[00:00:38] What is up everybody? James Walton here, PBN Daily News. Thank you for joining us today. We are gonna take a news break man. We're gonna take a break from all things news related and focus on winter prep. Winter prep.

[00:00:59] The wind. Yeah, the wind outside is on and it's howling. Now it's yesterday was a beautiful day. It's gonna be pretty cold tonight here in Richmond, but I want to talk about winter prep. I want to talk about sort of my top tier my faves in terms of winter preparedness. That's what I want to get into. You know, we did an amazing show last night with the whole breakdown with

[00:01:28] Veterans Day and Trump issues and anti MAGA movements and poisoning men and

[00:01:36] It's a wild world out there, you know, uh

[00:01:40] One of our listeners

[00:01:43] That nub

[00:01:44] Um, spoke about getting back to basics and I think

[00:01:47] When we have those opportunities to get back to basics as preppers

[00:01:53] Homesteaders and such we should and

[00:01:55] Yes, this is

[00:01:58] Our sponsor

[00:01:59] Krispy Kreme

[00:02:01] Just kidding

[00:02:03] Their coffee's awesome

[00:02:06] It's a good it's a good break from disaster coffee

[00:02:10] If you haven't been to disaster coffee dot com yet check them out

[00:02:13] It's uh

[00:02:15] Another one of our businesses here at PBN

[00:02:19] And man do we got some awesome stuff up there. You gotta see our EMPT

[00:02:23] You gotta see our gray man Earl gray

[00:02:26] You you gotta see uncle randy

[00:02:28] Uncle randy's porch up there disaster coffee dot com go check them out. All right

[00:02:33] Jay Fergie in the house. Good morning. What is up? We'll be talking about

[00:02:37] Some of your wares this morning on top tier winter preps. I think what I'm gonna do too is turn this article into a

[00:02:44] I'm sorry this podcast into an article with a bunch of links to all the stuff

[00:02:48] I'll put that up at PBN family dot com

[00:02:53] If you're not a member yet over PBN family dot com

[00:02:56] You're going to be consumed by old man winter. Okay relentlessly

[00:03:01] But just kidding, but it's an incredible deal 60 bucks for the year membership

[00:03:07] You get fitness you get preparedness bushcraft politics

[00:03:15] Courses videos podcasts

[00:03:19] It's a ton of stuff. Okay

[00:03:21] All preparedness topics we cover the homesteading angles the prepping angles all the kind of stuff PBN family dot com. Okay?

[00:03:30] Jay Fergie in chat is literally making herself a wool sweater at the moment. I'm insanely jealous

[00:03:35] I have an old

[00:03:37] Spider-man

[00:03:38] Thermal on

[00:03:39] No, I actually love this shirt. This is one of those shirts. It's like so old

[00:03:43] But i'm never getting rid of it, you know

[00:03:47] Until you can't wear it anymore then i'll get rid of it

[00:03:50] Um, but look what I do have at my side here

[00:03:53] Not not a winter prep per se

[00:03:57] But if you're wondering what jay ferg is up to

[00:03:59] Um with her handcrafted goods

[00:04:04] This

[00:04:05] Is the foraging bag

[00:04:08] Uh

[00:04:09] Not bad

[00:04:09] I pulled this baby out the other day

[00:04:15] Oh and by the way you get yourself a foraging bag

[00:04:18] And uh

[00:04:20] You take our foraging course

[00:04:22] Over there at PBN family dot com

[00:04:25] And you start an entirely new chapter of your life

[00:04:28] So the way I do this jay ferg I know I told you about it

[00:04:31] But the way I do this thing is around the neck

[00:04:35] I think it's pretty cool

[00:04:37] Well, i'm not gonna i'm not gonna do it right here now but

[00:04:41] Because it's a little hard to get on hard to get off

[00:04:43] But when it's there it's really cool

[00:04:44] It's like a like a

[00:04:46] Almost like a

[00:04:48] Like an old sort of farmer's wife

[00:04:51] Uh

[00:04:52] You know with the with like the pockets for the eggs

[00:04:54] Pretty cool

[00:04:57] But anyhow

[00:04:58] Top tier winter preps today PBN family

[00:05:02] Thank you for joining us

[00:05:04] Uh

[00:05:04] I guess we'll start with

[00:05:06] Let's start with clothing

[00:05:09] Let's start with top tier

[00:05:10] Necessary clothing

[00:05:12] For the winter season

[00:05:14] Things that I have to have

[00:05:15] Things that just make

[00:05:17] The biggest difference for me

[00:05:19] Right like knowing the basics

[00:05:21] Knowing and and I hope you know the basics

[00:05:24] That you should be layering and you know doing all those things

[00:05:28] Base layers when it gets really cold

[00:05:29] Good wool socks

[00:05:31] Oh good wool socks I don't have on here

[00:05:33] Good wool socks is essential

[00:05:34] I got a list in front of me

[00:05:38] Where it all begins for me

[00:05:39] And one of the earliest things that I start to wear hats

[00:05:43] You know what I mean?

