[00:01:17] So let's open up this week in prepping like we always do

[00:01:22] with a rule to live by.

[00:01:24] I put it into the good old Google random number generator

[00:01:27] and ended up coming back with number 2222.

[00:01:31] And you may have heard these stories before, but I love telling it.

[00:01:35] Rule 22, always fix a loose screw.

[00:01:40] Now, what does that mean?

[00:01:42] Well, you've probably heard the old-fashioned saying,

[00:01:47] an ounce of prevention is worth a pound to cure.

[00:01:49] Well, that is true.

[00:01:50] And it all goes back to when we bought our first house on the Bay of Fundy,

[00:01:55] and it was an old 130-year-old home.

[00:01:58] And Becky said, honey, do you notice that the hinge on the bathroom door

[00:02:04] is a little bit loose?

[00:02:06] And I said, yeah, I do.

[00:02:08] And so I left it at that, just ignored it.

[00:02:10] And then each day I would come home, and it would get progressively looser

[00:02:14] and looser and looser without really worrying about it or thinking about it

[00:02:18] until, you know, six months later, Becky reminded me again.

[00:02:21] And I said, honey, you don't have to remind me every six months.

[00:02:24] I'll get around to it until one day I come home from work,

[00:02:28] an excessively stressful day, come home, open the door,

[00:02:32] maybe a little harder than I should have,

[00:02:33] and the door come off in one of my hands.

[00:02:40] So one of my favorite, and I don't know how this got so low on my list, 22,

[00:02:45] but it's true.

[00:02:47] Always fix a loose screw.

[00:02:48] And really what that means is if you're walking around in your yard,

[00:02:51] if you're walking around your home, don't be like lazy ass Tim,

[00:02:54] because I still fall prey to this sometimes.

[00:02:57] Don't walk past it.

[00:02:58] Take two seconds to fix something.

[00:02:59] Take two seconds to lube something up so you don't end up wearing it apart.

[00:03:03] Take two seconds to put a little tape on something and secure it.

[00:03:06] Take two seconds to put a ratchet strap around a 14-foot package of jams

[00:03:14] that I had to haul across town today.

[00:03:15] And I did.

[00:03:16] I took two seconds, wrapped the ratchet strap around it once,

[00:03:19] cranked it down, and Bob's your uncle.

[00:04:30] And I hate to say it, but it's almost always the same drink of choice.

[00:04:33] It doesn't matter how many cocktails I imbibe, the one that I enjoy the most is still the old-fashioned old-fashioned.

[00:04:42] We got some Eagle Rare.

[00:04:44] I broke into the bottle that Byron sent me not too long ago.

[00:04:48] Eagle Rare, regular Angostura bitters, some French vanilla, or no, old-fashioned vanilla syrup, some Italian cherries, and since I didn't have an orange, Clementine rind.

[00:05:02] All right, so let's bring this in here.

[00:05:04] I was going to try to make this a little bit bigger for you guys tonight because I know it can be hard to read.

[00:05:09] So the prepper files, this is where we go back on this day in history and we take a look at something that, if it happened during today, would probably scare us just a little bit.

[00:05:20] Here it is.

[00:05:20] On October 24th, Black Thursday.

[00:05:23] Anybody ever heard of Black Thursday?

[00:05:25] I'd heard of it but didn't realize that it had happened on this day in October.

[00:05:30] Selling intensifies.

[00:05:31] It was leading up to the Great Depression, the collapse of the economy.

[00:05:36] But on October 24th, Black Thursday, the market lost 11% of its value at the opening bell on heavy trading.

[00:05:43] The huge volume meant that the report of prices on the ticker tape in brokerage offices around the nation was hours late.

[00:05:50] And so investors had no idea that most stocks, what most stocks were trading for.

[00:05:54] So this basically led into the massive stock market crash that ended the roaring 20s and brought in the dirty 30s.

[00:06:02] The Dust Bowl, the Great Depression.

[00:06:05] The only thing that possibly brought North America out of the Great Depression would have been the Second World War, unfortunately.

[00:06:13] At least that's kind of how it looks going back.

[00:06:16] But so on this day in history, October 24th, what year was it?

[00:06:21] Excuse me.

[00:06:21] So 1929 was Black Thursday, the largest drop on Wall Street at the time.

[00:06:28] It may still be the largest drop by percentage of volume overall.

[00:06:34] Also, on this day, back in 1992, 32 years ago, the Toronto Blue Jays were the first non-American team to win the World Series.

[00:06:45] I had to throw that in there for my fellow Canucks.

[00:06:47] But yeah, so Black Thursday, folks.

[00:06:49] There it is.

[00:07:20] Ups recently again.

[00:07:21] But today, I came across a rather...

[00:07:24] Well, no, it was a couple days ago at this point.

[00:07:26] A rather interesting article.

[00:07:27] And this is, once again, Costco.

[00:07:30] I know you guys are going to say, I'm getting tired of your Costco articles, Tim.

[00:07:32] But they just keep dipping their toes into precious metals.

[00:07:37] And this will be the first time that we discuss a non-gold or silver precious metal in dropping the dime.

