TGA-2024 Stay Behind Operations: what/how?

[00:00:00] Welcome to the Gunmetal Armory. Here's your host, Dane D.

[00:00:10] Well hello there everybody. This is Dane from the sometimes absent gunner of

[00:00:16] Armory. Hi everybody doing out there. How everybody's doing A.O.K.? It's been a

[00:00:23] little while. It's been a little while we've been getting the homestead ready for

[00:00:26] the spring. We've had a lot to do, a lot of things to fix, a lot of things to put

[00:00:34] back together, just a lot to do. If you have a place that you live and you

[00:00:40] have work, that you have to do on it constantly if you own your home you know

[00:00:44] almost exactly what I'm referring to. That being said, I didn't want you guys

[00:00:50] to think I had gone away completely. So I decided to touch base with you guys

[00:00:56] and maybe talk a little bit about stay behind operations. I will also be

[00:01:04] attempting to make it on to Sarah's show this weekend on Sunday for her

[00:01:10] the Changing Earth series. We're going to talk about team formations and team

[00:01:16] movement. So it's gonna be good, you know it's gonna be fun. You know I plan to be

[00:01:21] there. I plan to make it there so hopefully it works out exactly the way it's

[00:01:25] supposed to. But yeah, we do have a storm that is expected to be in our area on

[00:01:36] Sunday. So hopefully it doesn't affect anything as far as the internet and all

[00:01:44] that stuff go. If it does though, you know, we'll see if we can work around it.

[00:01:48] Okay? So just let you guys know I'll probably be on there. There is a likelihood

[00:01:53] that me and the wife will do a podcast this weekend as well. We'll see. Yeah, so

[00:02:01] that's that. I don't know if you all have been kind of paying attention to the

[00:02:06] news lately and what's going on in the world but yes it's still a crap show just

[00:02:11] in case you're wondering. You're like oh has it gotten better date? No no it's

[00:02:15] gotten much much worse. But you know it depends on your definition of worse. I

[00:02:23] guess some people out there might think it's better. I on the other hand do not

[00:02:28] but that's just me anyways. The last couple of times I've come on and talked

[00:02:35] you guys we've talked about how many how many enemy combatants could

[00:02:40] potentially be in the United States at this point. I don't know if you guys have

[00:02:45] ever seen Joe Rogan. I'm not like a huge Joe Rogan fan or anything. I've seen a

[00:02:49] few clips of his show but he had a forget who he had on there with somebody who

[00:02:57] was a famous you know someone who operated I don't know if steel or green

[00:03:03] bra or something like that someone someone who understands the way that you

[00:03:07] know combat warfare is fought and this guy told Joe Rogan that all it would

[00:03:13] take to bring America to its knees or any town America to its knees would be

[00:03:20] 10 highly trained guys. 10 guys it's all it takes to bring any or a city right

[00:03:27] that's what he said to bring any city to its knees. 10 highly trained guys

[00:03:33] okay and you don't even have to be that highly trained that's the scary part

[00:03:37] okay if you know what it takes to shut down a city. 10's really all you need

[00:03:49] that's the scariest freaking thing to think about. The problem is I don't think

[00:03:56] anybody that's in charge is taking it seriously enough. I really don't because

[00:04:02] how do you not know or not realize what's going on out there right now. You

[00:04:11] know anyways I'm not gonna get into it because yeah I'll go down a rabbit hole

[00:04:18] and you know there's no point right now I want to get into the the reason I'm

[00:04:24] doing this show so I titled the show stay behind operations what slash how okay

[00:04:31] so what is the stay behind operation how are they conducted what exactly is

[00:04:37] the point of it you know so on and so forth right. It's good to know all these

[00:04:42] things it's good to kind of have an idea of what we're looking at okay when it

[00:04:48] comes to stay behind operations one of the biggest things that you might run

[00:04:53] into is history on stay behind operations from World War II I don't know if you

[00:05:00] guys know anything about this stuff but there were plans by Great Britain

[00:05:06] and pretty much every other country for stay behind operations.

[00:05:18] Germany also had stay behind operations plans they had specific soldiers they

[00:05:24] were going to use I believe they called them werewolves you know the German word

[00:05:29] for werewolves you know who anyways that was their thing. Great Britain had

[00:05:38] the civil guard that they were going to leave behind to kick butt and wreak havoc

[00:05:45] on the Germans when they when they finally invaded Great Britain which never

[00:05:50] happened but you know that was their plan they have the civil guard and those

[00:05:55] guys were highly trained you know really knew what they were doing. There was

[00:06:01] also even back in history there was other options like this and then there

[00:06:06] was various campaigns that military leaders would undertake I'm sure everyone's

[00:06:13] ever everyone out there has heard of the scorched earth tactics right everybody knows

[00:06:18] the scorched earth is right salt the earth meaning don't make it usable again okay now there

[00:06:27] is something to be said for you know making it to where various different places are still

[00:06:36] usable or not usable okay that is kind of a discussion for another time whether you're