[00:05:44] I throw the hats on

[00:05:45] My favorite of course is the Ferg

[00:05:48] Handcrafted by our one and only host

[00:05:51] The phoenix survival the Ferg

[00:05:52] Which I don't have a Ferg

[00:05:53] I wasn't actually even planning on being

[00:05:56] Live

[00:05:58] I may go grab a Ferg

[00:05:59] Actually I have a red white and blue one

[00:06:01] Not far from here

[00:06:02] I may go grab that on commercial break

[00:06:04] And come back with the Ferg on

[00:06:06] Because the hat is the key

[00:06:09] Now the other big thing that's important to me

[00:06:12] This is why the Ferg is the best

[00:06:14] Is because the Ferg can be a hat

[00:06:16] And then it can open up and also protect the neck

[00:06:19] And for me when it gets cold cold

[00:06:21] That's one of the biggest difference makers

[00:06:23] Is the hat, the hands, and the neck

[00:06:27] If those areas are covered

[00:06:28] If those areas are covered

[00:06:29] Man I hold heat really good

[00:06:30] So scarf

[00:06:32] Something along those lines

[00:06:33] Another huge one for me

[00:06:35] Typically I go to the

[00:06:38] To the Shemag

[00:06:39] I don't use the traditional kind of scarf stuff

[00:06:41] I don't know

[00:06:43] I'm sure a good

[00:06:44] Yeah I don't know

[00:06:44] I just like that material

[00:06:46] You know

[00:06:47] When you start putting stuff around the neck

[00:06:49] You gotta be careful

[00:06:49] About what you do

[00:06:53] For me I gotta have

[00:06:55] A glove

[00:06:56] Well actually I use two gloves

[00:06:58] I buy the cheap gloves

[00:06:59] Like the $7 pack of black gloves

[00:07:04] And they stay in my bag all the time

[00:07:07] They stay in my EDC bag for whatever

[00:07:10] You know

[00:07:11] Sometimes it's not even me

[00:07:12] Sometimes it's my kids

[00:07:13] Like they get cold

[00:07:14] They can't warm up

[00:07:15] Here put the gloves on

[00:07:16] Sometimes it's my white

[00:07:17] Whatever

[00:07:17] I like to have that pair of gloves

[00:07:19] But when it's time to really deal with cold

[00:07:22] Like when we did

[00:07:24] Gotham Get Out in February last year

[00:07:26] I have the Thinsulate double layer gloves

[00:07:29] That to me

[00:07:30] I mean

[00:07:33] Why the Thinsulate is so important

[00:07:35] Or why a two layer glove is so important

[00:07:37] Is because I wanna be able to

[00:07:40] Oh sweet

[00:07:42] I wanna be able to

[00:07:45] Touch things

[00:07:46] That are cold and wet

[00:07:48] And have it

[00:07:49] Have my fingers inside the glove protected

[00:07:51] Like I know I can't go swimming with them on

[00:07:53] But

[00:07:55] I gotta have a good Thinsulate glove

[00:07:57] That's key

[00:07:58] To top tier winter preps

[00:08:01] For me

[00:08:04] What do we do next?

[00:08:06] Heat?

[00:08:07] We could talk heat

[00:08:09] Home heating

[00:08:11] Firewood

[00:08:12] Well I've got

[00:08:13] Let's do

[00:08:14] Let's do firewood

[00:08:15] And

[00:08:17] Fire

[00:08:18] Okay

[00:08:20] Now I know not everybody has

[00:08:21] Fire

[00:08:23] But we're talking about top tier fire preps for me

[00:08:26] If you don't have what I have

[00:08:27] It just is what it is

[00:08:28] All I can give you is my experience

[00:08:29] My recommendations, right?

[00:08:31] So

[00:08:33] Anybody who manages firewood

[00:08:35] Has a fireplace knows that that process starts

[00:08:38] Early in the season

[00:08:39] The chopping

[00:08:40] You know the curing

[00:08:41] The whole thing

[00:08:42] But I still like to have a ready

[00:08:45] Chainsaw

[00:08:47] Sharpened

[00:08:48] You know fueled up oiled up

[00:08:49] The whole thing ready to go

[00:08:51] Even in the winter

[00:08:52] Trees still come down

[00:08:55] Firewood runs out

[00:08:56] Those kinds of things happen

[00:08:57] And

[00:08:59] You know just being able to deal with

[00:09:01] Something like that

[00:09:02] And being able to create firewood on the fly

[00:09:05] Opportunities come too

[00:09:07] You know sometimes opportunities come

[00:09:09] And if you have a chainsaw you can take advantage of them

[00:09:12] If you have a good axe

[00:09:13] You know a real axe

[00:09:15] A real splitting axe

[00:09:17] Not a maul but a real splitting axe

[00:09:19] Long

[00:09:20] I don't know what mine is

[00:09:22] Probably 30 plus

[00:09:24] Close to 40 inch

[00:09:25] Something like that

[00:09:28] Essential

[00:09:29] Essential

[00:09:29] Sometimes a tree comes down in the neighbor's yard

[00:09:32] And the neighbor says

[00:09:33] What in the world am I going to do with this tree?