[00:07:44] And here we go, guys.

[00:07:45] This comes from CNBC.com.

[00:07:47] So take it for what you will.

[00:07:49] You can now buy a $1,089 platinum bar from Costco.

[00:07:54] Here's what to know before investing.

[00:07:56] Now, here's the deal.

[00:07:58] I am not...

[00:08:02] I'm not a platinum fan.

[00:08:03] I've never been a platinum fan.

[00:08:05] And it doesn't mean that others won't be.

[00:08:08] But there are definitely precious metals connoisseurs out there who do like it.

[00:08:13] So if you're into something a little bit different.

[00:08:16] And I don't mean, you know, that kinky kind of stuff.

[00:08:18] I mean, precious metals.

[00:08:20] Here we are.

[00:08:21] And it's a Pamp Swiss bar.

[00:08:22] Again, shoppers love Costco for the affordable gas.

[00:08:26] And the $1.50 hot dog and a soda.

[00:08:28] Same price in Canada as it is in the U.S.

[00:08:30] Recently, though, they found something new to love.

[00:08:32] Precious metals.

[00:08:33] And we've talked about this.

[00:08:34] Silver, gold, and now platinum.

[00:08:37] Costco began selling physical gold last year.

[00:08:40] And demand has been so hot that Wells Fargo analysts expect sales to now be in the neighborhood of $100 million to $200 million a month.

[00:08:48] That's insane.

[00:08:49] And earlier this month, the big box store began selling platinum on its website.

[00:08:54] A one-ounce bar will run you $1,089.

[00:08:56] Costco's move into metals has made it easier for everyday shoppers to own physical gold and platinum.

[00:09:02] But it's far from the first time precious metals have been in vogue, especially among people looking to invest them.

[00:09:07] Investors tend to flock to gold in times of economic turbulence.

[00:09:10] Yes, we know that.

[00:09:14] But, I mean, as a prepper, as somebody who's into being prepared, precious metals always seems to be something or it should be something that we're into.

[00:09:24] Especially once you get to the point where you have got your finances in order, then this is definitely something to look at.

[00:09:30] Now, again, I love silver.

[00:09:33] I love gold.

[00:09:33] Not as big a fan of platinum as some folks are.

[00:09:36] But if anybody out there is into platinum, let me know.

[00:09:40] I just don't.

[00:09:41] My biggest, well, two things.

[00:09:43] I mean, I look at holding my wealth.

[00:09:45] But secondly, I look at the ability to sell it in a bad situation.

[00:09:55] I don't want to necessarily say a grid down or a shit hits the fan scenario.

[00:09:59] But I want to be able to offload it if need be.

[00:10:03] And if I go up to some stranger and say, hey, I got a one ounce bar of platinum.

[00:10:06] You want to buy it?

[00:10:07] I just don't think that has the same curb appeal, the same resale ability to complete strangers as, say, silver or gold might.

[00:10:17] Not saying that they'll buy that either.

[00:10:19] But, yeah.

[00:10:21] So there you go.

[00:10:21] Platinum, Costco, seems like a match made in heaven.

[00:12:27] And it's really where I get to look at some of the oddest stories that I have found recently while perusing the news.

[00:12:35] I've got a bunch of different sources that I use.

[00:12:37] Google News, of course, is one of them.

[00:12:39] I have a bunch of saved searches on there for things like prepping and post-apocalyptic and solar and disasters and all of that kind of stuff.

[00:12:48] But there's also a really good Reddit subreddit called Prepper Intel that I really enjoy.

[00:12:54] It's a great place to find it.

[00:12:56] So this is some of the places that I find some of the best news stories.

[00:13:00] Here's the first one.

[00:13:01] If you guys haven't heard about this, I don't know how I missed it at first.

[00:13:05] But it's an ongoing issue.

[00:13:08] And we're talking about Cuba, folks.

[00:13:10] Cuba suffers second power outage in 24 hours, realizing years of warnings.

[00:13:15] So the first line of this article says,

[00:13:18] Fidel Castro once called Cuba's power plants prehistoric.

[00:13:21] Now, I believe Castro has been gone a solid 10 years at this point.

[00:13:25] So if they were prehistoric when he was alive and still cognizant enough to speak, what in the hell are they now?

[00:13:31] But I'll tell you, they're on the verge of a grid collapse over there.

[00:13:36] They said it was only supposed to be out a couple of days.

[00:13:38] They've tried to turn it back on multiple times.

[00:13:41] Now, I didn't check up tonight, but I know two or three different times they've tried to turn it back on with mixed results.

[00:13:47] Let's put it that way.

[00:13:49] And here we go.

[00:13:51] The country still relies on those prehistoric power plants, contributing to the longest blackout since the collapse of its former patron, the Soviet Union.

[00:14:02] Can anybody notice any correlation between Cuba and USSR?

[00:14:09] Just going to leave it out there.

[00:14:12] They're definitely responsible for some of the largest things that have ever happened in the history of humanity.

[00:14:18] The experts have warned for years, Cuba's power grid was on the verge of collapse, relying on plants nearly half a century old and importing fuel the cash-strapped communist government could barely afford.

