Hope everybody can hear me okay tonight and everything is going good audio is going to be a little weird because tonight we are coming at you live from the backwoods of beautiful North Carolina. I actually managed to get an Internet connection off the power of Earth Station satellite and hopefully we're good to go and they will find me for the duration it's to show anyway, So if the audio messes up, it's because I'm out in the woods. Hey, if you're listening to us on blog talk radio and you know you just got the little notification that says a new show showed up, or you're listening to us on some kind of other streaming service, we invite you to switch over to prepperbroadcasting dot com and actually join our chat room. So when you go to prepperbroadcasting dot com, the show's gonna load, the players should automatically load. You'll be hearing my voice again, and you got actually join in the chat room. We have a real time chat every night that we're live, and there are a lot of great people that jump in there, a lot of good information to get shared back and forth, really really awesome people. Also, don't forget that if you're driving down the road and you can't connect to the internet for some reason or you know, for whatever reason you can't get online, you can always listen to the show by calling in. The number is three four seven two zero two zero two to eight. Hey, it's an added bonus. If you press number one, you get dropped into a queue, and that means you can talk to me to live on the air, ask questions and never ask me either. One quick housekeeping PIP. I have a lot of infro to cover, and I encourage you to download or listen to the show again afterwards to make sure you catch everything. So I'm gonna kind of go fast. There's a lot of material to cover. If I say something and you miss it, I absolutely encourage people to go download the podcast afterwards or listen to it, you know, two or three times next week, just to make sure you got all the information. So you know, it's not like your life depends on it or anything. You know, it's not like your life and help are going to depend on water filtration whatnot. So anyway, all right, let's get started. So we all know the rule of threes, right, you know, there's three minutes with down air, three hours without war, or a way to get warm, three days without water by ya da YadA all right, and we all know that water is an absolute necessity for an SHTF scenario, even in a minor scenario. Do you need to make sure that you've got a way to make clean water after your water storage is depleted or lost life and death of First, we all know the one gallon per person perst date motto. If you don't, then it's one gallon per person per day or one second. And so I'm sure everybody listening has got at least five hundred gallons of water, it's treated in storage, and it's ready to go for doom today. But if you don't, and you don't have any water stored and you don't know what to do, then f why you need to have a way to filter the water you need? We all know that we need a way to filter water before we drink, and everybody should be carrying a water filter or some kind of water purifier and your bug out bag or your EBC bag, you know, But which one do we get the water filter? Do we get the water purifier? You know? If you go to your local sporting goods store, walk into you know, any kind of sporting goods or outdoor store like ri I or by that and you're going to see a myriad of water filters. There's survival, spring, Vereo, Catadine, Alexa Pure, spherey pin MSR, saw your live straw, breadth up pure and burkeep or British birk filled for those that were correcting for y twok back at the nineties because the British, So which one do we choose? Well? Do we choose a mechanical filter? Do we use bleach? Do we use iodine fills? Do we reverse on reverse osmosis osmosis? You know? Do we use distillation? Do we choose a water filter that simply still physically strains out the protozoic system bacteria, but it misses all the viruses? Do we choose a water purifier that combats the viruses but it's a little bit more expensive than bulky? What is the difference between the point one point two point zero one microns? And the biggest question that I know y'all y'all are asking is which one is better for camping, backpacking or bugging out? And is there one that does everything? You know? Is there one water filter that gives us the bang for our butt? Well, you're in luck, because I'm gonna do that. So let's get started with pre filtering. Before you do any kind of water treatment. You need to remove as much sediment and turbidity from the water as possible. Turbidity meaning mud, dirt, and the general cloudiness of water. So if you're stirring up the silt or cloudy or it's kind of looks milky whatever, that's called turbidity. And the best way that I have found to get rid of that is having a dedicated prefilter on my water filter, or using a coffee filter or a clean cotton cloth. So if you're wearing a cotton T shirt, you can use the cotton T shirt as a prefilter. If you've got a coffee filter, use that one and a lot of times your water filter that you're using, especially if it's a mechanical one I pump, they don't have a prefilter already on it. But anyway, the idea is to get as much of the large materials out of the water is possible. We're talking one two micron any greater. You're not talking about rocks and stuff, be when we're talking about you know, little little things of mud to make the water cloudy. So it is absolutely required to prefilter any cloudy water before actually filtering, And the reason why is it reduces the maintenance and it prolongs the life and the flow rate of the actual water filter. So your water filter, you know, has to has to filter stuff through little, really really small pores in order