[00:09:37] It's February

[00:09:38] I don't feel like going out there and doing it

[00:09:39] I don't want to deal with it

[00:09:41] Whatever the situation is

[00:09:42] You have a chainsaw

[00:09:43] An axe

[00:09:45] When I look and see fallen trees

[00:09:47] That's what I see

[00:09:48] I see firewood

[00:09:48] I go okay cool

[00:09:50] You know and we could take advantage of that

[00:09:52] But if you're going to deal with fire

[00:09:55] Fire in fireplace

[00:09:56] Making fires in the fireplace

[00:09:59] Collecting kindling obviously is essential

[00:10:01] I live in a very wooded neighborhood

[00:10:05] So there's always kindling around

[00:10:08] The other essential is

[00:10:10] Something we make here at our house called Bigfoot fur

[00:10:13] And Bigfoot fur is

[00:10:15] Absolutely

[00:10:17] The easiest and cheapest fire starter there is

[00:10:22] So Bigfoot fur

[00:10:24] Is basically

[00:10:26] Dryer lint and wax

[00:10:28] Used wax

[00:10:30] I don't know if you have like diffusers

[00:10:32] Or wax melters

[00:10:36] Scentsy

[00:10:37] Pink Zebra

[00:10:38] Those kind of companies

[00:10:39] They do scented wax

[00:10:41] The wax

[00:10:43] We do it in our house

[00:10:44] This is why I take such

[00:10:46] Advantage of this

[00:10:47] The scented wax loses its scent

[00:10:50] It's trash

[00:10:50] My wife puts it in a mason jar for me

[00:10:53] I put that mason jar in

[00:10:56] Simmering water

[00:10:57] Directly

[00:10:58] Like in a pot

[00:11:00] If you're patient

[00:11:03] Don't do it quick

[00:11:03] Because you'll blow up the mason jar

[00:11:05] You can explode the mason jar

[00:11:06] I've done it before

[00:11:07] And then you have not just glass

[00:11:09] But then you have hot wax

[00:11:10] All over everything too

[00:11:11] And that's great

[00:11:12] Because it's going to harden

[00:11:13] You know

[00:11:15] So you take the hot wax

[00:11:17] And if you want to make this stuff

[00:11:18] You can just buy wax and do it

[00:11:19] You know, you don't have to

[00:11:20] Do it the way I do it

[00:11:22] This, we, I just decided to take a byproduct

[00:11:24] Of how we do things at our house

[00:11:26] And turn it into something valuable

[00:11:27] We mix up

[00:11:29] Literally keep a

[00:11:30] A giant ziplock bag

[00:11:31] It's like

[00:11:33] It's bigger than

[00:11:34] Probably about like

[00:11:36] Probably about like yay

[00:11:37] And we take that ziplock bag

[00:11:39] And all the dryer lint goes in there

[00:11:42] Every, after drying clothes

[00:11:44] Right? Boom, boom, boom

[00:11:46] Then stir in the wax

[00:11:47] You gotta have rubber gloves

[00:11:49] When you're making bigfoot fur

[00:11:51] You might even want to donate

[00:11:52] Like a wood dowel to the process

[00:11:54] I stir the wax

[00:11:55] Which is not hot enough to melt the ziplock bag

[00:11:58] Right in the bag, boom, stir it in

[00:12:00] And then you can go with that

[00:12:03] Like you can make little balls

[00:12:06] You can stuff them in egg cartons

[00:12:10] Sometimes, at least when I have a lot of it

[00:12:12] I'll take like an old coffee can

[00:12:14] Or plastic coffee container

[00:12:16] And just pack it with the bigfoot fur

[00:12:18] And that I use outside typically

[00:12:21] So I'll slice discs off of that

[00:12:23] Right? I'll like, I'll cut away the plastic

[00:12:25] Or pull it out of the container

[00:12:26] And then cut discs and then light them

[00:12:29] And you got fire

[00:12:30] If you know how to build a fire

[00:12:32] But bigfoot fur is essential

[00:12:34] The way that we do it

[00:12:35] We put those little wax cups

[00:12:37] That you put ketchup in

[00:12:38] I don't even know if they have them

[00:12:40] Like, Wendy's I think still does it

[00:12:42] But you know the old wax cup

[00:12:44] You can get a thousand of them

[00:12:47] On Amazon for like ten bucks

[00:12:49] Or something crazy

[00:12:51] Stuff the bigfoot fur in the wax cup

[00:12:54] Pour a little bit of wax over the whole thing

[00:12:56] If you have extra, it's nice to have like a coating

[00:12:58] Of wax on it

[00:12:59] And I put them in ziplocks

[00:13:01] They go in all the bags

[00:13:02] They go in the camping bags

[00:13:03] The hunting bags

[00:13:05] The get home bags

[00:13:06] The bug out bags

[00:13:07] Everything

[00:13:07] Gets a little ziplock of you know

[00:13:09] Ten or so bigfoot fur cups

[00:13:14] And they burn

[00:13:15] I mean my son and I clocked them

[00:13:17] When we first made them like 13 to 15 minutes

[00:13:19] They'll burn

[00:13:20] A little wax cup

[00:13:21] You know, so if you did something bigger

[00:13:23] You'd get even more time

[00:13:24] So these are the essentials for me

[00:13:26] When it comes to fire starting

[00:13:28] Very important

[00:13:29] Got to have my bigfoot fur

[00:13:30] Got to be able to process wood

[00:13:32] Because I want to burn

[00:13:33] Like tonight

[00:13:35] I'll have a fire

[00:13:36] It's going to be cold tonight

[00:13:37] It's going to be cold tomorrow

[00:13:38] I'll have a fire

[00:13:40] It's as aesthetically pleasing

[00:13:42] As it is helpful

[00:13:43] You know

[00:13:45] Let's talk about home stuff

[00:13:46] We will get into home heating

[00:13:51] I want to talk kind of home maintenance stuff

[00:13:53] That I do

[00:13:54] That I think is important

[00:13:55] Right?