[00:14:29] Man, so that's like trying to impress friends you don't like with money you don't have.

[00:14:34] Except in this case, they're trying to keep power plants online that have long since passed their expiration date and fuel them with fuel they can't even afford, folks.

[00:14:44] What in the hell is going on there?

[00:14:45] I don't get it.

[00:14:46] Friday morning, their dire predictions come true as the entire island of Cuba plunged into the most prolonged blackout it has suffered in 30 years.

[00:14:54] Since its former benefactor and steady fuel supplier, the Soviet Union, collapsed.

[00:14:59] Cuban energy officials managed to briefly get the power back up to some parts of the island on Friday night.

[00:15:04] But early Saturday, the state's utility company reported another total disconnection to the system.

[00:15:09] This second one lasted 24 hours.

[00:15:13] So, that is not good.

[00:15:15] I mean, this, when you first, when I first started hearing about the electrical grid in India and how it was all, it basically looked like a scab of wires.

[00:15:24] It was an absolute mess.

[00:15:25] They managed to hold it together for a while until they didn't.

[00:15:28] And now, I mean, they're doing okay there right now.

[00:15:31] South Africa, horribly outdated, horribly underpowered utility system falling to pieces.

[00:15:38] And now, the only communist nation in the Western Hemisphere is once again suffering from a form of collapse.

[00:15:45] And in this instance, the lack of power.

[00:15:47] Not going to be good, folks.

[00:15:49] Government officials, here we go, party line.

[00:15:52] Government officials tried to reassure the public that power would be broadly restored over the weekend.

[00:15:57] But acknowledged that they could not be sure.

[00:16:01] I know.

[00:16:02] One Step Closer says, how could communism fail?

[00:16:06] TikTok says it's perfect.

[00:16:07] I remember being a high school student and talking about this with a bunch of folks.

[00:16:13] And a lot of people said, communism is the most perfect system, except when it becomes practically implemented in the real world.

[00:16:20] And I don't even necessarily view it as, I mean, hey, there are anarcho-communists out there, which to me seems like a bit of a misnomer.

[00:16:28] But as long as you are 100% voluntary in whatever you're doing, I really don't see that any different than as a commune.

[00:16:36] But as far as a forced onto you political worldview, no, there's no way I want to live under that.

[00:16:47] L2 Survive says, Cuba, USSR, South Africa, all places that don't use freedom units.

[00:16:53] Hmm.

[00:16:54] Isn't that the truth?

[00:17:56] In uncertain times, the prepper supply business is booming.

[00:17:59] If anybody's been to a prepper event in the last couple of years, you will know that political uncertainty sells when it comes to preparedness.

[00:18:10] And whether that's a good or bad thing, it's the reality of it.

[00:18:14] I remember hearing many years ago that when Obama came into office that he sold more guns than anyone else.

[00:18:23] You look back to the Y2K scare and how that pushed a ton of people into the prepper supply business.

[00:18:31] So here we go.

[00:18:33] First paragraph.

[00:18:35] Ahead of the election, prepper meal kits have become a hit with both sides of the aisle.

[00:18:40] Emergency food supply kits, like the one seen in a now viral video, are selling at most major retailers.

[00:18:46] Like, here we go, guys.

[00:18:48] Costco, Walmart, Home Depot, and Amazon.

[00:18:51] In the past month alone, Amazon sold upwards of 3,000 of a kit deemed an Amazon bestseller.

[00:18:57] Anyway, the best few weeks and months, it's been like a tsunami, said Anton Edwards, the founder of an emergency preparedness organization called International Preparedness Network, which he started in 1989.

[00:19:11] That would be a cool dude to interview right there.

[00:19:14] Around one-third of American adults are now spending money on prepping.

[00:19:17] Can you imagine that, guys?

[00:19:18] Guys, go back for five years, ten years.

[00:19:23] Could you imagine one-third of Western society spending money on being prepared?

[00:19:30] That blows me out of the water.

[00:19:32] Most folks, for the longest time, couldn't spend $5 to put extra gas in the tank, let alone to spend some money to be prepared.

[00:19:41] Uncertainty, guys?

[00:19:42] It is what it is.

[00:19:45] Whether it's thinking about a natural disaster all the way up to something global, a war, a civil war, people are trying to prepare for whatever they feel like might be some doomsday scenario.

[00:19:54] The survey found that collectively, preppers spent $11 billion within a 12-month period.

[00:20:03] Yeah, I'm guilty.

[00:20:05] I definitely spend money on that.

[00:20:06] But here's the deal.

[00:20:08] One-third of all American adults have spent money on prepping.

[00:20:13] That tells you a few things.

[00:20:15] It tells you folks are scared.

[00:20:16] It tells you folks have some disposable income that they've managed to be able to find.

[00:20:22] And it shows you that there's a hunger for folks to get into preparedness.

[00:20:27] So if you're looking at starting a business, if you're looking at starting a YouTube channel or a content creation in the preparedness sphere, this is probably the time to do it.

[00:20:39] Now, not to take advantage of folks' fears.