to clean the water. And the way you prolong the life of those and the way you keep the flow rates up is you actually use the prefilter. If you're gonna be using a UV purifier like a steapin where you put the little thing in the water and press the button and it uses UV light, you absolutely have to have a prefilter because if the water is not clear, the full effect of the UV is not going to be recognized. And in other words, if the water is a little cloudy, the UV ain't gonna work. For instance, all right, sore filtered our water. The next bext thing, Yes, the bandana would work. Bandana is a cotton cloth. A bandana would absolutely work. Even a let me see if I can pronounce this wrong with the smeg smegma, smegama smiga somethingmember what it is? It's the y'all know what I'm talking about? Yeah, that I think mentioned it earlier, eks telling me that that Nud mentioned it is that that you know, the thing that the terrorists were not the turbine, but the one that put over their face smeg er smeg or something like that. Anyway, it's a cotton cloth, but yes, the bandana would do the same thing. After you pre have you pre filter it, the next best thing to do is either boiling it or distilling the water. So boiling is kind of be the kind of one of the choice. The boiling kills all the bad organisms, but it leaves the minerals and the metals in the water, which is can be a good and bad thing, and I'll get to that minute. Distilling the water, however, strips every saying out this is gonna strip out all It's gonna kill all the organisms, which is great. But distilling is also going to remove all of the salts, all of the metals, all of the minerals, everything. And the problem is that most experts no longer recommend drinking distilled water on a one term basis. If you talk to Glen Meter, you'll disagree because he and his family had been drinking to stelled water for a very long time and they don't have any ill effects or he doesn't say he's ever had ill effects. But the fact of the matter is is that distilled water is stripped of minerals and it is considered hypotonic. What hypotonic means is that the water will chemically pull minerals and metals out of the container that you put it in in order to balance itself. If you put it in metal, then the water is going to try to pull minerals and other metals out of the metal container in order to balance itself. If you put it in your body, then the water is going to be pulling beneficial minerals and metals out of the lighting of your stomach, out of your blood stream, and out of the lymphatic system. And then in return, your blood and your lymphatic system are going to begin scavenging for minerals from the parts of the body like your bones and your organs. And if this process repeats itself, you know a bunch of times on a long term basis, long term meaning you know, several several months or years, then you're going to be more prone to degenative diseases like ostiophorosis and whatnot. So if you decide to distill the water, be sure to replace the minerals that are in it before you commit to drinking it for a long time. M I agree. And the chatter and says that distilling can concentrate volatiles. Yes it can. So if if there is something that if there's a chemical in the water that boils before two hundred and twelve degrees, then you're absolutely going to get that and you're distilled water. You know, alcohol boils at one seventy. That's how the whole distillation process for alcohol works, is that alcohol buils off one seventy and water boils at two twelve. If you've got methanol or some other kind of like mercury salts or something that are the boiling punch of them, and I don't know this, I'm just talking example, if the boiling form in one of them is two hundred and ten degrees and you're going to get those in your distilled water before you get the actual pure water. So both of them are great. Both of them have their risks. Be able to make sure you understand boiling and distilling before you commit to it. Right next in line somewhere else to still water. Yeah, that NUB says, if you can get your minerals somewhere else. Distilled water can be okay. And you know, if you've got if you could throw in like a pinch of baconto a pinch of salt and maybe take a multibemin or something like that, you know you'll be okay. But anyway, just know that when you distilled water, the water becomes hypotonic. Hypotonic water wants to rebalance itself by stripping minerals from wherever it can. So it's kind of the same process. I don't know if you'll know a the zinc and ode, like in your water heater, the zinc degrades before I actually degrade the water heater, kind of the Saint Cross. All right. Chemical treatments are up next. So the most common method that everybody knows is using sodium type of fluoride aka florox bleach. Common bleach that we find on the shelves is five point three five percent fluorine and it is added at a rate of two drops per quart. Here's the problem though. Bleach will destroy most but not all, disease politic organisms. And the other great thing is bleach has a shelf life. Believe it or not, Chlorox will degrade over time, and in a grid down situation, that's not something you really want to chant were trying to describe. I'm talking. I love to talking. I managed to pull a quote from a Florox company representative, and so in the preper community, the Florox Company made a recommendation. They said, quote, we recommend storing our bleach at room temperatures. It can be stored for about we begin to degrade at a rate of twenty percent each year, which will totally degraded into salt and water. Storing at temperatures higher than seventy degrees will cause the bleach to lose its effectiveness, degrade more raperty blah blah blah. Basically say, if you require six percent sodium hyperchlorite, which