[00:13:57] Obviously tuning up your current system

[00:13:59] We're on a

[00:14:04] We keep our systems

[00:14:08] Seasonally tuned up

[00:14:09] With a company

[00:14:10] You know, we pay for it

[00:14:12] Throughout the year

[00:14:13] To make that happen

[00:14:14] And I think that's done a world of good for us

[00:14:17] Really

[00:14:18] And it's affordable

[00:14:18] It's like less than 200 bucks

[00:14:20] Or something for the year

[00:14:21] And you get these seasonal tune ups

[00:14:23] But you know

[00:14:23] The changing of filters

[00:14:25] For your heating system

[00:14:26] This stuff

[00:14:27] Makes a huge difference

[00:14:29] Short term, long term

[00:14:31] Efficiency

[00:14:31] The whole thing

[00:14:33] They have a really great insulation

[00:14:35] That drills into

[00:14:38] You basically drill it into your door frame

[00:14:41] On the outside of the door

[00:14:44] It's a rubber strip

[00:14:45] It's not necessarily an insulation

[00:14:47] It's a strip

[00:14:47] Weather strip

[00:14:48] Fundamentally

[00:14:49] And it's strong

[00:14:51] It's durable

[00:14:52] And it's super effective

[00:14:55] And like I said

[00:14:56] My plan is to take the transcript of this

[00:14:59] And turn it into an article

[00:15:00] I'll link to that there

[00:15:01] It's too many products to link to everything

[00:15:04] But it's basically a weather strip

[00:15:06] With a plastic edge

[00:15:08] Tubular plastic edge

[00:15:09] On one side

[00:15:10] With screw holes

[00:15:12] And you can take it

[00:15:13] Butt it up to your door

[00:15:14] Screw it into the door frame

[00:15:16] And if you have those doors

[00:15:17] That lead directly to the outside

[00:15:19] Or you just have those doors

[00:15:20] That just you know

[00:15:20] You put your hand up top

[00:15:22] And you're like wow

[00:15:22] Okay

[00:15:23] I don't know if we need a door here or not

[00:15:25] It's kind of pointless

[00:15:27] That's a good one, right?

[00:15:29] Fireplace inspection

[00:15:30] Huge

[00:15:31] Don't kill yourself and your family

[00:15:33] Right?

[00:15:36] Like I said

[00:15:37] These things matter to us

[00:15:38] So the fireplace stays hooked up

[00:15:40] The fireplace is always on the up and up

[00:15:44] Because of that

[00:15:45] You know what I mean?

[00:15:46] We want it to be...

[00:15:47] I want to have the freedom to wake up and burn firewood

[00:15:50] Whenever the hell I want

[00:15:52] So...

[00:15:53] We fortify against old man winter

[00:15:56] Let's talk now

[00:15:59] About home heat

[00:16:01] Home heat's a big one

[00:16:03] You know what I mean?

[00:16:04] Home heat's one of those ones where

[00:16:05] It goes back to kind of what we were talking about last night

[00:16:08] With the water pumps, right?

[00:16:10] We were talking about well water pumps

[00:16:12] We were talking about backup power

[00:16:14] We were talking about the flow jack

[00:16:16] We were talking about different off-grid methods

[00:16:20] Same thing with heat

[00:16:21] You know?

[00:16:22] Yeah, you've got a heat pump system

[00:16:24] You've got an oil heater

[00:16:25] Whatever it is your main...

[00:16:27] You know, whatever it is your main heating system is

[00:16:31] You got that

[00:16:32] And then you need some backups

[00:16:34] Right?

[00:16:34] You need some backups

[00:16:37] I found two years ago

[00:16:40] That electric heaters

[00:16:41] They're expensive to run

[00:16:43] But they are incredibly effective

[00:16:45] You know?

[00:16:46] And that's been really cool

[00:16:48] That's been really pretty cool to see

[00:16:50] Because they're new to me

[00:16:52] I didn't do a lot with electric heaters in the past

[00:16:54] Great for like single room

[00:16:57] What I will say is

[00:16:59] If you rely solely on electric heat

[00:17:03] When your heat system goes out

[00:17:05] If it's due to a power outage

[00:17:07] And you're depending on some kind of backup power

[00:17:09] Solar generator

[00:17:11] It's going to kill that solar generator

[00:17:13] I tested it last year

[00:17:14] Just out of sheer curiosity

[00:17:16] I turned the heat way down

[00:17:17] And I said

[00:17:18] How long could this 3000 watt solar generator

[00:17:21] That I have from 0.0 energy

[00:17:24] Power this heater

[00:17:25] And keep me warm

[00:17:26] And it was...

[00:17:27] It wasn't long

[00:17:28] You know?

[00:17:29] It was about 5 hours before it got dangerously low

[00:17:31] It was a low light day outside

[00:17:34] So we weren't even getting that good of a charge

[00:17:37] It wouldn't be a long term solution for that

[00:17:39] Now, gas generator

[00:17:41] Powerful 5000 watt gas generator

[00:17:44] Different story

[00:17:45] You know what I mean?

[00:17:46] Very different story

[00:17:48] Also, you know

[00:17:50] Smaller space

[00:17:51] Jay Fergie says in chat

[00:17:54] Kerosene heater

[00:17:56] For backup heat

[00:17:57] Huge

[00:17:58] I mean it's one of my favorites

[00:18:00] The K1 is a clean burning

[00:18:03] It still has a little bit of that kerosene smell to it

[00:18:05] If you burn it in the house a while

[00:18:08] But you're not going to care about that

[00:18:10] You know what I mean?

