[00:00:03] You're listening to PBN, Your Path Back to Stability
[00:00:33] Monday folks, what is going on? Why am I so small? Boom, there we go. Monday, big day. The fire drill for Go Forth and Forge. The fire drill for Whitney Johnson last week is over and the real thing is tonight. Monday night, okay, 9pm Eastern.
[00:00:53] Join us for all of you foragers out there in the audience, particularly those of you who are petrified at the idea of cutting that sulfur shelf loose, cutting those coral fungi loose, going and finding those morel mushrooms in the burned forests. We have the thing for you. I'm going to get into it in a minute, a little more.
[00:01:18] I just called today's show The Path Back to Stability or Your Path Back to Stability because, I don't know, it's not super dialed in, in all honesty. Do you have your disaster coffee? Hmm? I think, what am I drinking? Supply Drop today. Supply Drop.
[00:01:38] All right, I want to give you a real quick sort of all BS aside talk about comms and emergency comms, okay? It's taken me a long time to come to this. It's taken me a long time to admit to this. But I think it's important. If you don't wake up, and I've learned this from, you know, dealing with different kinds of people and also trying to be honest with myself.
[00:02:06] Like, if you don't wake up every day excited about frequencies and repeaters and different communications modalities, you need to streamline, you either need to streamline your comms game or you need to get somebody to handle it for you and follow their directions. The folks at commsdepot.com are an incredible resource for that.
[00:02:35] Right? Great American-owned company. Not only is it an American-owned company, but if you look, this is their website here, commsdepot.com. If you're listening to the audio podcast, just go check them out, commsdepot.com. They aren't just reselling Chinese manufactured comms equipment. All right, they're gathering up companies. Last week I had the Mad Gear hat on. Those guys, you know, basically started over there at Instagram with me.
[00:03:05] Well, I mean, I found them over there at Instagram, and they were selling T-shirts and hats. Now they got some of the most awesome mesh-tastic comms gear out there that I know of. Small businesses, American-run businesses doing communication stuff. You know what I mean? What I really want you to understand is if you're not into this thing, you're not going to be into this thing.
[00:03:30] I think it might be almost nearly impossible to will yourself into passion over communications and emergency communications. I'm just telling you, it's just one of those things. You've got guys who are into it, and you've got guys who are like, you know, I'll get there when I get there. You know what I mean? If not for Chin, if not for the people at the Prepper Broadcasting Network who are into emergency communications, I wouldn't have any radio stuff.
[00:03:59] I wouldn't know what to do with radios. But, you know, Garden Girl at Chat says we all need a Chin Gibson in our lives. That's the truth. I mean, that's a joke. It's a PBN sort of laugh line. But you do. If you're not Chin, if you're not the guy that wakes up, you know, to a bowl of frequencies, and to a bowl, you know what I mean? If you're not into it, I'm just trying to save you a lot of time and a lot of effort.
[00:04:27] You know, I'm trying to save you a lot of overthinking and maybe even spending money. Like, find the comms guy. Find the comms guy who tells you about the comms gear and gives you the sort of step-by-step or the easiest way to fix your problem. I'm like an idiot who will reinvent the wheel all the time. This is not a game for that. You know what I mean? The comms game is not a game where you want to be like, I'm just going to figure it all
[00:04:56] out from square one. Unless you love it. If you love it, it's a different thing. But if you think you're going to sit down and figure it all out from square one and it's going to be quick and easy and cheap. So, you know. That's the real talk on communications I have for you today. Check out commsdepot.com. They're great guys. They'll be with us over the months, probably years to come. And they're putting together resources for you right now that'll make, you know, setting
[00:05:24] simple things up like MeshTastic, off-grid text communications real easy. Okay? All that said. What the hell else are we doing today? What else are we doing today? I'll give you a peek at the book a little later. March 31st, the continuity returns. 10 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. If you know, you know. If you don't know, you will soon.