is what you need to bleach water, then you should change your supply every three months. So, in a nutshell, bleach is fined. Leach is a good way to do it, but bleach is not an end all, be all solution. This bleach will expire, and if you buy a bottle of bleach and a year later it hits the fan, and then you try to use that bottle on the bottomshelf to purify water. It ain't gonna work all right. Another one that has recently gained a lot of attention is count tim type of fluorite. This is also called pool shot, so it's pool shot can be white granular form, a one pound bag of granular form. We'll treat up to ten thousand gallons of drinking water. I have not used these, but I have read that caltium humper fluorite is one of the best chemical disinfected because it destroys a variety of bacteria, yeast, fungus, spores, viruses, everything. To descend to disinfect water using caltium hyper chlorite, there's actually a three set process. I'm going to go through this real quick. So to make a fluorine solution using heltim hyperchlorite, here's what you do. This first one is you're making your first one is you're making the bleach and you don't want to drink this, but you want to dissolve one heaping teaspoon, which is about one quarter of an ounce high test, which is like seventy eight percent of granular calptum hyper chlorite into two gallons of water, so a solution. You then want to add this bleat solution add one to one hundred parts to the water to be treated. So you've got your the water that you got out of the river, and let's say it's one hundred parts whatever. You want to add only one part of your flooring solution to that, and then you want to let the mixture sit for half hour. So in a nutshell, one decent teaspoon of pool shot dissolved into two gallons of water. This makes your leach. Then put one part of your blint solution into one hundred parts of water doing the mask curried the two. That's roughly one ounce of blint solution to three point one quarts of water that you plan on drinking. So you need to be sure that you you mean fool shot, because hey, I did not know that. So Gray in the chat room it's saying ek was violently waving at me in my Gray in the chatroom says, fool shot can be difficult to store. It vaporizes and eats away most containers. I did not know that because in my research, everything that I was looking at it was basically saying, hey, fool shocks the way to go, because it's indefinitely you can store it. But apparently in my gray knows better. This is why of the chatrooms off. There's people in here that know more about this than I do. I mean, I I just stayed at the holiday that express last night. That's the only reason I could do this kind of stuff. I haven't no idea what to do, So good job in in my grade something we did not know. So if you're going to store counting hyperchlorite, you need to make sure you store it correctly and know that it's probably going to eat away most containers and it can vaporize, all right. So next up is iodine. Iodine is actually light sentiment and it must always be stored in a dark bottle. In my grace is just keep an eye on it. So yeah, check your stuff rotated off. Iodone has to be stored in a dark bottle. Now, iodine works best if the water is over sixty eight degrees fahrenheit, and it's really shown to be more effective and inactivating your rd end of fluorine. So for iodine, we're talking on two percent liquid solution and this one, what you're gonna do is you're gonna add five drops of iodine for for the clear prefiltered water that's that you're using the liquid iodine. Another option that you can do is the portable auquant. I know, all, I've all seen these little iodine tablets that you drop in. The best way to use these is follow the manufacturer's instructures. The manufacturer's got the volumes and whatnot on the bottle. If you're gonna use the portable lock with iodine tablets, just read the book and figure from there. One thing though, that I have done these and if you've ever used the portable lockwooll you know that sometimes you can live with funky taste in the water as a little life hacked. If you add some vitamin C, it lacks to neutralize the taste of an emergency. You know, that's really great at adding the orange flavor the vitamin of t thing. And it also happens to be in the immune system things is the physic blood. A word of faution, boom. Be aware that some people are allergic to iodine. So persons with fire word problems, those taking lithium salts, women over fifty pregnant women, y'all should all consult your doctor before using iodine. Also, a lot of people that are allergic to shellfish are allergic to iodine. Is you're allergic shellfish, then you probably have an iodone allergy. So y'all remember the iodine allergy. You remember that I show eating bumps. Okay, last treatment for treatment, I got that. I'm going to cut touch on the scoring doc side before I get into that. So I have a question for for y'all. So the E K J Fergie and am I grate? I have a question about the ion thing. So if I have iodine tablet and we all know that you know in a nuclear problem that they say you know you take the tastium iodide because it fills the thyroid up with iodine. And there's the the ki for you, the potassium iodye, the firo safe, all that kind of stuff, BioStat whatever. Would drinking water purified with iodine still would your body still take that iodine up? So if you if you doesol iodine tablet the affordable aqua in water, or if you're using liquid iodine pollution, would that help you and a nuclear problem because your thyroid is going to be absorbing that kind of iodine. So I'll let y'all turn on that. Y'all can tuk some up your shelves as the chatter anyway. So while they're thinking on that one about iodine and purified water helping chlorine dixide and this