[00:20:41] Anybody who does that, I think, is pretty slimy.

[00:20:45] So here, Chris Dixon, let's talk about this for a minute.

[00:20:47] Should preparedness be big business?

[00:20:50] Well, one of my mantras throughout basically my entire time as a, I guess, a content creator and an entrepreneur is this.

[00:21:01] You can help people and you can make money.

[00:21:04] They don't have to be mutually exclusive.

[00:21:06] So many folks look at somebody starting a business to help folks.

[00:21:11] And if you're making $1 off it, you must be a deadbeat.

[00:21:15] So here's the deal.

[00:21:17] Should it be big business?

[00:21:18] I think it should just be a business all the time.

[00:21:21] I would hope that folks are getting into it for the right reasons.

[00:21:25] The problem is, is that most folks don't.

[00:21:28] Most folks spend a shit ton of money they don't have right before Y2K and then return whatever they can afterwards.

[00:21:35] Have buyer's remorse, just like the people who don't have the money to buy a generator right before a hurricane.

[00:21:41] Use it for a week and then return it.

[00:21:43] I don't want people to do this out of fear.

[00:21:46] Simple as that.

[00:21:48] However, lots of people are going to come to it through fear.

[00:21:52] Somebody's going to come from Alex Jones or Joe Rogan or whatever it happens to be.

[00:21:57] They're going to be scared shitless and I don't know where to start.

[00:22:00] Glenn Beck's another one who used to be really good at that.

[00:22:02] I'm sure he still is.

[00:22:04] They don't know where to go.

[00:22:05] They've heard that the sky is falling.

[00:22:08] That everybody out there is out to get them.

[00:22:11] That Trump's a horrible person or that Kamala's a horrible...

[00:22:13] Who cares?

[00:22:14] Whatever it happens to be.

[00:22:15] They're scared about something and they want to...

[00:22:19] They're like, here, take my money.

[00:22:21] Make me feel better.

[00:22:22] But it doesn't have to be that way.

[00:22:24] I think part of our job as being preppers, as being in this kind of worldview is to talk people down off the ledge.

[00:22:32] Is to say, listen, you don't need...

[00:22:34] I mean, you don't need to go and buy the $10,000 mil spec after dark, you know, that kind of thing.

[00:22:43] You just...

[00:22:43] You don't need to spend that kind of money on anything.

[00:22:46] What you need to do is get your finances in order.

[00:22:49] Get your health in order.

[00:22:50] Look out for losing a job, like Haas said.

[00:22:52] Look out for the important things.

[00:22:54] Now, this is the thing.

[00:22:56] When folks come into preparedness at this time, when things are scary, it's our job to say they don't have to be scary.

[00:23:03] Let's start with baby steps.

[00:23:05] Don't throw the baby out of the bathwater.

[00:23:07] Don't spend all your money on something.

[00:23:09] Take a breath.

[00:23:10] Take another breath.

[00:23:12] And then where can we start with you?

[00:23:14] Simple as that.

[00:23:15] Now, can you start a business with that?

[00:23:18] Sure you can.

[00:23:20] Again, don't take advantage of folks.

[00:23:21] Don't prey on their fear.

[00:23:23] Help them out while you're along.

[00:23:25] But you can make money and help people.

[00:23:28] Because some of the greatest business...

[00:23:29] Well, almost all the businesses in the world started because somebody wanted to make some money.

[00:23:34] So if you want to be motivated, financial gain is a great motivator for business.

[00:23:39] But don't let it be the only motivator for your business.

[00:23:45] All right.

[00:23:45] Let's go back to the delinquents in the gully here.

[00:23:49] Red Flyer Media says, I think prepping expenditures is exploding right now after seeing what happened with the last two hurricanes.

[00:23:58] I agree.

[00:23:59] So let's just go down the rabbit hole for a minute.

[00:24:02] We've had two massive hurricanes that have made landfall in the eastern United States.

[00:24:07] We have the incredible political uncertainty that comes every four years in November for some reason.

[00:24:14] I don't know what happens every four years in November.

[00:24:17] You've got those.

[00:27:51] So yeah, I've been fairly lucky all my life.

[00:27:55] Never had any real bad foodborne illnesses until this summer when I had the nasty boat of food poisoning from the clams.

[00:28:03] But overall, I like to live a little bit on the wild side.

[00:28:08] So chances are it's still good.

[00:28:10] Food poisoning bacteria does not grow in the freezer.

[00:28:13] So no matter how long a food is frozen, it is safe to eat.

[00:28:16] Now, guys, this stuff comes from USDA.

[00:28:18] This is interesting.

[00:28:19] Safety.

[00:28:20] Foods that have been in the freezer for months may be dry, may not taste good, but they'll be safe to eat.

[00:28:25] So if you find a package of ground beef that's been in the freezer for more than a few months, don't throw it out.

[00:28:30] Use it to make chili or tacos.

[00:28:32] The seasoning and additional ingredients can make up for loss of flavor.

[00:29:06] Things that us preppers have been saying for years, but I came across this from last summer.

[00:29:14] This is an article from 2013.