[00:05:55] It's been a long time. It's been probably a year, something like that, since we've done anything relating to the continuity here at PBN. This is a membership side event. And it's really come to, it's really come to, oh, thanks, J. Ferg. Yeah, that's the Prepare the Homeland logo in the background there. I just, I don't know. I realized that the constant motion of the back background was kind of getting to people. I don't know.
[00:06:24] It didn't really bother me at all. But, you know, I hear you. I hear your comments out there. I got a great email today, by the way. I'm not going to divulge from who. But I will tell you that they said, we missed the Changing Earth podcast and tell Dave Jones to quit teaching so he can come back and do more podcasts. Just so everybody knows where the, oh, the hatter is with us.
[00:06:53] Morning, PBN. Glad all is going well. How's the, how's the spring gardens going along, chat? How's the spring gardens coming along? I, uh, I was sabotaged by chickens early, but we survived it. We survived it. You want to hear a funny little tale? The chickens have been captive. Mostly captive. For their protection. My wife and I were talking. I was on the phone with my dad and my wife, and we were all in the kitchen.
[00:07:21] And I look out the window and there's a dog in the backyard. Except funny thing about that is there was no dog outside. All four dogs are in the house, but there's a look out there. And just as I'm looking out there, I realize it's not a dog. It's a fox, a big one. We have these big foxes around here. I don't know. But anyway, he takes off between the fence posts and out into the yard. And, uh, keeping the chickens. I mean, they don't seem to hate it too bad. They're not in love with it.
[00:07:52] But they'll live longer than all my other chickens, I'm sure. Because of it. You know what I mean? They'll be around much longer. And the other benefit that I didn't calculate. Yeah, I can't fire off 22s. Well, you know what? I probably could fire off a 22 where I live and it wouldn't be that much of an issue. I could tell all the, you know, people that would be worried what happened. Um, but anyway, the other thing that happens is, uh, your grass survives.
[00:08:22] And a lot of your garden survives. When they're out there, like, unfettered in your garden. I came out the other day, right? And I got pretty big, some pretty big pots. Maybe about, like, this size. Right? And I had planted kale in them and turnips and stuff like that. They're just sitting around with dirt and nothing planted in them. So I just threw whatever kind of spring stuff I had. I had a bunch of seeds out. And I planted out all these pots.
[00:08:52] And no lie that, like, the first day after, not after I put the seeds in, but the first day that the chickens were out since I had put the seeds in, I would look out the back door. They're sitting in the pots. Like, there's three different chickens in three different pots. They had dug out everything that I had done to create their little dust bath. And they were curled up in the pots. I should have got you a picture of that. That would have been a great photo. I was a little bit too angry.
[00:09:22] You know? Because if you've had chickens and you've had gardens combined, the way I've had over the years, you know that they'll throw a curveball, man. Jayfur's got some perennial flowering plants. Organic onion. Nice. Yeah, my walking onion is finished. It died off. It's gone. I have no more walking onion. So I'll have to get some more of those. I really like having those around.
[00:09:53] But we got a lot of spring stuff happening. Our peach trees, I think, are pretty much finished, which I'm happy about. I want to move on past that. But I definitely want to move on past that. The kale and so forth. When I say kale and so forth, what do I mean? What are the spring garden staples?
[00:10:21] For us, English pea, guarantee. Turnips, guarantee. Beets, guarantee. Spinach, guarantee. Kale, guarantee. That might be it. That might be like a radish. It's rare we start a year without those things. Not all of them always make it, but it's rare that we start a year without those. My kids, they love the radishes. My oldest in particular. So we got to have those. You know, the green peas are just so good to go out and eat. You got to have those.
[00:10:50] And the kale, I say that the kale is a spring, but really the kale is just everything, you know. Garden girls doing plums. I think we're going to put a new fig in. We finally got a fig to work with the help of my neighbor. Last year, I ate the first homegrown figs of my lifetime. And then I planted a fig, see if the sapling comes up. If the sapling doesn't come up, then we're going to do another fig. And we might just do a nice, like, orchard of fig up at the top of the street.