is also known as aquamura. So chlorine oxide is significantly stronger than iodine. It does not disclood the water, and it does not give the water an unpleasant taste. Plus aquamura has a four year shelf life in the manufacturing date and and in my opinion, this is the product to use for long term treated storage water. So I don't have any experience with the little out bottles to treat parts of tints. They actually aquamura bass, a little one ounce treatment that you put in drops of A and drop the B in I can tea, and you know that that's supposed to cure fout of the water. I've never done that. I've only used the two out treatment and I use that for my fifty fat gallant storage barrels. So those of you that are unfamiliar, there's a part A and a part B bottle, so there's two different chemicals and they have to be combined together and react before you add it to your drinking water. So it is really really important that you read the instructions if you're going to be using Aquaamera, because when part A and part B are mixed, they actually produce a poisonous gas. Aamer flying. I guess you're asking me how it spelled aquamora. Uh, I think that tip. I think a q u A m I r A. Pretty sure that tip aquaamera a q u A m I r A. That's the brand name of it, and it actually is exploring doc type. But Tom in my gray I answered my question earlier, am I Grace says, and you know what I have heard Nurse Amy say this before I have, actually I've read this in the Doom and Bloom book. I remember this. Nurse Amy said this that if you don't have the iodine fills, or you don't have thyrosafe, you can take was it betadine or just plain on I betadine solution and you paint it on your skin. And em I Gray is saying, paint it on one square inch of your skin, or dip the first knuckle of your little finger into the iodine and do this daily. And that's I've actually heard that. But if you take if you take an iodine solution and you put it on your skin, you know a little bit every day, your body will absorb enough iodine from that to fill up your thyroids. So there you go. I guess that's the way to do it. Anyway, back to the flooring dot side, So as I was saying, when you mix part A and part B, they produce a poisonous gas. This poisonous gas is actually fatal. So when you're mixing the two chemicals, whatever container you mix it in, it's going to turn it yellow. And if you're doing it in a flowed space, you're going to have a fun night. What I do is. I actually take a plastic solo cup and I mix the part A and I mix the part B in. I do it for the required time and that after it's reacted, then I pour it into a barrel that I've already filled with water. So I take a barrel, I fill it up with with the pre filtered filtered water or tap water, and then I pour in my aqua mirror wants to react. I use. I wear disposable gloves, I have high production eye protection, and I make sure that I have sauce fan running or that I do it outside vent the junes. But you know, if you do it correctly and do it according to the label, it's completely safe that if you mistreat it, it will kill absolutely So it's good stuff when you mix it. When you mix it properly, the water that you treat it can have like a flight of florine smell, and it's good for minion years. All of my storage tank I treated the aquamor So enough of the chemicals. Let's move to some mechanical stuff. Aqulimer has floring ox side tablet. I did not move it. I've only ever used in liquidment. Else in the chat room is saying that Aquaimer has a floring dock side tablet treating a large storage. Is that for like dropping in a canteen or like a port of water? Is that Do they have the akimere tablets like the aquapure iodine or is that like you drop like six tablets in a gallon or a tank or something like that. That's the question for you out there else. All right, mechanical and gravity filters. There are a few definitions and some science that we need to cover first. So there when we talk about water filters, water pure, portrayed and stuff, Elk says, one tablet for one leader of water. So all right, if you're using the aqua mirror tablet, then you have one tablet for one leader of water. Awesome, All okay, that, uh, you're technically not going to die. I've got a snoop full of the fumes and it burns like hat that it's not going to kill you. I have to say it because that's the warning on the label, and you know, I have to be to the responsible person and give you the worst case scenario. Scared of the pee out of you. That's reality check. You know, in reality it's not going to kill you unless you you know, if you abuse it, then yeah, it's going to die. You're going to die. But h it's really not that bad. It's if you're doing long term storage water, and you're treating long term storage water, then I recommend not for pure. You just really need to follow the label. And it's yeah, there's words of cautions. It's really big stuff. But anyway, you know, it's no different than the kids eating tide pods. I mean, it's kind of a thing thing anyway. Water filters treatments. Let's see classification. First classification is a water filter, so everybody says water filters well. To meet this standard, a water treatment device must remove at least ninety nine point nine percent of pathogenic bacteria. This is known in the water industry as a LOG for reduction, So to be able to be called a water filter, it has to have at least a LOG for reduction of pathogenic bacteria. The second classic classification is called a water purifier, and to meet this standard, a device must remove at least ninety nine point nine nine nine a pathogenic bacteria. That's LOG six. It must also reduce viruses by at least ninety nine point which is long five. So in other words, which it is just kept the number of nine and the higher of the batter. So long six is