[00:29:16] Maybe they don't like to talk about it as much anymore.

[00:32:24] All you've got to do is open a jar of tomato sauce or spaghetti sauce and cook up some pasta.

[00:32:31] But what if you don't have pasta sauce?

[00:32:33] You need to learn how to make your own, and that's what we're going to learn how to do now.

[00:32:57] Making sure that your pantry is stocked with spices and herbs.

[00:33:02] So we've got onion, basil, parsley, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, oregano.

[00:33:09] And I've got one can of tomato sauce from the store.

[00:33:13] And I've got one can of sauce that Tom and I juiced and canned up last week.

[00:33:19] And, of course, we've got our spaghetti.

[00:33:21] So we're going to make our own spaghetti sauce that you can do.

[00:33:25] And I'm also going to teach you a trick on how, because if I don't know, you've seen some

[00:33:29] of my other videos that I just kind of throw a handful there and a handful there, you know,

[00:33:33] here and there to measure things.

[00:33:36] Well, I'm going to show you how you can learn how to do that on your own.

[00:33:39] All right.

[00:33:39] As you can tell, I've already got meat in it.

[00:33:42] We do meat.

[00:33:43] This is just some ground pork we have on a pig we had processed last year.

[00:33:49] And here's the store-bought tomato sauce and our home tomato sauce.

[00:33:59] I have a minute.

[00:34:00] I'm looking forward to seeing how that tastes.

[00:34:03] Let's learn how to measure with our hands.

[00:34:09] What we're going to do, let's see.

[00:34:10] I know I'm probably going to, let's do Italian seasoning.

[00:34:12] What we're going to do is we're going to take Italian seasoning.

[00:34:15] This is a tablespoon.

[00:34:16] Let's see what that looks like in your hand.

[00:34:23] That's what it looks like in your hand.

[00:34:26] That's a tablespoon.

[00:34:28] Okay.

[00:34:30] Let's say you want a teaspoon of something.

[00:34:32] Let's do onion powder.

[00:34:42] So here's a teaspoon of onion powder.

[00:34:45] And that's all that is right there.

[00:34:48] Okay.

[00:34:49] So once you learn how a teaspoon or a tablespoon looks in your hand,

[00:34:55] you can start dumping things and not have to worry about it.

[00:34:58] We do use a lot of Italian seasoning.

[00:35:03] So we're going to do, this is some oregano.

[00:35:07] And yeah, I know that oregano and some of this other stuff is already Italian seasoning,

[00:35:10] but sometimes we like to do a little bit of extra stuff.

[00:35:13] Now this is parsley.

[00:35:15] And I have been, I've read somewhere that parsley, you don't want to put it up.

[00:35:18] We put it in there immediately because it could turn bitter.

[00:35:22] I don't know if I got a bad taster or what the deal is.

[00:35:25] I don't have trouble with bitterness.

[00:35:30] Looks like I'm bad at a basil.

[00:35:32] It's a good thing I got a backup in my pantry.

[00:35:34] So we got the basil there.

[00:35:35] Now we do a lot.

[00:35:41] And I usually do either fresh garlic or I do the canned stuff where you can just scoop it out.

[00:35:44] But that's not what we're doing today.

[00:35:46] We're doing, we're doing from the pantry.

[00:35:51] So that's everything we've got here.

[00:35:54] I know the tomato sauce needs some salt too.

[00:35:59] And again, yes, they just, once you, once you learn what you need to do

[00:36:05] or what something looks like in your hand, then you can keep going with that.

[00:36:09] So we're going to let this simmer.

[00:36:11] I'm going to stir it real good.

[00:36:12] I'm going to let it simmer.

[00:36:14] The longer you let tomato sauce and stuff simmer, it does cook down and get a little bit thicker.

[00:36:20] But it also gives the herbs time to interact with each other and just tastes really good.

[00:36:27] So while this is simmering away, we can start doing our water.

[00:36:31] Now, some people, some people like my son prefers to have, they, they simmer for hours until it's almost a thick paste.

[00:36:40] I don't do it that long.

[00:36:41] Maybe it's because I don't, I don't know.

[00:36:42] This looks like a pretty darn good consistency.

[00:36:45] I think it's going to be pretty good.

[00:36:47] Got a little bit of crazy hair going.

[00:36:48] But so we're going to let this simmer.

[00:36:50] I'm going to taste test it after it gets all warmed up and nice and see if I need a little bit more of anything.

[00:36:55] That's what you should always do too, is once you learn how to cook, we're just throwing stuff in there.

[00:37:00] You also want to taste it, make sure you haven't done something really stupid.

[00:37:03] So let's let that simmer for a while and we'll start our water boiling for the spaghetti noodles.

[00:37:08] Isn't that beautiful and tasty?

[00:37:12] I know you think it's spaghetti still, but I just showed you how to make your own spaghetti sauce.

[00:45:09] Now, some folks discover the idea of community and they think, huh, I've never heard another prepper talk about community in my life.

[00:45:26] Have a plan with your neighbors.

[00:45:28] Use skills in the diversification of labor.