[00:06:43] going to make a place completely unusable or not but it does be who

[00:06:49] us to understand what stay behind operations are and how those work if for no other reason

[00:06:59] than to understand just the doctrine itself okay so what is a stay behind operation I mean I kind

[00:07:08] of gave you a basic description of it but in a basic format the military format of it right stay

[00:07:19] behind operations can they could be used as a part of a defensive operation or a retrograde operation

[00:07:26] okay they say that in these operations the commander leaves a unit in their position to conduct a

[00:07:34] specified mission while the remainder of the force withdraws you guys remember done Kirk you know

[00:07:43] there was stay behind there were there was a specific group of people set or soldiers set to stay

[00:07:49] behind and cover the withdrawal okay they'll they'll you know it depends on what they're set

[00:07:59] there to do but stay behind is very risky according to military doctrine it's a very risky operation

[00:08:09] resupply and casualty evacuation are difficult and sometimes impossible okay so you you have

[00:08:17] to know you know some people it's a suicide mission you know well maybe maybe it is you know

[00:08:23] just something to keep in mind there you know it could be very very difficult

[00:08:26] and then conducting stay behind operation places a premium on infantry leadership and initiative

[00:08:35] they say ultimately it terminates when the unit conducts a link up with attacking friendly forces

[00:08:41] or re-enters friendly lines so what does that mean that means that the stay behind operation

[00:08:49] ultimately is kind of relieved or rescued if you will when the enemy push it or the friendly forces

[00:08:57] push far enough up to link up with the stay behind force okay very very crazy stuff guys so look at

[00:09:07] Dunkirk and what happened there during the that World War Two period of time okay there's many many

[00:09:16] different kind of examples of how all this stuff worked there were multiple examples of stay behind

[00:09:25] operations that happened during the Cold War you know we we get out of Germany or we get out

[00:09:31] at what yeah we get out of Germany technically of course there's east and west Germany so you know

[00:09:39] spy versus spy kicks on and you got the whole thing going on after that right Cold War KGB

[00:09:47] TRU freaking you know CIA all that crazy spy stuff that those dudes do and all this crazy innovation

[00:09:57] ah you know got some interesting stuff that happens okay now there are according to military

[00:10:04] doctrine there are generally going to be two types of stay behind operations one is going to be

[00:10:10] deliberate and one is going to be unplanned personally I don't want to be part of the unplanned

[00:10:16] one like oh we left Dane behind crap you know well now he's on the stay behind operation good luck

[00:10:22] Dane right that's not really where I want to be okay that's not really my my choice there okay so

[00:10:29] an unplanned stay behind operation would be one where unit finds itself cut off from other

[00:10:35] friendly elements okay now the timing of that can be indefinite it does not you there's no set

[00:10:41] time frame and there's no set time frame that they may be cut off in that kind of operation the

[00:10:49] unit has no specific planning or targets and I most of the time they're going to have to rely on

[00:10:58] the assets that they have with them again resupply captain the e-back all that stuff it becomes

[00:11:05] exponentially more difficult when you're doing that kind of a stay behind operation or you're kind of

[00:11:14] I don't want to say forced into it but basically that's exactly what it is you're kind of forced into

[00:11:19] it because of the environment that you're in okay so there's the other part where the other type which

[00:11:30] I told you guys about and that is the deliberate stay behind operation now that is more like the

[00:11:37] one I was telling you about earlier that's more like the civil guard or the you know German werewolves

[00:11:44] and things like that okay that's a whole different can of worms there whole different can of worms

[00:11:56] whole different type of warfare people well similar types of warfare but different can of

[00:12:03] worms okay so deliberate stay behind operations military doctrine says that those are one in which

[00:12:13] a unit plans to operate in an enemy controlled area as a separate yet cohesive element for a certain

[00:12:24] amount of time or until a specified event occurs a good example of that if you want to read about

[00:12:32] it might be the French maquis okay French resistance during World War II those guys were set up to

[00:12:40] operate for a specific time and they were to continue to operate until a specific specific event occurred

[00:12:51] so what was the specific event allied forces liberate France right so specific events occurring

[00:13:01] okay a deliberate stay behind operation requires extensive planning they need squads sections and platoons

[00:13:10] they would generally conduct that type of operation as a part of a larger unit now that's not to say

[00:13:19] that a partisan force you know like the French maquis right French resistance couldn't do that that's

[00:13:26] not to say that the Norwegian resistance couldn't do that during those timeframes and I'd be willing to

[00:13:36] bet that during the Cold War and you know even now I'd be willing to bet that there are stay behind

[00:13:45] operations that go but go on constantly okay even here in the US if they get to the point where

[00:13:52] they're deporting people that are dangerous and things like that you don't think that there's going

[00:13:57] to be people left that are still very very dangerous there will be guarantee it and then when all the

[00:14:06] crap pops off people can start pointing fingers it's gonna be interesting I guess maybe

[00:14:14] might be the right word but all right so next thing planning right you've got what troop led

[00:14:21] procedures so troop led procedures apply to stay behind operations they say the planners need to