[00:11:20] And if people want to share, it's fine. The mint will come back. The gooseberry has returned. I'm going to get another gooseberry. I like it. We had a few of them. Some of them died off. But, you know, it's a cool little fruit if you've never tried it. There's a lot of benefits. It's watery. It's like a watery grape. So it's not, like, incredible. One of the cool things about the gooseberry shrub, though, is it's covered in long thorns. So there's utility there. You know what I mean?
[00:11:53] The horseradish came back in year two or three. I forget. I need more soil in my strawberries. Strawberries look like they're fine, but I need more soil. They're already re-roading. Like, there's erosion happening. And inside their little cinder block castle, they're starting to erode away. What I need to do is get a truck bed full of probably some good mushroom compost, something like that. That's what I need. Sorry.
[00:12:23] We have very important conversations that have to take place immediately as I click go live. I'm going to have to get, like, I go live at 9 a.m. tattooed on my head. I'll get it, like, on the side of my face so it looks cool. Like, I go live at 9 a.m. Stop throwing sticks in the spokes of my tires, please. It seems like a weird time.
[00:12:51] One thing I'm really contemplating is 6 a.m. Eastern. But see, if I do a 6 a.m. Eastern, then my Pacific time is dead. There's nobody watching live at 3 a.m. Pacific. There are nobody you want watching live. But it is what it is. Should we do a little SHTF, Chef? How much time we got? Yeah, we're doing good. It's a rainy day. It's a rainy writer's day anyway. I had this one planned for last week.
[00:13:21] We got into all kinds of important and pressing stuff. But let's do it. Let's do a little SHTF, Chef. You'll dig this. It's a good one. Now, there is a good chance that we still have some cornbread on sale. Do you need to see me?
[00:13:50] I like this little take-me-off altogether. So I've got something for you. It's corned beef hash over auto pen today. Okay? Corned beef hash over auto pen. Yet last week I spent... Hey, Firewolf Forge. Last week I spent the bulk of the time... At breakfast chewing up corned beef from the holiday. Right? It's one of these things that... I'm not going to give you a recipe recipe.
[00:14:21] But I will tell you all about sort of the process for making great corned beef hash. Because it's just one of my favorite things, man. The key, of course, is, you know, within the corned beef itself. Day old. There's probably still some on sale. If there ain't some on sale, I'd tell you. It's a brisket that is marinated, basically. You know what I mean?
[00:14:49] So the brisket that's marinated... The pickling... The corning spices or whatever it is. You can look them up anywhere. That charcuterie book I show you all the time. That's a good one. It's got a good recipe in it. But the corned beef has to be cooked completely. Chilled. The way you get the good crispy potatoes... Right? Because your hash is basically going to be diced corned beef, diced potatoes. Sauteed up. Made to be crisp.
[00:15:19] Cooked and chilled. Cooked and chilled. Right? Dice your potatoes. Boil them. Chilled them. All the water gets off. You don't have any splatter of oil. That kind of stuff. You can get a really good crispy... But some people even deep fry the potatoes in the hash. I'm not a big fan. I like to do it all in the same pan. You want to use a high heat oil. You know? One of those deadly seed oils that if you eat too much, you'll die. Like everything else in the world. Corn oil is what I used.
[00:15:49] You want a high heat frying oil. Peanut oil. Something like that. So that you can really get stuff crispy. Because that's what I think it's all about. I crack the egg right in the middle of it all. So I start by frying up the dice. Try to keep your dices the same size too, right? Corned beef and your potatoes should be about the same size. Pretty well diced. Pretty well cubed. Fry it all up until it's nice and crispy. Lower the heat. Crack eggs right on top.
[00:16:19] Just crack them right on top. Take a lid to your saute pan or some tin foil. Put it over. Cook the eggs until they're about, I don't know, a third, two thirds, something like that done. Maybe halfway done. And then take it off the heat and set it to the side for a few minutes. And the residual steam and heat will cook those eggs sort of sunny side up. Delicious. Delicious. Don't cook the yolk oil to death.