[00:18:10] If you're cold

[00:18:11] You're not going to care about that

[00:18:12] You got to keep windows propped

[00:18:14] When you're using kerosene

[00:18:15] When you're using propane

[00:18:16] You know the buddy heater

[00:18:18] The propane buddy heaters are also really great

[00:18:22] Not something you want to burn like overnight

[00:18:26] While you're sleeping all windows closed

[00:18:28] And all that kind of stuff

[00:18:29] You could kill everyone in the house

[00:18:32] Don't kill everyone in the house

[00:18:35] Maybe shiver

[00:18:36] No, but the

[00:18:37] If you can ventilate

[00:18:39] The kerosene heater can be amazing

[00:18:43] These are the essentials

[00:18:45] These are the top tier winter preps that I call on

[00:18:48] You know the electric heaters with the gas generator

[00:18:50] I've used them in power outages

[00:18:52] They work

[00:18:52] They also make these really cool electric heaters

[00:18:57] That are like radiators

[00:18:58] They look just like a radiator

[00:19:00] Like a little section of radiator

[00:19:02] They're amazing

[00:19:03] I mean they crank heat into a room

[00:19:06] This is not a whole house thing, right?

[00:19:08] You get into a long term power outage in the cold

[00:19:11] You get everybody into a single room

[00:19:14] And that room gets blocked off

[00:19:15] Curtains, whatever

[00:19:16] And that room becomes what you focus on heating

[00:19:20] You know what I mean?

[00:19:21] If it's a long term winter power outage

[00:19:23] Instead of saying

[00:19:24] We need heaters all over the house

[00:19:26] You know, it's never going to work for you

[00:19:30] How about some homestead

[00:19:32] Homestead

[00:19:34] Homesteading winter solutions

[00:19:37] Right?

[00:19:37] Homesteading winter essentials

[00:19:40] I used to heat my chickens

[00:19:42] I used to put a heat lamp in the chicken coop over the winter

[00:19:48] Dave Jones told me that was silly

[00:19:52] I did not do it last year

[00:19:54] And in all honesty, I didn't see any change in egg production last year

[00:19:58] So I don't know how much they really care about the heater

[00:20:01] You know, they

[00:20:03] I have a small chicken coop

[00:20:05] And the chickens huddle up inside it

[00:20:07] They spend very little time in it

[00:20:09] Other than night time

[00:20:11] But heat for animals could be essential

[00:20:14] Depending on where you live

[00:20:15] You know, that kind of thing

[00:20:17] When it comes to birds and stuff like that

[00:20:20] I do think that those black bulb heat lamps

[00:20:22] Do a really good job

[00:20:25] Insulation of your barns

[00:20:27] And those kinds of things

[00:20:28] That's an essential

[00:20:30] If you're a goat keeper

[00:20:32] For me, it's less about insulation of a chicken coop

[00:20:36] And more about sort of having the bedding

[00:20:38] To give them the ability to deeply bed

[00:20:42] Right? Deep bedding is kind of the way that they keep warm

[00:20:44] They share their body heat

[00:20:46] They trap their body heat with their feathers

[00:20:48] They huddle together

[00:20:49] They share that body heat

[00:20:50] And the deep bedding allows them to kind of hold on to it

[00:20:53] And they're going to put down there at the bottom also

[00:20:55] Big one, right?

[00:20:57] It's also a time

[00:20:59] For tarping gardens

[00:21:02] I don't know if you guys cover your gardens over the winter or not

[00:21:05] The sun has a tremendous effect on the microbiology on your top soil

[00:21:11] In other words, you cover it

[00:21:13] Like I cover

[00:21:14] I fill mine with half broken down compost

[00:21:17] And then I cover it

[00:21:19] With tarps

[00:21:20] My beds with tarps

[00:21:24] And that protects

[00:21:25] It creates this environment where decomposition is happening

[00:21:28] Right?

[00:21:29] It covers it and protects it from the UV rays of the sun

[00:21:33] So you're not killing off the good stuff

[00:21:34] And then next year, you know

[00:21:36] Remove the tarp and it's good to go

[00:21:39] This is an easy one

[00:21:40] Simple

[00:21:40] You know, not really a tough thing to do

[00:21:43] A couple tarps

[00:21:44] You should have tarps already

[00:21:46] If you don't have tarps

[00:21:46] You're missing a key element of preparedness

[00:21:50] Young tree protection

[00:21:52] That's a big one

[00:21:53] If you're planting small trees

[00:21:55] Fruit trees

[00:21:56] You're getting into the fruit tree thing

[00:21:58] And you have wildlife

[00:21:59] Particularly rabbits

[00:22:01] Man, they will eat

[00:22:02] They will eat your tree

[00:22:04] They'll eat the little baby trees

[00:22:06] The little dwarfs

[00:22:08] That are coming up

[00:22:08] They'll tear them things apart

[00:22:10] And then

[00:22:11] You'll

[00:22:12] You know, you'll lose

[00:22:13] If you buy trees offline

[00:22:15] You could lose $65

[00:22:16] You could lose $100

[00:22:18] On some of these trees I see

[00:22:20] All to one little rabbit

[00:22:22] Who wanted to eat the bark off your pear tree

[00:22:24] You know what I mean?

[00:22:26] I take that very simple

[00:22:29] It's called cattle fencing

[00:22:30] Or something like that

[00:22:31] I think that's what it's called

[00:22:33] It's sort of the rectangular hold fence

[00:22:37] Wrap that around the base of the trees

[00:22:39] I do that from the time I plant them

[00:22:41] As bare root fruit trees

[00:22:43] But that's a fortification to consider

[00:22:45] The reason it's important in the winter

[00:22:46] Is because things...