[00:14:29] pay strict attention to task organization reconnaissance and sustainment well let's think about that for

[00:14:35] a second task organization okay what tasks are your guys going to be organized to a cop

[00:14:44] accomplish all right um look sorry turning moving something here task organization okay the next

[00:14:52] thing will be sustainment sustainment is extremely important okay and of course reconnaissance recon

[00:15:01] understanding the environment you're in understanding what's around you understanding what

[00:15:06] the threats are what the advantages are which the resources are so on and so forth

[00:15:13] and then like I was saying before sustainment okay during World War II there was a

[00:15:22] a Norwegian special forces I don't know whatever you want to call them team that was

[00:15:29] operating in Norway right Norwegian and while the German had occupied

[00:15:36] Norway and the they had gone over and blew up a whole bunch of the heavy water plant

[00:15:45] that was making the heavy water that Hitler's guys needed to make the atomic bomb

[00:15:51] they had hit that heavy water plant and I think it was

[00:15:55] sculptor or some I can't remember the name of the place in Norway there okay they're making

[00:16:01] the heavy water as the heavy water plant and these guys retreated the nor the Norwegian team

[00:16:08] retreated into the Norwegian wilderness which was mountainous and um very wood very woodsy you know

[00:16:17] a foresty right but it was snowing at that time it's very very cold winter time okay

[00:16:25] okay now let's think about that for a second you got those guys adjusted that operation

[00:16:32] and they need to be thinking about task organization reconnaissance and sustainment

[00:16:39] one of the problems they had was sustainment they did pretty decent recon they knew what was around

[00:16:44] them they knew where they were going they knew what equipment they needed to get there

[00:16:47] they had skis and they had the cold weather gear they needed for the most part okay

[00:16:52] task organization they knew what each man needed to do and could do but their problem came in

[00:17:02] when they couldn't get any kind of resupply because of the weather and they didn't have any

[00:17:09] options for sustainment however after a certain period of time with no food or very minimal food

[00:17:20] I think they were melting snow and their little stove oven thing with the trigger they had there

[00:17:25] and the the cabin that they found and um I think they were using pine needles or something to get some

[00:17:33] kind of nourishment eventually one of them shot I believe it was a reindeer and they were able to eat

[00:17:42] okay but keep in mind those three things are absolutely paramount okay next thing task organization

[00:17:50] we're gonna dive into it each one okay task organization a stay behind unit includes

[00:17:57] only soldiers and equipment needed for the mission it provides its own logistics support and security

[00:18:02] and must be able to hide easily and move through restrictive terrain it must be able to hide

[00:18:09] easily and move through restrictive terrain that to me says you need a small group right

[00:18:17] next thing recon recon is the most important in stay behind operations reporting tasks and information

[00:18:26] requires requirements can include suitable sites for patrol bases high positions observe observation

[00:18:33] posts cachees water sources dismounted and mounted avenues of approach kill zones engagement areas

[00:18:39] and covered and concealed approach routes this unit may be required to collect intelligence on

[00:18:47] enemy forces around them exactly what I was just explaining to you guys from world war two right

[00:18:53] understanding the threats around you understanding who moves in and out of where

[00:18:59] some additional information there right knowing your avenues of approach knowing your egress and

[00:19:04] ingress right all these things matter next thing i talk about is logistics right because the stay behind

[00:19:11] unit will not be in physical contact with a supporting unit supplies rations ammo radio batteries water

[00:19:18] and medical supplies all have to be cash aid or if you want to go the other way cash they got to be

[00:19:24] cashed okay provisions for casualty and epw evacuation depend on company and battalion plans right

[00:19:33] all of that stuff matters guys you need to understand and have a plan in place for all of it

[00:19:42] and finally retirement retirement is a form of retrograde in which a force is not in contact

[00:19:51] with the enemy moves away from the enemy and so on retiring units organize to fight but do so

[00:20:00] only in self defense retirement to usually not at as risky as delays or withdrawals retiring units

[00:20:06] normally road march away from the enemy infantry platoon is participate in retirement as a part of

[00:20:12] their company and higher headquarters okay so stay behind operations guys this is important stuff

[00:20:23] if you can try to acquire various different information on how militaries around the world operate

[00:20:34] acquires much information as you can learn that information really commit it to heart

[00:20:42] and really start to understand what a good guy might be up against and what a bad guy might

[00:20:50] be able to understand to do to that good guy all right i hope all this stuff made sense to you guys

[00:20:57] it's just kind of something that's been uh kind of on my on my mind lately so if you guys have any

[00:21:04] questions feel free to uh hit me up ask me uh gunmetalarmory at gmail.com and uh next week or the next

[00:21:12] time i talk to you guys i think we're going to talk about um what was it uh less than lethal ammunition

[00:21:23] L-T-L less than lethal we're gonna talk about less than lethal ammunition and what

[00:21:30] and or if that stuff is even useful for anything okay so i hope each and every one you have a

[00:21:36] wonderful rest of your day take care god bless and again if you need me you're more than welcome to