exponentially better than log five. Long five is a thousand times better than log four. So a water filter has to remove long four pathogenic bacteria, a water purifier has to remove log six pasogen bacteria, and it has to reduce viruses by long five. I said we're gonna get scientific water filters work, because I said really really early. They have little pores or small holes. These work by physically straining out protozoan cysts, so you know U Hurdium, Giardia, the bacteria such as like you know Ecoli, Salmonella. Those things are a certain size, and the way the water filter works is the four size is smaller than the virus, but big enough to allow a water molecule. Fruit water purifiers do the same thing, but they also combat viruses. When we're talking about virus, we're talking about hepatitis A, rotavirus, aura virus. So you know, the next time you're on a funable cruise ship, you may want to take up on a purifiers. Just saying they have a that have a neural virus, probably everyone. I love Carnival. I stell Carnival all the time, every time I go on cruise. I'm not knocking the cutany at all. I'm just saying they got a aura virus problem. Anyway. You can't telling me to shut up. Let's see check with chat room. Saw your minister Boro filter every day too? Wow, I don't think I have those stats. So that nub past in the chat room. You saw your point zero two purifier purifies one million gallons of water, It moves that back, it removes ninety nine viruses ninety nine point nine nine nine. Well, basically log six to bacteria. Excuse me, log what is that? That's log seven of bacteria and log six of prison insists you can do basically a million gallons ten people the sea gallons a day. Basically that water filter will last you fifty thousand days for one hundred and thirty seven years. In my Grace says, it takes everything out but the wetness. Yeah. One thing I did read I didn't. I didn't have this in my show notes is that salt water. These things don't work on salt water. So you cannot filter ocean water through a sawer water filter and have it come out you actually have to just steal sea water in order to get rid of salt. So I did read that, I think either on Burkie or on a sawyer that they don't filter actual seawater park So long story short, you want a water purifier. If often Now we're mentioned in the microon ratings, and I was mentioning the lob stuff and you know one zero one is what not so micron, believe it or not. There are two different ratings for the size of micron, and it depends on what system the manufacturer uses, So there's two ratings. There is nominal absolute, An absolute micron rating is one that states the maximum four side expected within an element. The nominal micron rating is an average of the four sizes within the element. What this means is that at ninety percent of the fours or point zero two micron and ten percent are two micron, then that manufacturer claimed the nominal micron rating is point two, but in reality they have two micron, which is one hundred times bigger two my front force that would absolutely allow bacteria and parasite stuff pass through. So the nominal microon rating is very misleading because it's an average force, not the absolute size. So when you look at water filters and stuff, you want to make sure that you use the absolute ron rating, or you want to make sure that the water the manufacturer uses absolute. The US standard is uh, we'll see this is an absolute The US standard is ninety nine point nine percent absolute removal. The international standard is ninety nine point ninety nine percent absolutely. So uh, when you look at it, restate that when you look at a water filter and you want to make sure that the manufacturer uses the international absolute micron rating because that gives you absolutely the maximum for side. So if the international absolute rating is point zero two micron, that's really goodile that filtures out pretty much everything. Let's see as an exam. So if you're talking protozoa, falk in giarda, and cryptospridium, they are usually five microns and sighs are larger. Anything that's like zero point one micron one micron or lower is going to filter that out. Bacteria. We're talking colerat me COOLi and salmonella. The general size of those things is point two too point five microns, So anything below point two and that out the viruses. Again, we're talking cafe rotavirus and auuravirus. Those things are pointing zeros zero four microns. They're really really small. So your filter has got to have a very very small micron time and then another cab it is sometimes the microns don't matter. Sometimes that the material in your filter is made of it helps bringing it to that checking these chat room. Yes, you do have to back plush sawyers. You've got to. If you've got a sawyer or a life trial, you have to backwash it every once in a while. Uh, well, the lifetraw you gonna backlash every time strange sawyers freeze. Stood, you cannot let the sawyers freeze. I did not know that. So that nub of the chat room is saying, and I'm gonna I'm gonna guess this is gonna be a soon for any chatter use any chat room. Any water filter that if it's got water in it and it freezes, it's probably not gonna do well. And that's probably as to be right, because water freezing is its fans. And I bet you would destroy the membrane in filter if it freezes. Very important point that if you've got a wet water filter in your MOUG got bag. You need to make sure that it's close to your back your body keeps. That is an awesome point that NU kudos to you, all right. Quick rundown of the pros and cons of hand pumps, gravity filters, u V, squeeze, and straw. So when I say a hand pump, we're talking K divine or MSR. Gravity filters, we're talking to SAWR meaning u V. I'm talking to stey pin squeeze filters that can