14] Ben was right there, dude, the whole time. Like, there were points where I was like checking myself and I'd be like, alright, dude, you got up here. It's getting late and we've been going for a long time. And Ben's right there behind me and he's like, nah, keep going. We're going to get it done. We're going to do it. No one left behind, especially my own self. Yeah. Um, I'll say at the very end, we were pretty much like a mile straight up. Not the craziest incline, but not insignificant. Yeah, you were digging deep.

[00:08:42] You were getting a couple paces ahead of me and I was like, I was going like full output. I heard you back there. You were whispering incantations to get back in here. Yeah, expletives and incantations at the tail end. This watermelon was one of the motivations though. Yeah. The watermelon, I'm going to make it. Watermelon, water hose. You got to have those mental tricks to keep yourself going. Yeah, it's true. It's true. And we definitely, we got on there and we kind of downplayed the 12 mile hike.

[00:09:10] And then as we were talking about it on last night's show, I was, I was kind of like, you know, feeling like we shouldn't downplay it as much because it was tough. You know what I mean? Yeah. Exactly. And they tell people, give people the real story and tell them, you know, if you try to do it, it's going to be tough because it would be tough. Well, and it's at night. Yeah, that too. That too. And you had a trail. Think about if you didn't have a trail and had to use a compass and did the same thing

[00:09:39] at night through the woods. Yeah. I mean, people underestimate. You'd be going easily less than a mile an hour. Like you'd be going half a mile an hour at best and you'd be getting beat up. Constantly. Oh yeah. You could easily hurt yourself. Every mile you would feel. Yeah, that's right. Yeah. 12 miles of pain and suffering. And I would say of the 12 miles, only like a mile and a half is flat. Although the rest of it is either all up or all down. Like very mountainous.

[00:10:10] Yeah. And there's almost no like flat ground or even on the trail when you're going up and down. It's very rocky. Didn't cross too many creeks, but one or two where you definitely got to watch your feet. Yeah, that one they covered up I think. That one you drank out of last day. Yeah. When you guys did the lice draw. I think they covered it all with wood. I'm guessing it got super high from all the rain maybe. Had boards over it. But yeah. It was success. I told Ben I'll probably never see another stretch of the Appalachian Trail like

[00:10:40] this much in one sitting. And I didn't see it anyway. Right? You're looking down at your feet, make sure you don't fall. But it was really one of those things like my wife and I we would talk about like maybe we'll hike the Appalachian Trail when we get older and the kids are gone and all that kind of stuff. And then walking on it I was just kind of like, we're not doing that. Why would we do that? Why would we do that? Dude, I had an uncle and an aunt that did. They did the whole shebang? The whole shebang.

[00:11:08] And not once, but a few times. Oh they did it more. Holy crap. And this is when they're my age. Alright. When they did this. We came back in more James. We didn't do nothing. So Dave's got genetics on top of good looks and brains folks. I hope so. I describe them as like the last of the pioneer stock. I got it. Well yeah, shit.

[00:11:35] You know, 12 kids in like a cabin. Oh wow. Up in the hills. When I say I came from the Beverly Hills, I'm not kidding. Some of the stuff isn't funny to us. 12 kids in a cabin and then when they finally get rid of the kids they go, hey, why don't we walk from Georgia to Maine back and forth three times. Yeah. That's incredible man. Yeah, he retired. He was a house painter and she did several different things.

[00:12:05] He got on it first and he would take people and you know, he would do the whole thing. Cause it goes through PA, yeah. Yeah. And probably right where you guys were at. Yep. Yeah. And then, uh, then when my aunt said, hey, sometime I would like to go with you. Ah. And he says, okay. And they just, pfft, pfft, pfft, pack up and go. And then they never stopped. Wow. Yeah. Yeah, it's something. I'll tell you.

[00:12:33] We were talking a little bit about like that pioneer stock or like, can you imagine people landing in Virginia in the late 1600s or Lewis and Clark and all that crap. Yeah. Like not only are you worrying about the elements, where the hell you are, Indians. Everything. Like, oh my God. Yeah, we saw a big ass old growth tree and we were like, were all the trees like this? They probably were, right? Oh yeah. Do you know that most of the United States was originally like Virginia? Cover. Yeah.