[00:45:32] Too many people spend time worrying about what weapons are best and how they might lone wolf the apocalypse.

[00:45:38] Is it just me or do we all say that everybody talks about being the lone wolf but we really don't know many people who are lone wolves or even want to be?

[00:45:47] Maybe it's just one of those things that we all talk about.

[00:45:50] You should be more concerned about building a working relationship with those around you to bring their expertise to bear as well.

[00:50:23] Number one, for me to have some accountability so that I don't just sit on my ass and rest on my laurels and do sweet dick all.

[00:50:31] But it's also hopefully to maybe inspire you guys to try some things that make you a little bit uncomfortable.

[00:50:37] Because, you know, I do that all, well, quite often.

[00:50:40] I hate to be too uncomfortable, but I certainly like to learn new things.

[00:50:44] All right, here we go.

[00:50:45] This week in the workshop.

[00:50:46] Well, just before Becky got home, I finished putting away the rest of the summer stuff.

[00:50:51] Or almost the rest because I was out in the yard the other day and discovered some of her fancy wall hangings are still on the outside of the fence.

[00:50:58] So they got to be put away.

[00:51:00] So this is your warning that if you live in an area where it gets cold enough to freeze your face.

[00:51:05] And if you don't pick up a dog toy by the end of November, there's a good chance it's going to be frozen to the ground.

[00:51:11] You're going to trip over it for the rest of winter.

[00:51:12] Or worse than that, you're going to suck it in, throw it out between your snowblower.

[00:51:15] And then you're going to have like discombobulated dog parts everywhere.

[00:51:18] I mean like stuffed dog parts.

[00:51:21] So put your items away for winter if you haven't done it yet.

[00:51:23] Top up your hot tub or your pool if that's what you do.

[00:51:27] But we have a hot tub out back that we love to use in the wintertime.

[00:51:30] I just topped it up because it was down almost a solid foot.

[00:51:32] But my son and his friends have been in there quite a bit lately.

[00:51:36] And so it needed to be topped up and the chemicals needed to be balanced.

[00:51:39] So, you know, that's something simple.

[00:51:42] And some people might say not needed.

[00:51:45] I get it.

[00:51:45] It's a source of stored water.

[00:51:48] It's a source of relaxation.

[00:51:50] And it definitely helps with the sore body at times.

[00:51:54] But I like to keep some extra chemicals on hand.

[00:51:57] We have a good stash of chemicals.

[00:52:00] The place we get them from has a sale once a year.

[00:52:03] So we buy them when they come on sale.

[00:52:04] We stock them up and we have lots left over.

[00:52:07] Took Charlotte.

[00:52:08] Man, it has been a week for sports in the family.

[00:52:12] Friday and Saturday was a volleyball tournament.

[00:52:15] Last night was three games in town here.

[00:52:18] And then Saturday is a volleyball tournament as well.

[00:52:21] But then there's only one more tournament.

[00:52:23] And the first part of volleyball season is over for Charlotte.

[00:52:27] I'm going to miss the school league that she's in.

[00:52:30] But soon after that, club picks up.

[00:52:32] So there you go.

[00:52:33] Anyway, I picked up a new taper, which I don't think I've even posted online yet.

[00:52:38] I fell in love with this one that I bought at Home Depot.

[00:52:40] And if you don't know what it is, it holds a roll of painter's tape and a roll of painter's paper.

[00:52:45] And when you pull it out, it perfectly, and you can see that with air quotes, attaches both.

[00:52:51] And you're able to tape off your baseboards really well.

[00:52:54] Then you put a cloth drop cloth on top of the whole thing.

[00:52:57] And it's 100 times faster and easier for preparing.

[00:53:00] The problem is, is the one I got wasn't manufactured super well.

[00:53:04] It works, but it would get off kilter and the tape would come off the paper and different things.

[00:53:09] So again, I've said it before, buy yourself a tool, buy a cheap tool if you want to test it out.

[00:53:15] If you discover you're going to use it on a long-term basis, then buy yourself something nice.

[00:53:19] So that's what I did.

[00:53:20] Clark, I bought myself something really nice.

[00:53:22] And you'll probably see a review on it or at least some video on Instagram down the road.

[00:53:26] I cut up my firewood.

[00:53:28] Not that I need any firewood at all, but I've had some four to five foot lengths of, you know,

[00:53:34] thick tree branches and that sort of thing over the last couple of years,

[00:53:37] just piled up in a pile.

[00:53:38] It was time to get that put into firewood shape and size for the garage.

[00:53:43] Cause I do have a wood burning stove in there, a backup to a backup to a backup, right?

[00:53:47] I took Becky to the city for a doctor's appointment.

[00:53:49] Nothing out of the ordinary, just one of those things that needed to be done.

[00:53:54] Just keep your head on swivel when you're there.

[00:53:56] Don't spend too much money at Costco, that kind of stuff.

[00:53:59] Actually, speaking of head on a swivel, I was up in Lloydminster today working at the daycare.

[00:54:05] I went to Home Depot to get some supplies.

[00:54:07] I came back through and I don't know, there's lots of names I could probably call the dude,

[00:54:14] but he was probably homeless and more than likely on some sort of medicinal type things.