[00:22:48] There's not a lot to eat

[00:22:49] So where a rabbit might look at your tree

[00:22:52] In the summertime and go

[00:22:53] You know, there's a lot of choice here

[00:22:55] I don't think I'm ready for bark yet

[00:22:57] In the winter that could change

[00:22:58] You know?

[00:23:00] What else folks?

[00:23:02] What else we got?

[00:23:05] We'll do a quick commercial break

[00:23:08] And...

[00:23:10] We'll get into...

[00:23:13] Wait, did I do everything?

[00:23:14] Oh, we'll get into food

[00:23:15] Food essentials, cooking essentials

[00:23:17] That kind of stuff

[00:23:19] And then I got a video for you

[00:23:21] A video product to check out

[00:23:23] Also...

[00:23:24] I just realized we can watch the videos

[00:23:25] Here on StreamYard

[00:23:28] That's...

[00:23:29] We may need to do that

[00:23:32] I guess you guys can hear a video through here

[00:23:34] That would make sense

[00:23:36] Yeah, we can watch video here

[00:23:38] Now together

[00:23:39] That's fun

[00:23:40] Alright, so...

[00:23:42] We are...

[00:23:44] Gonna do a quick commercial break

[00:23:45] I'll be right back with a Ferg

[00:23:47] And I'll be right back with...

[00:23:50] Some essentials in the kitchen

[00:23:52] And things along those lines

[00:23:54] For...

[00:23:55] Top tier winter preps

[00:23:56] On today's PBN News

[00:23:58] Alright, a little break from the politics

[00:23:59] A little break from the media

[00:24:00] Such...

[00:24:42] The Ferg

[00:24:43] This is the perfect Ferg for this season too

[00:24:46] America reigns once again

[00:24:48] The communists have been sunk

[00:24:52] Well...

[00:24:53] Now their lunatics are out amongst us

[00:24:56] Arkham...

[00:24:58] Arkham Asylum has been emptied out upon us

[00:25:02] So take a look at the Ferg

[00:25:03] It's an awesome item

[00:25:05] This is the one I'm wearing too this year

[00:25:07] I'm glad I went and grabbed this

[00:25:10] So you see the top

[00:25:12] Has this

[00:25:14] Open top, right?

[00:25:15] And it's got these two strings

[00:25:16] Which I really like hanging off the top of it myself

[00:25:20] And you could tighten that thing down

[00:25:22] You could double knot it

[00:25:23] You can put it up in a bow

[00:25:24] If you want it to look cute

[00:25:27] You know...

[00:25:27] I don't get a lot of credit for cute looks around here

[00:25:30] With two boys and a wife

[00:25:34] But you know, I like that look

[00:25:36] That's kind of a cool nap time look

[00:25:38] You can fold it up and get this guy going

[00:25:40] Which is probably how I'm gonna rock it right now

[00:25:44] But...

[00:25:45] The way the Ferg excels

[00:25:48] The way the Ferg excels when it really gets cold

[00:25:51] You know...

[00:25:52] You untie this guy

[00:25:55] I mean, I've gone out of the house with more than one of these on

[00:25:58] Because of this

[00:26:01] Now...

[00:26:02] When I got mine in 2020

[00:26:03] We also used to do this number

[00:26:07] When we had to run in and get a hot dog from 7-Eleven

[00:26:10] You know what I mean?

[00:26:11] And this is about as effective

[00:26:13] This crocheted hat

[00:26:15] Is about as effective as your masks were

[00:26:17] All through COVID

[00:26:19] But anyway, this thing comes...

[00:26:21] Look...

[00:26:22] You see what I mean?

[00:26:23] Now, this coat on top

[00:26:26] Ferg on top

[00:26:28] You can't buy these at Amazon by the way

[00:26:31] You're not gonna find a Ferg at Amazon

[00:26:32] You gotta...

[00:26:33] You got to...

[00:26:34] Reach out to Jay Ferg at Phoenix Survival

[00:26:40] Oh, I hope it didn't freeze, Jay Ferg

[00:26:42] I'm doing a whole skit here

[00:26:43] On your hat

[00:26:47] No, I don't think it froze

[00:26:49] Somebody let me know in chat

[00:26:51] If I gotta start my Ferg over again

[00:26:56] Anyhow...

[00:26:56] I'd have a hard time believing it froze

[00:26:58] We've got some serious...

[00:27:00] Horsepower flowing into this thing right now

[00:27:03] But...

[00:27:03] Anyhow...

[00:27:04] So, the Ferg, man...

[00:27:05] Any essential

[00:27:07] The other thing...

[00:27:08] We're gonna talk about food

[00:27:09] And managing a kitchen

[00:27:11] And...

[00:27:12] Stuff along those lines, you know?

[00:27:15] Winter essentials on that end

[00:27:18] I don't know what's going on

[00:27:19] Let's take a look over

[00:27:20] I think the nukes are going off

[00:27:21] Based on...

[00:27:23] Oh, no, okay

[00:27:23] This is work stuff

[00:27:26] Oh, I got an offer too

[00:27:27] Right on

[00:27:27] Wonderful

[00:27:29] Anyway...

[00:27:31] So...

[00:27:34] Kitchen...

[00:27:35] Essentials...

[00:27:37] Winter...

[00:27:38] Allspice cinnamon clove...