[00:13:01] And the reason that it's not is because the Native Americans burn it down to bring in the buffalo. Oh, that's the, oh, okay. I thought we did it. Now, so those, uh. I'm so used to blaming us for everything. I just figured we'd cut all the trees down and fuck that up there. Dude, yeah, the buffalo was their whole, their whole thing. They would migrate. Yeah, they had to stick with them, right? Yeah.

[00:13:27] That was pretty, cause that is an amazing sort of survival set that they had. Oh yeah. Yeah. We're gonna eat and live in and wear and everything. Everything. Make tools from. This buffalo is king. That's crazy, it's true. Yeah. Yeah. That is wild. And I guess that was their only option too, right? Yeah. Right out there in the plains. It wasn't like. Well, and those guys, like you said, Lewis and Clark, holy cow. Do you know they made a law in Virginia to not burn your house down?

[00:13:57] Oh my. And you're like, why would they do that? People would come, set up, farm, two or three seasons, the soil was played out. They'd burn their house down to get the nails and all the hardware out. Because they could get more wood. Throw it in a box. Throw it in a box. Move west. That was the Home Depot. Build another one. And so they had to make a law. You know, a lot of people will say, oh, that never happened.

[00:14:25] But why did they make a law? You could burn your own house down. Wow. Yeah, it's not like Geico was coming and giving you a check for it back then. Right. They weren't showing up with checks. Wow. Yeah, man. Yeah, there is something about Virginia. There is something in the woods and the waters of Virginia that is like, I don't know. It just feels different. You know, it feels so different even when you're in like Richmond compared to being in other states.

[00:14:55] And I mean, I've walked through City Hall and all that in Pennsylvania and Philadelphia and a lot of, you know, even Valley Forge. But there's just, Virginia is just, it's everywhere. It's like in the soil. It's in the air. You can feel it. You're like, oh man, something happened here. A virgin land in Virginia. Something happened here historically. Like if you didn't know. I always wonder what you would feel like if you didn't know and you came to Virginia, if you'd be like, this is an important place. Number one export for Virginia? Tabacke. Wood. Wood. Oh, was it Wood? No, it's today.

[00:15:25] Oh, okay. Number two is wine. There's a lot of wineries out here now. Yeah, I believe that. That's true. I believe that. I saw the coolest thing, man. It was one of those things that were in my neck of the woods you never see. Actually, anywhere I grew up you rarely ever see. But I took that road. I don't want to talk about roads too much. But I took a road that I don't normally take to get here. And on that road, there was a flower box.

[00:15:55] And it was, there was bouquets in this flower box and nobody was manning it. And it was like an honor system. Right. You put the money in, take a bouquet of flowers. I was blown away by that. Oh, there's a lot of those. Is there a lot of those? Oh my gosh, yes. And we were going to put one down here for all our leftover vegetables. Yeah, that's really cool. That's really cool, man. Yeah. Do it.

[00:16:20] But there's so many of them that the local shed guy, he has a stand. Oh, he's got like a model. Wow. That you can buy and just poof. You don't have to build it. Oh. He's got an honor system model. Yeah. Yeah, that is wild. Yeah, so we, uh... So what's next? You're going to go, are you going to go down and explore? I don't know. Or are you going to open up the stuff here in the yard? Yeah, I think we're going to go get coffee at Sheetz.

[00:16:50] Yeah. And then, and then maybe, uh, yeah, probably lay everything out. Maybe in that parking area right there, if that's okay. We should, yeah, we should lay everything out. That'd be good. Because there's obviously two backpacks part of this. Yeah. Two hour thing. It's the Gray Man bag. The Gray Man kit by Lee Metangle. Yeah, the Gray Man kit. Yeah, the Gray Man kit. And then you can get good video. Yeah, that's what I'll... Some pictures, video. The two bags are relatively, like, a lot of things are in both bags, but I think there's several items that are in one bag only, not the other. Yeah. Like the tent, for example.

[00:17:20] It is set up like that. So we should definitely make sure we didn't miss any nooks and crannies of some, you know, And future Dan is planning to come out to shoot the body armor. Yeah. He wants to bring his son. I know, they'll have a ball with that. So I said, yeah, more than the barrier. They're gonna have a blast. Is that an 11, he said? Yeah. Something like that, I don't know. But yeah, that'd be cool. Heck yeah. Okay. I definitely would like to see the kids shoot up some... And Maria's cooking up something right now, so... Nice, man. No, the watermelon's just the appetite.