[00:54:21] And he stepped right out in front of my vehicle.

[00:54:23] I didn't have to, you know, slam it down, but he definitely would have been hit if I wasn't careful.

[00:54:27] And then he proceeded to walk across all three lanes traffic.

[00:54:30] And this is a major highway that goes through the city.

[00:54:32] It does stop for a few red lights, but the dude stepped in front of somebody.

[00:54:37] They laid on the horn and he just lost his ever loving mind at him.

[00:54:41] I watched him over kind of over my shoulder through the rear view mirror,

[00:54:44] just making sure things didn't get too carried away.

[00:54:46] But I honestly, it was every bit as scary as, well, not scary,

[00:54:50] but it was every bit as hot and hostile as when Brian Offgrid Ping and I saw the guy hop out of his vehicle

[00:54:58] when we were in Savannah last spring.

[00:55:02] And it got pretty heated, guys.

[00:55:04] This was, yeah, I thought there was going to be a fight anyhow.

[00:55:06] So just always keep your head on a swivel.

[00:55:10] Picked up some battery lights at Costco and a tiny, a small Leatherman that I'm testing out.

[00:55:15] It's quite a bit smaller for a pocket size, but the lights are screw in light bulbs.

[00:55:21] If you haven't seen these before, they fit any standard medium base fixture.

[00:55:24] They have a battery backup built into them.

[00:55:26] So if the power goes off, they click back on.

[00:55:29] I don't even think you notice.

[00:55:30] I'm going to do some testing.

[00:56:49] And I'm glad I did it because now I know what it'll work for and what it won't.

[00:56:55] I got saved last minute by a fellow landlord, folks.

[00:56:59] We thought we had somebody lined up to move into our mobile home.

[00:57:03] And it had been somebody had been in there for a year and a half, finally moved out, took great care of it.

[00:57:07] But it was something that I completely renovated about two years ago.

[00:57:11] We had a guy lined up.

[00:57:12] He was about to move to town in about two days.

[00:57:15] He was just getting ready to send me the money.

[00:57:16] And I get a message from their landlord.

[00:57:19] They happened to see just somehow Facebook, in its infinite wisdom, posted my post from here and showed it to a lady in Saskatoon.

[00:57:29] So about two and a half, three hours away.

[00:57:31] She saw it and she immediately called my daughter.

[00:57:33] Her phone number must have been listed on the ad and said, hey, I need to let you know that they left my house in an absolute state of disrepair.

[00:57:45] And I thought, oh, my goodness.

[00:57:47] And she said, not just a little bit.

[00:57:48] She said, the estimates I have right now are around $20,000.

[00:57:52] And I had reason to believe this lady because she didn't know me from Adam.

[00:57:56] And she just wanted to help out a fellow landlord.

[00:58:00] And so I messaged Buddy and I just said, hey, just letting you know,

[00:58:02] we're going to rent to somebody else.

[00:58:04] Have a nice day.

[00:58:05] No more discussions required.

[00:58:06] And I got a couple of follow ups, which I just left alone.

[00:58:09] But who dodged a bullet there, folks.

[00:58:12] I'd rather leave it empty for a year than to rent to somebody like that.

[00:58:16] Also, here's a surprise or not a surprise, but something that some of you might not have known.

[00:58:28] So we are going to go down.

[00:58:29] I think we're going to spend about five days in Tennessee.

[00:59:22] So I was heading home this evening and coming from Lloydminster.

[00:59:26] So George wants to know what part of the country I'm in.

[00:59:28] I'm about an hour south of Lloydminster, Alberta.

[00:59:32] Right on the Alberta, Saskatchewan border.

[00:59:34] I'm a Canuck.

[00:59:35] Sorry about that.

[00:59:36] See, I had to apologize for being Canadian.

[00:59:39] And I always watch when I'm coming south.

[00:59:42] There's a place where you're about a mile from the train tracks.

[00:59:46] You're up on a hill and you can see down to the train tracks.

[00:59:48] But there's a sign that gives you plenty of warning.

[00:59:50] And if it's blinking, I can hang a right and bypass the train.

[00:59:55] You know, there's no difference in distance.

[00:59:57] It's just a little bit more twisty and turny.

[01:00:00] But it allows me to not have to wait for the train.

[01:00:02] So that tends to be what I normally do.

[01:00:04] But tonight I was coming down.

[01:00:06] I see the lights flashing.

[01:00:07] There's a train parked across the highway, which number one, that's very rare.

[01:00:11] I've never seen a train stopped on that section of the highway.

[01:00:14] There's no place for, you know, bypassing another train.

[01:00:18] There's no place there for loading or offloading.

[01:00:20] And it kind of threw me for a loop.

[01:00:23] And I thought, well, he stopped there for a reason.

[01:00:26] I'm going to hang a right and bypass it.

[01:00:28] So as soon as I turn right, I look down to the tracks.

[01:00:31] And there's a train coming in the, well, sorry, no, back up.

[01:00:34] There's a train that was heading in the opposite direction that is also parked on the tracks.