either be the sawyer or I think the AREO does it. And then straw filters, I'm talking about life straw. So quick converty pump filters. With these, you drop an intake pose into your source water and then you drop an outlet hoose into your water bottle. Do you then work the pump? Some of the models thread directly onto a bottle or a reservoir. Pump mechanisms differ flow rates respect all that clean exte FROs plea the amount of water you need. Water can be pulled from seats and shallow water sources. The internal element for carkage is respect replaceable, and unfortunately, on hand pumps you do have to replacement cartages. Some of the times the pump filters are pumping can be a chore, especially at the end of the element's life span. I talked about blow rate. Filled cleaning of the element is required, and the weight and the bault are a little bit greater than other treatment methods. All right, gravity filters, but this one. What you do is you're gonna fill a reservoir. You're gonna find a suitable place to hang the reservoir. It's gonna go down through the filter and it's going to pour water into your where you're gonna be drinking it out of. So if you imagine five gallon bucket up on a table water filter, five gallon bucket down when brown, that's the kind of things about most models tongued with kind of a pair of reservoirs. Like if you're talking the staller, they've got a little squeeze bag. They've also got straws, but can be anything. Some of the pros with gravity is, of course gravity does work for you. You can process a large quantity of water for big groups. So it's kind of a set of to forget it, and on some of them, not all of them, the element or cartridge is replaced. One of the drawbacks is that it's slow, so treating the gravity filter is a lot slower than with a hand punk and keeps and shallows. That means like small creeks can make it be challenging to field the reservoir and filled. The cleaning of the element is required. As Jaffreedy mentioned to, you have to blow back on the sawyers and on a while to keep it clean. U so that not been the chat room where we jump ship you real quick that none in the chat room says from sawyer. So from the the sawyer. While we have no proof that freezing will farm of the filter, we do not have enough proof to say that it will not harm Therefore we must say that if you suspect the filter hasn't been frozen, replaced it. This is especially true with a hard freeze that is from the sawyer. They can't prove that it won't hurt it, but they can't prove that it you know that it is going to hurt it. So they have to err on the side of caution, as I would too, because again, it's not like your life depends on your filter be it's works, So error on the side of caution and make sure your water breaks all right. Next up is the UV light, so we're talking steary pins. These are like little fen style ones. I know you have seen these. You push a button, the UV light comes on and you stir the thing around. You give it a few seconds and supposedly it kills everything. Thinks about a minute to go through those is strength. It's really easy. You turn the thing on, you stir it, you give it a minute or so, and then the water drink. Another pro is there is no element to be cleaned. There's nothing to be replaced. The cause boat is it needs batteries and it may be dead in the water if an E n P or a CNEH. So to pick there. As I mentioned earlier, you do have to prefilter because if the water is silk to your cloudy, it's going to pair the effective. And then sometimes if you're processing large bodies of water, you have to treat several times. It's only gonna do like sixteen ounces of the pop. It's not gonna treat five and ten gallons really easy. Right. Next up all bottle filters. So what these are. These are like a filling simps, So you fill up a bottle and then it's like a straw. See you like drinking coat like to go to the suption that you provide goes to a valve. Some of them work like a coffee press. Some of them can use you the light. But anyway, the pros are for bottle filter is the treatment is easy, the water is quickly drinkable, the element or cartridge is replaceable, and on average they're kind of lighter, and they cost less than for practice filters. However, water quantity is limited by the bottle side, so if you don't have that bigger bottle, you can't process that much water, and still cleaning of the element is required. Next up on the squeeze filters. So this is kind of a very broad category of similar bottle filters, except that you're feelings again a small reservoir and then squeezing the water through the alement rather than sucking it. Some of the pros are again, the waters treatment is easy, water quickly drinkable, cartridge is replaceable. Some of them double as a gravity filter or sharp sauce filter. That means the like the and then you know they cost less than come from the gravity filters. Some of the costs the squeeze filters are and the one of the quantity is limited by the reservoir needs to the bottle and field cleaning event is required. So I've seen that. M I brain the chat room says, anyone ever seen the hydro packed permergence. It is a one liter pack. If you drop in dirty water, the package is an osmosism in brain in clean water contains electrolytic salts like heteroid, and drink it like a juice pack. One time use. That's pretty cool. That asked me a question. What if you live near the equator purifying your water clean bottle late at the time, Yes, cover this, but you can do that. You can google that. But you you can take water and put it in a you can take clean clear water. It has to be clear water, so you go pearfy it. You can put it in a blast bottle or a really clean clear plastic bottle and put it in the sun for a few hours and it will be eavy light. We will kill it. That nub posted