[00:17:49] So I don't have to eat any more MREs today? Don't. You'll be doing this. Oh, okay. Stick your finger down your throat so you can get it out. Yeah. The good stuff is good. I already ate too much MREs, unfortunately. Did ya? Yeah. It's alright. I didn't eat nothing. I didn't even feel hungry last night or this morning. I didn't either. You ate that vitamin bar though, didn't you? Yeah. What was that like? Yeah, what was that like? It's actually pretty good. Yeah. Because that is a pretty interesting little thing. Did it have a flavor to it?

[00:18:19] Hmm. I don't know how to describe it, but I've tasted it before. It's indescribable. But it's a lot of like... It's like really compressed wheat. But it's not dry like a cracker. Okay. Actually, I got some more left. You guys want a little bit of each? Okay. Um... I've never seen those before. That was the first time I... Oh, you just made me think of something. What? So we used to get these meals, and they were the first freeze-dried meals that were in the army. They were called Lerps. Okay. And in the Lerp...

[00:18:48] That sounds appetizing. They would have long range patrol meals, something like that. Oh, okay. That makes sense. They would have what was called... And it was written right on there, cornflake bar. Okay. And it was like compressed mashed up flakes of wheat. Cornflake. Okay. Oh, corn. And it was flavored with orangey. But you'd break this thing off... Mmm. Mmm. Mmm. Mmm. Mmm. Mmm. Mmm.

[00:19:19] Mmm. It's like vitamins added to it. Yeah, that's what really made it stand out. It tastes almost a little bit... Gosh, I had... I don't know. I had like Chinese or like Hispanic candy that sort of tasted like this, but I don't know what to call it.

[00:19:49] Okay, I got you. It's more like... It's not hard. It looks like a very compressed, like you're gonna break your teeth when you eat it, but it's real soft, crumbles, and like you said, the more you chew it, it tastes better. Almost like a cake a little bit. Yeah. Like a cake. Okay, so it's probably like that. That's exactly the way I'd describe that cornflake. Yeah. It probably is. They both sound a lot like that, like if you got an orange flavored May Day ration, them big ration bricks that are like flour... I always call them like flour sugar oil because that's what they are. Exactly. But yeah, that's similar.

[00:20:19] Flour sugar oil with a little bit of vitamins. Made in China, by the way. Oh. So hopefully they put lead in it. Oh, how about that? Fenton oil. Fenton oil. Fenton oil. Fenton oil. Great. I got no pain. That was really good. Yeah, but they're a good idea. They're a good idea. And it came with a full MRE as well, which is very similar to the ration ruin one. Was it? So I ate a cracker with some jelly on it and the roasted kernels or like corn. Yeah, yeah. And I didn't eat the actual meal part yet.

[00:20:49] Or there's an oatmeal cookie, so. Anyway, that was cool that it had, you know... A full MRE. A full MRE as well as just the little snack bar that was small. I would say it was like, I don't know. Almost like a five... Or a... What are those like? Card? My brain is starting to falter. Like a five by seven? No card? It's about that size. Oh, I gotcha. What are those like? So a full MRE...

[00:21:15] Future Dan, correct me if I'm wrong, but they're like 2,000 calories. Oh, just the one MRE? Okay. So if you get three of those a day, you're eating 6,000 calories. Yeah. That's what they figure you need for combat. Wow. I believe it. Very generous. I believe it, because just... At least according to the app, I'd burn 5,000 calories just marching. Oh, yeah. Yeah. That was just only six hours. So if you're literally... And the rough sack is 825 on the floor, right?

[00:21:43] You can easily throw five, six, 8,000 calories burned a day. Oh, yeah. And we weren't carrying rifles or ammunition. Great point. Or digging foxholes. Or digging foxholes. If you... I'm not sure which was worse. The defensive positions, you know? If you were in the defense, or if you were the attacker. Right. You know? Because they both had... They hurt you in different ways. Right. Yeah, we were talking about the Civil War and how...

[00:22:13] Oh, my. We were probably about eight miles in or something like that. Yeah. And I was telling Future Dan, can you imagine, like, you wake up here, and they're like, well, the battles changed, we're headed to Richmond. Yeah. On foot. Oh, the Gettysburg battle, there was a unit that marched from right outside Washington, D.C. To Gettysburg, and went right into the fighting. God. That is bananas.