[01:00:40] And there's no bypass there.

[01:00:41] So you're less than probably about a quarter mile between the two trains.

[01:00:45] And they would have come to a stop facing each other.

[01:00:48] That is not supposed to happen.

[01:00:50] So I'm like, well, I'm going to bypass it.

[01:00:52] I don't know what happened.

[01:00:52] So I'm heading along.

[01:00:53] And after maybe five or six more miles, I come to yet another train that has stopped on the tracks heading that direction.

[01:01:00] So whatever happened there, there was a mishap with the signaling, the GPS.

[01:01:05] I don't know.

[01:01:06] It could have been really bad.

[01:01:08] And I'm glad it wasn't.

[01:01:09] But it definitely backed up the trains for a while.

[01:01:12] That is the busiest set of tracks in my area.

[01:01:14] It's the TransCanada tracks.

[01:01:16] It's also a double-decker track line.

[01:01:18] If you haven't seen it before, they stack storage containers or C-cans too high on those train tracks.

[01:01:24] And they fly.

[01:01:26] I've clocked some of those trains at over 90 kilometers an hour, which is, what, over 50 miles per hour?

[01:01:31] So things could have went really hairy really quick.

[01:01:38] Now, I need to apologize because the tracks that come through my town is one.

[01:01:42] And the tracks that go through about a half hour north of me is the other.

[01:01:46] And I can't remember which one it was.

[01:01:47] But I do know that the Via Rail train, which is the only passenger train in Canada, goes through there.

[01:01:53] And it goes through Wainwright a little bit further west.

[01:01:55] So anyway, it appears that what happened wasn't serious.

[01:03:02] And have to get rid of an intruder, if you know what I mean.

[01:03:06] But man, I would not want to have to deal with it if the family was there as well.

[01:09:48] Water vapor from the air condenses on the coils and drips into a tank.

[01:09:52] The condensed water is pure because when the water originally evaporated into the air,

[01:09:56] it left its impurities and minerals behind.

[01:09:59] So providing your coils are clean, you could collect the dripping water and drink it.

[01:10:04] But if the water sits around in the tank, it can provide a hospitable medium for growth of bacteria and molds,

[01:10:10] making it unfit for drinking.

[01:10:11] So regular cleaning of the tank minimizes this problem.

[01:10:15] Simple as that.

[01:10:15] So can you drink it?

[01:11:10] If it got completely depleted of charge, I'm not really sure, to be honest.

[01:11:16] But I went to bring it out the other day and use it.

[01:11:20] It's the first time I've used it since last winter.

[01:11:22] One battery was perfectly fine, and one was showing red, and it wouldn't charge.

[01:11:28] I left it on the charger overnight and nothing.

[01:11:30] So I flipped it over to the other side, and it appeared to take a charge.

[01:11:33] Finally, it took a full charge.

[01:11:35] I put it on my blower, and there is something wrong with that battery.

[01:11:41] I can't quite figure out what I should do with it.

[01:11:45] It wants to run.

[01:11:46] It pulls some juice out of it, and then it stops.

[01:11:48] So I may have to do a video on doing a warranty claim from Ego.

[01:11:54] But yes, their batteries are immensely, immensely expensive.

[01:12:05] And one of the biggest things is the fact that there's no actual wearing in a tool.

[01:12:13] So with old motors, and I'm not perfect at this kind of thing to explain it.

[01:12:20] But most of the traditional motors had, what, magnetic brushes that were made out of,

[01:12:25] I want to say a carbon.

[01:12:33] So number one, going with the brushless tool means that there's one less wear point,

[01:18:34] So like my tri-fuel Furman generator has a THD that's a total harmonic distortion of above or beyond 10%.

[01:18:43] And if you don't know, pure sine wave power looks just like a perfect sine wave.

[01:18:49] And if you took physics back in the day, you'll know what that is.

[01:18:52] But it's just a perfectly round sine wave.

[01:18:54] Now, traditional open frame, non-inverter style generators tend to be fairly clean power when there's no load on them.

[01:19:03] But the more load, the more jagged, and the more out of sync the waveform becomes.

[01:19:08] So that's why you'd go with an inverter generator because it will give you a full sine wave even under a full load.

[01:19:16] So this person wants to know, will it clean it up by running it through my breaker panel?

[01:19:19] No, not at all.

[01:19:21] You're not going to improve it one bit because it's the same as household power.

[01:19:25] If there's something wrong with the power coming into the home from the power lines, your system at the house is not going to clean it up.

[01:19:32] So you have to have clean power going into it.

[01:19:34] Now, there is a workaround for smaller things.

[01:19:38] You could take the power from a generator and then you could charge a battery, like a 12-volt battery or a solar generator.

[01:19:48] And then you could use that if the solar generator gives out pure sine wave power.

[01:19:52] Or you could use an inverter, a pure sine wave inverter, to pull that power out.

[01:19:56] That's a way to convert it.

[01:19:58] There you go.

[01:20:29] There are adapters similar to the ones you've used that hold two or three AA batteries and others that use AAA batteries to adapt C to C size batteries.