[00:16:47] Like the runny yolk mixes in with the corned beef hash. It's perfect, right? Fire Wolf Forge in chat says, Auto Pen sounds like EpiPen. If you haven't heard about the Auto Pen controversy, you got to look it up. It's so good. I don't want to get into it. It's too much to get into. But that's corned beef hash over Auto Pen. Okay?
[00:17:15] I just removed myself from the whole thing. There we go. All right, folks. Last but certainly not least. Let me make sure I got everything on my short list. Last but certainly not least. Let's get into the book. The book is out tomorrow. I finally figured out the release date of the book. It is great. I've been telling you about it a lot. Go Forth and Forge. Whitney Johnson. It is, if you want a field guide for mushrooms,
[00:17:45] this is the field guide for mushrooms. Okay? Trust me. I've been looking at field guides for a long time. Never really many field guide for mushrooms. I'm trying to find. There's a picture. There's a page of pictures that I think is just fantastic that sort of shows you what you need. See what I'm saying? Like this is what you need. It's between these types of photos, you know, high resolution, full color photos.
[00:18:14] If you're going to be like deciding, is this thing going to give me the worst stomach ache? Be potentially deadly. Send me to Pluto or it's going to be delicious on my table. And I'm going to feed it to my family. Then you need a book like this. You need a full color book. You need an understanding of the botany of the mushroom, right? Or the breakdown, the anatomy of the mushroom, that whole thing. This has it all. It's linked down in the description. It's already a bestseller, by the way.
[00:18:42] So she's doing great in terms of sales. Probably some of you picked it up because I know you guys. But you need this also. See, this is the key. It's the same thing like when you're foraging anyway. If you're foraging plants, you need to know the difference between the leaves, right? And the seed pods and the flowers and the stems and the roots. It's the same thing with the mushroom. If you look at a mushroom and see a mushroom
[00:19:12] and that's all, then it's really hard to sort of get down into the nitty gritty. So the link's down below. You can just search Go Forth and Forage and that's what we're going to talk about. Mushrooms. Tonight. Probably one of my favorite foods. I don't eat them enough anymore. They used to be my like driving force in life. It was like, what season is it? What season of mushrooms are there? I didn't go forage them. I just went, bought them because as a chef, I thought that's, how you got them. You buy them.
[00:19:41] But they turn up everywhere, man. They're in all kinds of places around me. I've lived in more than one place. Oh, Firewall Forge. I'll get you that list. Don't worry. I'll get you that incredible e-book. So tonight, 9 p.m. Eastern. Don't miss it. Another great interview. The interviews have been tremendous. I mean, really, like outstanding lately. Unbelievable people on the Prepper Broadcasting Network. on Mondays. Though we are due
[00:20:10] a PBN roundtable. We are due a roundtable. I got to gather the hosts so we can form Voltron and do a real sort of, maybe a Q&A preparedness roundtable would be pretty fun. L2 Survive jumps in. You guys are subscribed, right? Who's not subscribed to the L2 Survive YouTube channel? Raise your hand. Go subscribe. L2 Survive over at YouTube.
[00:20:40] Get the book, Go Forth and Forage. Join us tonight, 10 p.m. Eastern for a great interview. I'm sure we'll be talking as much recipe as we will be foraging because that's just the nature of my background with mushrooms. And, you know, it's one of those things. That's pretty slick, L2 Survive. I appreciate that. See, the key is to start a separate YouTube channel and subscribe to your own YouTube channel. We have... All right, folks. I got to get out of here.
[00:21:10] I think it's going to start to rain and I put my dogs outside so that they would not have like a Royal Rumble live on the air. Okay. I'll see you guys tomorrow, man. Yeah. Let's leave it at that. No. I'll see you guys tonight, 9 p.m. Eastern.