[00:22:39] I mean, it was like, they marched 60 miles, and then went right into fighting. And I can't remember the unit. They came up from the south. It was a Union, Union Army. Yeah. And, shit. I couldn't even imagine trying to sell that to the troops. Can you... Exactly! At the end of this... We're gonna go right into the fight! Ain't no damn watermelon coming. No. Okay? You're gonna go into the bloodiest battle of the Civil War. Head first.

[00:23:08] I think most of the guys today would say, screw it, I'll wait till they get here. I'll fight it when they get here. Walk slow. Yeah. It's not going well. Well... Barely, like, leather shoes. Like, I had... Yeah. Essentially, Marine combat boots is what I was wearing. And they were great, actually, by the way. Yeah. But, have a little, like, leather shoes that were, like, half rotten by the time you get there. Yeah, no socks. Yeah. Socks were probably long gone. Socks were pretty optional. Uh... And, like I told you in that D.A.C. The...

[00:23:36] The boots weren't right and left. Your feet made them right and left. Oh, God. They... They made the boots like this, and as you wore them, they came. They turned. Yeah. Yeah, man. That was a different breed of human being, man. Because that is insane to think about. Yeah. Huh. I guess it would, yeah. That's why we at least gotta try not to be too weak in this. Yeah, we talked about that a lot. That's why we do these things. We talked about that a lot, too. Huh.

[00:24:07] We talked about doing something hard and crazy and... You know. Yeah. Just because. Just because it's rare nowadays. You know. Yeah. I love it. At least once a year, gotta do this. I'm down to do it a couple times a year. Not necessarily this hike, although... I'm gonna come do this occasionally, maybe even ride my bike. Not on the trail, but there's another kind of side route I can do. Yeah. Just a few hours.

[00:24:33] Or I could ride my bike like six of the miles, stash it in the forest, do the last four miles here. So anyway. I love that fact, but... I don't know. I like challenging myself, but not so much you get hurt too much. Like, there's a risk in doing this. Yeah, I wonder. We can easily bust our ass and break our legs and stuff. I wonder if we had to, what we could have done. Because you look like you're doing fine. I feel good this morning. So there's... We definitely could have done more. Well, I feel like my legs are pretty cashed out right now.

[00:25:03] Well maybe... Alright, let's say if you had been eating. We... You know what I mean? We probably need just a little potassium or something. Yeah, we... Get things back up. If you could have seen... If you could have seen... I'll show you the picture. I don't know how well the photo was. But I'm gleaned up against the wheel well. Drinking. He's laid on the thing. And we're also trying to be real quiet because Clover's barking. We don't want to make you guys...

[00:25:32] He got up and there was a sweat lake. Oh yeah. It was horrifying. And we're just drinking liquid IV. Oh, and the liquid IV was great. This one's gone long but whatever. It's fine. I ordered lemon-lime. They... They prompted me to get... What the hell are those things? Bomb-pop flavored? Yeah. Oh yeah. Popsicle style. Popsicle, yeah. They prompted me to get that because it was like a prime deal. Yeah. And I was like, well you know I'm getting on a prime deal.

[00:25:59] So I got some of them and I could have swore I clicked lemon-lime and I get into them. We got... Popsicle. Popsicle flavor. Popsicle flavor. We didn't care at the time. We were so thirsty. It didn't matter. Oh yeah. You know what I mean? Who cares? But... Yeah, that was the other thing we were laughing about was the water. I was telling them I filled my... The water container that I used was basically the PAX water container. And we said it was probably about 24 ounces and I filled it up with tap water from Richmond

[00:26:29] before I left. And I sipped it and I was like, oh god, this is rough. And then by the time we got like, you know, to our first water break or maybe our second or third or something when it started to really get hot, you know, it was like, oh, it's the best damn water I've ever had in my whole life. All perspective. Yeah. Whether you're fasting or, you know, really thirsty. All of a sudden, the... You know, laying on the... High and fancy. Yeah, yeah. You know, falutin. Just laying on the...

[00:26:57] No, I'll just give you some crackers from every ring and some friggin' tap water. We laid flat on that driveway out there and it was like a Serta mattress.