[00:27:41] Chinese five spice...

[00:27:44] Nutmeg...

[00:27:45] It's not about keeping warm

[00:27:46] But it is about keeping warm

[00:27:47] When you think about it, right?

[00:27:49] These things gotta be in the spice cabinet for me

[00:27:52] Because...

[00:27:53] When it's winter...

[00:27:55] When it's cold...

[00:27:55] It doesn't have to be winter...

[00:27:56] It can be fall...

[00:27:57] Right now we're doing our...

[00:27:59] Our Daily Bread Challenge

[00:28:01] The Our Daily Bread Challenge is basically

[00:28:04] Putting it in the back of your head

[00:28:05] To bake some bread today

[00:28:07] Bake something

[00:28:08] Just get to baking, right?

[00:28:10] Focus on the bread

[00:28:11] Because baking bread is fun

[00:28:13] It's rewarding

[00:28:14] And it's a skill that you should really hone in

[00:28:16] Preppers don't often put value in cooking from scratch

[00:28:20] It's not one of those skills

[00:28:21] They put a lot of value in

[00:28:22] The cost of things is starting to change

[00:28:25] So the challenge is to bake some bread every day

[00:28:31] Cracker...

[00:28:31] I've seen crackers

[00:28:32] I've seen hot dogs wrapped in bread

[00:28:34] I made some cinnamon buns

[00:28:36] Some focaccia myself

[00:28:37] Some rolls

[00:28:39] What else?

[00:28:39] I don't know

[00:28:40] Everybody's doing great

[00:28:41] Thank you guys for sharing

[00:28:44] It's a cool...

[00:28:45] It's a fun little challenge

[00:28:46] You know what I mean?

[00:28:46] There's no first prize

[00:28:48] Nobody's winning anything

[00:28:49] It's just honing that skill

[00:28:50] You have all the way up until Thanksgiving to participate

[00:28:55] And you know, it can be sweet bread

[00:28:56] It can be savory

[00:28:57] It can be quick bread

[00:28:58] It can be yeast risen

[00:28:59] Whatever...

[00:29:00] All that kind of stuff

[00:29:02] Get into it, man

[00:29:03] Get into the kitchen and cook

[00:29:05] But when it's winter

[00:29:06] One of the things that you can do

[00:29:08] To help the heating system

[00:29:09] Is turn the oven on

[00:29:12] Like...

[00:29:13] Bake...

[00:29:13] Put something in the oven

[00:29:15] Put a roast in the oven

[00:29:16] Put a leg of lamb in the oven

[00:29:18] You know what I mean?

[00:29:19] Bake a loaf of bread

[00:29:21] That kind of thing

[00:29:21] Bake cookies

[00:29:22] Whatever...

[00:29:23] Who cares?

[00:29:24] You know what I mean?

[00:29:25] Get out there, turn the oven on

[00:29:26] Then you got 350 degrees

[00:29:27] Pouring into the kitchen

[00:29:29] Keeping you warm in there too

[00:29:31] You know, if you've got a wood stove

[00:29:33] Fire it up

[00:29:34] That kind of thing

[00:29:36] So...

[00:29:38] Those cooking essentials

[00:29:39] Are a big deal for me

[00:29:41] Because I want to be able

[00:29:42] To reach in there

[00:29:43] Maybe molasses is a big one too

[00:29:45] I want to be able to reach in there

[00:29:46] And grab things like that

[00:29:48] And say, you know

[00:29:49] We can do this

[00:29:51] We can bake something

[00:29:52] That's going to be delicious

[00:29:53] It's going to fit the season

[00:29:54] It's going to have that sort of spicy take

[00:29:57] Be awesome

[00:30:00] Another essential for me

[00:30:02] Are these

[00:30:04] These are essential

[00:30:06] To me

[00:30:09] I like coffee mugs, man

[00:30:10] I like seasonal coffee mugs

[00:30:13] Because I like...

[00:30:14] More important than the seasonal coffee mug

[00:30:16] Is the hot beverage

[00:30:18] The hot beverage in winter

[00:30:20] Is so overlooked

[00:30:21] You know what I mean?

[00:30:23] You wake up in the morning

[00:30:24] The hot coffee

[00:30:25] Are you kidding me?

[00:30:27] The hot...

[00:30:27] Or in the evening

[00:30:28] The hot coffee

[00:30:29] It's been cold

[00:30:30] You've been cold out all day

[00:30:31] The hot coffee

[00:30:33] Oh man

[00:30:34] The hot tea

[00:30:35] The hot chocolate

[00:30:37] You know, if you're in a survival situation

[00:30:40] And uh...

[00:30:41] It's a cold one

[00:30:42] Like drink the water hot

[00:30:45] You gotta boil it anyway

[00:30:46] Right?

[00:30:47] If you're melting snow

[00:30:48] If you're sourcing it from a creek

[00:30:49] You're filtering it

[00:30:50] You're boiling it anyway

[00:30:51] To make sure it's safe I hope

[00:30:52] And you drink it hot

[00:30:54] I'm reminded of a...

[00:30:57] I'm reminded of a...

[00:30:59] I'm reminded of a...