Lincoln the chat rooms, so for those of you that are in the chat room, you can check that out. If you're not the chat room and listening to us on the podcast later. It is Modern Survival blog dot com, Forward Slash spelt forward slash how to purify water with sunlight. So if you want to just google how to purify water with sunlight, that's probably gets your m I grade. Post the emergency water package shy hti water dot com, so if you're looking for the hydropack, it's from HTI water up Time links to the chat room, but again adds it to some podcast there you go live too far north. Yeah, let's see week up through squeeze filters the bottom of strap straw style filters. These are like sawyer and the life straw, so these provide water on demand. These cylinders have a built an element that lets you slurt water drip. It is literally like a straw that you stick in the water and stuck out. The pros are that the treatment is very easy and the water is quite drinking quickly drinking. The water is lighter to tost less than gravity down down tide. The water is only available when you're at the water source, so when you're at the river you can get your field. He says, e K are you okay? You've been so quiet? Okay, I seen y'all heard in k laughing. So she is there, She's still alive. So the comes with the straw filter meaning life straw, is that it's only available when you're at the water source. So, as I was saying, if you're at the river, you can get your field for what you walk away from the river, then you're out of water. Generally, this is considered a one person treatment option, so you're not going to share the straw with other people. You know, maybe your spouse or friend, but not certainly the stranger. Clean the element. It means you have to blow back on the life straw every time you use it. Some of them have replaceable elements, but not everything. So alright, man, here is what y'all have all the waiting. Here is the water filter. Des Let me grab a sip of water real quick, my fruit Again, I'm in the backwoods. I don't have the reality check studios to bring me water and do all kinds of good stuff. Some kind of roughden thing that that says the hydration pouchs will fill in about ten hours. All right. First up is the saw your many saw Your many Ways two ounces. It retails for around twenty five dollars and it provides zero point one micron absolute filtration. It removes ninety nine point percent of all bacteria and it removes ninety nine point CRUs That is log sticks for both. That's really really good. Some of the packages for the sawyer include a drinking pouch so it can be used as the squeeze. Some of them include the straws you can use it as a straw. Some of them have tube which you can do and connect the hydration packs. Some of them have arts and stuff that fit onto standards, disposable water bottles and soda bottles, so you can hook the saw your Mini up to the two liter bottle and use the two liter bottle as your source and then squeeze or suck the water proven into your mouth as a squeeze for straw, ye squeeze for strawil. The Mini is rated up to one hundred thousand gallons. The cool thing is that the Mini can be used to get it up in a min ago we squeeze filter, a straw filter ante gravity filter. Occasionally, not every time, but occasionally the Mini has to be factor watched to be able to bring out the free screen. That's not each time. All right, Second up, we have the Life straw. This one also weighs two outs. It retails for about twenty dollars. It provides up to point two micron filtration, meaning it removes ninety nine point nine percent bacteria that blog six and nine nine point nine percent, soa that's only log three, So really good for bacteria, not so much for pros of good. It does its job. You're not going to get sick, but you know, it is what it is. So the thing about the live straw, now there's there's kind of a big, kind of a big draw back here right breathe through the chat here I was. I thought I read on the lifestrawal that you do backwash it, that you like, get a mouthful of water and blow back through it or something I don't know. On their website they say that you can backlash it. So the negative thing about the lifestrial, and I'm not knocking it. I got a very good friend of mine that has life straws in his egency bags. But the entire process is powered by such. It is very much similar to using your conventional drinking straw. And it only filters up to two hundred and sixty four gallons of water before it into flight. So the parcords last two hundred and sixty four it ain't much. The standard live straw standard run of the middle is ineffected at filtering viruses, chemicals, salt water, and heavy metal. As I said, it needs to be cleaned, or I guess, try to be cleaned by pushing the water back through it. The straw takes a while to get going. So when you find a river and you stick the straw down the river, it's going to take a minute or to be able to get the straw working. So what you need to do, here's the best way to do it is take a bottle or take the straw and fully immerse it in the river or in your water source and let it soak for a minute. So ek is showing me all Live Straw's websites. It's how do I clean my life straw is according to LifeStraw dot com. After every use, back flush your life straw by blowing a breath of air into the mouth piece to purge all mating water trapped filter. If you have access to clean water, stuck some water into the filter and back flush it again. Even if you shaped leave both in uncapped to air dry at room temperature. That's really great until you're trying to bug out you're in an emergency. So there you go. You can't found that on the Lifestraw's website. So back to the sucking things as life Straw does up there, Really and truly the thing works. It works great, but you got