[00:31:01] Oh, that's a good tip, Jay Ferg

[00:31:03] I'm gonna put that in there

[00:31:04] I'm reminded of a hike I took with my son

[00:31:06] My oldest

[00:31:07] He was much younger

[00:31:09] We were gonna go hike in the mountains

[00:31:12] And I didn't realize the mountains had been totally frozen over

[00:31:16] Snowed on and everything

[00:31:18] So we get there

[00:31:19] And we're taking a walk

[00:31:21] Through the woods up there in the Shenandoah

[00:31:23] And it's getting cold

[00:31:25] And we're getting wet

[00:31:26] And freezing

[00:31:27] And so on

[00:31:28] And eventually I said

[00:31:30] Alright, look

[00:31:31] We're gonna head back

[00:31:32] But before we do

[00:31:32] We're gonna go over here

[00:31:34] We're gonna hit the jet boil

[00:31:36] We're gonna warm up some water

[00:31:38] We're gonna make some tea

[00:31:39] You know what I mean?

[00:31:40] And my son who...

[00:31:42] I don't know if I could pay him to drink a cup of tea

[00:31:46] He took that warm

[00:31:49] Titanium cup in his hands

[00:31:50] And he sat there and he drank that tea

[00:31:54] And he got warm

[00:31:56] And then we hiked our way back

[00:31:58] And...

[00:31:58] You know?

[00:32:01] This is what it's all

[00:32:03] It's not as complicated as you think

[00:32:06] Right?

[00:32:06] Not as complicated as you think

[00:32:09] Now what I have for you today

[00:32:11] To round this thing out

[00:32:14] Is...

[00:32:15] New tech that I'm not that familiar with

[00:32:17] I don't have any...

[00:32:19] Well, now I do

[00:32:19] I've never played with heated clothing and stuff

[00:32:25] Sorry...

[00:32:25] Phone...

[00:32:26] I've never played with heated clothing and stuff

[00:32:29] Never...

[00:32:29] So...

[00:32:30] Hand warmers a little bit

[00:32:32] What I have linked down below is a video from L2Survive

[00:32:36] One of our great listeners

[00:32:37] L2Survive

[00:32:39] His YouTube channel

[00:32:40] Follow him

[00:32:41] He knows his stuff

[00:32:41] He does back to garden

[00:32:43] Back to Eden Gardening

[00:32:44] He does all kinds of great reviews

[00:32:46] And this is a link to hand warmers

[00:32:48] And he...

[00:32:48] He did a solid review on these hand warmers

[00:32:51] So check him out

[00:32:52] I got a coat with the...

[00:32:54] Heating stuff in it

[00:32:56] I haven't turned it on yet

[00:32:57] I haven't even tried it

[00:32:58] I'm gonna do it for a family gear episode for our members

[00:33:03] I really like it

[00:33:04] I mean I like the concept

[00:33:06] You know, I think it's great

[00:33:07] I think...

[00:33:08] Particularly important

[00:33:09] If you're gonna be...

[00:33:12] Stationary cold

[00:33:13] Like hunting

[00:33:14] That kind of thing

[00:33:15] Right?

[00:33:15] That's where I get cold

[00:33:16] Stationary

[00:33:17] If I can get up and move around

[00:33:18] I don't really get cold

[00:33:20] But stationary stuff can be a monster

[00:33:24] I wish I had it in Gotham Get Out

[00:33:25] I wouldn't have told anybody

[00:33:27] I wouldn't have told you Ben

[00:33:28] I wouldn't have told you Future Dan

[00:33:30] I'd have sat there in the cold

[00:33:32] Because we overnighted in the woods

[00:33:34] In February

[00:33:35] In Northern Virginia

[00:33:38] In our home...

[00:33:39] In our...

[00:33:40] I guess you could call it our covert homeless shelter

[00:33:45] We started fire with a bullet

[00:33:46] And a gunpowder

[00:33:48] But anyway...

[00:33:51] I'd have that...

[00:33:53] I could've had that coat on

[00:33:54] You guys would've never known any different

[00:33:55] Because it's just a black coat

[00:33:57] It's nice, it's cool

[00:33:59] But that could become something

[00:34:01] That could be a part of the thing

[00:34:02] It's something I want to explore this year

[00:34:05] USB charging capability

[00:34:07] Makes it just cake

[00:34:09] You know what I mean?

[00:34:10] To do this kind of stuff now

[00:34:11] You take a power bank

[00:34:13] You plug it into your coat

[00:34:14] And it heats the coat up

[00:34:15] It's that simple

[00:34:16] It doesn't have to be the one that comes with it

[00:34:18] And then of course you have a power bank in your coat

[00:34:20] So now you can charge your phone in the winter too

[00:34:23] Because what you may or may not know

[00:34:25] Is when your phone gets real cold

[00:34:26] Man, the battery just dies

[00:34:28] So...

[00:34:29] Something to consider

[00:34:31] Top tier winter preps

[00:34:32] PBN family

[00:34:34] The weather will get frightful

[00:34:37] And...

[00:34:37] From my experience

[00:34:38] You know...

[00:34:39] I grew up in a household

[00:34:40] Where we hated the winter

[00:34:42] And we just hated it

[00:34:44] There's nothing good about it

[00:34:45] That was the mentality in my house

[00:34:46] We couldn't go fishing anymore

[00:34:47] So we hated it

[00:34:49] Over the years

[00:34:50] Because of fireplaces

[00:34:52] And disaster coffee

[00:34:54] And coffee mugs

[00:34:56] And J Ferg

[00:34:57] And...

[00:34:58] You know...

[00:34:59] Great stuff like that

[00:35:01] You just come to appreciate the season a little more

[00:35:04] Because you're better prepared for it

[00:35:05] Right?

[00:35:08] I think that's about all I got today folks