to stick it down in a jar for a few minutes and let it basically pull up some water. Or you gotta stick it down to the river for a few minutes. Let things pull up some water. So they work really good and you can pull a lot of water out of it. Yes, there's water already in or if you know it's got a few few times ago, if it's really dry, then it takes about five strong sucks to get the you know, pull on it, give it about five good good swallows and then it should start fillering the water. Let's see. Third line is the Catadine hiker Pro. I know we've all heard of Catadine water filters. I was just looking at the Hiker Pro. This one weighs eleven out since it retails for eighty five dollars and it provides point two micron filtration. It is a hand pumped mobile tan pumped model, and approximately forty eight strokes per minute will provide around one liter clean water. So it comes with two hoses, one for input, one for output, and it needs to have a field maintenance kit because with the Catadine Pro piker Pro there is a separate field maintenance kit that you need to get that will prolong life to the partridge. All right, Another hand pump that y'all have heard of is MSR. In this case, I looked at the MSR Many Works ex Pureifier system one hundred dollars and it provides up to point two micron filtration end ninety nine point ninety ninety nine log six bacteria nine and nine point nine. In brazila lot three carpridge life is about two thousand liters. Yeah, if you're traveling some third third country, you might want to use use one of the so I guess if you are going to one of those kind of countries, you might want to try the MSR Guardian Purifier. This one weighs seventeen ounces, retails for three hundred and fifty dollars, provide up to point zero two micron four size filters. The uh log stick the bacteria log log three of bartozoa. But the carpridge life is over ten thousand hours. Alrighty, So those are the hand pump bottles. We're we're moving here real quickly in the in the home stretch. Uh So. The second last are the up purifiers. And so when I took the steerpins, I found three of them. There's the classic three, the Ultra, the Adventurer stereopin. These walk all the way about three ounces without the batteries. The retail for between seventy and one hundred dollars, and they will kill ninety nine point ninety nine percent percent of protozoo bacteria and virus, so along four of protozoel bacteria virus, that's pretty good. They use UVC type light water in about one minute and thirty two ounces of water in about ninety seconds. A set of batteries for the steerpins is going to last about eight thousand uses ay a quince to frost one hundred and fifty liters of water. But on the downside, they do require batteries, which, as I said earlier, if the d MP or seeing me hits u RCSSL fix nigga to that there jaffergy. The last one, this is the big and it is the big Burkey Turkey for British burkle Field. It is considered a water purifier as yeah, you always do that, you know, Jay ferguy is she is on the top of the game because she she uh, she's always jumping next on the subject. She always gets the next thing. Great minds think of light but an aga instead of people like to think. So she's what it is? Uh hard water effect water pureifiles. Yeah, I'm sure you would get cal build up, all right, So the Burkeys. The Berkeley is considered a water purifier as it removes more than ninety nine point nine to nine percent of bacterious viruses. It also removes ninety nine point eight percent of tri halo lefting expect It removes ninety nine point eight percent of inorganic materials like chlorine, most heavy metals like birthry Academy has lead, ninety nine point nine percent of pharmaceutical drugs, as well as the very large list the color testicide and multicle organic compounds. In other words, it really removes a lot of stuff. It removes all of the little organisms that make me sick, as well as chemicals and metals. Curtains is off and the water now ron rating on their website, I kind of found that it's generally agreed upon to be about two or fourth nine, depending how you read. But they use something and they use a proprietary filter called the black Berky purifications. These are ceramic elements. They are tested. They were actually tested to remove nine no no no no no nine, a whole bunch of nine, some things like log nine pathogenic bacteria. The organisms that are filtered out using the black Berkey are point zero two four. That means is black Berkey is really really good food filter. So to summarize everything, it's satisfied. Jay Ferdy. Bowling and distillation are the very best way to kill organisms, but they both have drawbacks. Saw Your Mini is rated at point one micon and removes logs ficked all bacteria for the zoa, not viruses. It is good for one hundred thousand meters I believe instead, and it can be used as a squeez still for straw fill for gravity. Life straw is rated at point two micron and removes log sticks to bacteria, but only long three protozoa, and it does not remove viruses. The life straw is good for up to two hundred and sixty four gallons. It can be hard to draw if it is not completely submerged for a few minutes. Had nine and in the sar are can pumps they do for two microns UV light removes log four protosaur and the black virtue removes pretty much everything down to two to four. So in my opinion, what I have and what I use are the saw, your many and my bug out, my EBC bag, what I carry and I'm hiking, I have a big berkey from my home and when I'm long term camping, and for the money and the affordability, I say, carry the saw your mini perior versus and experience cheap. But if you can invest in it to the burkey that is to night. I got the one minute morning. Don't forget to join us tomorrow night eight pm Eastern with Dave.
